Each morning Stevenson would take them out for a long     5    over the hills. They had been     6    this for several days before the weather suddenly took a turn for the worse.Kept indoors by the heavy rain, Lloyd felt the days     7  .To keep the boy happy, Robert asked the boy to do some     8    .

Rising above the names

I was shopping in the supermarket when I heard a young voice.

“Mom, come here! There’s this lady here my size!”

The mother rushed to her son; then she turned to me to apologize.

I smiled and told her, “It’s okay.” Then talked to the boy, “Hi, I’m Darry Kramer. How are you?”

He studied me from head to toe, and asked, “Are you a little mommy?”

“Yes, I have a son,” I answered.

“Why are you so little?” he asked.

“It’s the way I was born,” I said.“Some people are little. Some are tall.I’m just not going to grow any bigger.” After I answered his other questions, I shook the boy’s hand and left.

My life as a little person is filled with stories like that.I enjoy talking to children and explaining why I look different from their parents.

It takes only one glance to see my uniqueness.I stand three feet nine inches tall.I was born an achondroplasia dwarf (侏儒).Despite this, I did all the things other kids did when I was growing up.

I didn’t realize how short I was until I started school. Some kids picked on me, calling me names. Then I knew.I began to hate the first day of school each year.New students would always stare at me as I struggled to climb the school bus stairs.

But I learned to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life.I decided to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. What I lacked in height, I made up for in personality.

I’m 47 now, and the stares have not diminished as I’ve grown older.People are amazed when they see me driving.I try to keep a good attitude. When people are rude, I remind myself, “Look what else I have – a great family, nice friends.”

It’s the children’s questions that make my life special.I enjoy answering their questions. My hope is that I will encourage them to accept their peers (a person of the same age, class, position, etc.), whatever size and shape they come in, and treat them with respect.

When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the listMusic is nice, people seem to say, but not important.Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(优先).This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.

Music tells us who we are.Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from.Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions.Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.

Music provides a kind of perception (感知) that cannot be acquired any other way.Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive (情感的) meaning of the same phenomenon(现象).We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.

The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings “talk” to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosity, our hungers, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.

Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do.Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.
