Being the bead of high school for many years. I grew tired of budget meetings funding cuts, and many other administrative chores(杂务). I started to dream of retirement. Sinning in traffic on a weekday morning, I would find my mind wandering. I would imagine spending time with my grandhiken quiet evenings with my wife, traveling, or rediscovering some great books. I told myself that I wouldn’t sign myself up for any committees any classes, or anything requiring a schedule.

My first day of retirement came last I cooked a great breakfast for my wife and me leisurely read the paper, clamed a bit of the house, and wrote a few letters to friends. On the second day. I conked breakfast read the paper…On the third day…This is retirement? I med to tell myself that it was just the transition (过渡), that those golden moments were right round the comer and that I would enjoy them soon enough. But something was missing.

A farmer colleague asked a favor. A group of students was going to Jamaica to work with children in the pores neighborhoods. Would I interrupt my newfound “happiness” and return to the students just this once? One trip. That’s all. My hags were packed and by the door.

The trip was very inspiring. I was moved not only by the poverty I saw but also by the sense of responsibity of the young people on the trip. When I returned home. I offered to work one day a week with a local youth organization. The experience was so positive that I was soon volunteering nearly full-time, working with students schuss North America to assist them it their voluntary work.

Now, it seems the tables have turned. Some days I am the teacher, other days I am the student. These young people have reawakened my commitment(责任感)to social justice issues by challenging me to learn more about the situation in the world today, where people are still poor and suffer because to continue to participate in helping to find solutions. In return. I help them do their charitable projects overseas. I’ve gone from running one school to helping oversee the construeliem . Of school in twenty-one corutries!

It is well known that the Japanese people’s love of fish is almost as strong as a bee’s interest in honey. As fish populations were decreasing, fishing companies were forced to fish further and further away from the shore. Then they had a big challenge — how to keep the fish fresh for longer. So they decided to keep the fish stored in freezers on the boats. But the public did not like frozen fish. So again the fishing companies had a new bigger challenge. What they decided to do was to have fish tanks on their boats. After catching fishes, they would put them in the tanks and keep them living there until they got back to shore. It’s time to get the first of at least two flu shots recommended for many Americans this fall. Vaccine against regular winter flu is ready.

Despite all the headlines about the new swine flu doctors do expect some garden-variety flu to hit this fall, too. And health authorities on Thursday asked people to go ahead and get that first shot out of the way before the lines start forming for swine flu vaccine next month.

“We must not let our guard down against seasonal flu”, said Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University.

More than 110 million doses (剂量)of vaccine against regular winter flu are expected this year, according to a new estimate from the Centers for Disease and Prevention. That’s not quite as much as last fall’s record supply. But typically fewer than 100 million Americans get flu vaccine, even though it’s recommended for the majority of the population, including adults 50 and older, all children ages 6 months to 18 years pregnant (孕)women, people of any with health problems like heart disease or a weakened immune system health workers, caregivers of the high-risk including babies younger than 6 months.

Now comes the confusing part.

In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord(房东) can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest(投资) in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent—controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city.

Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low—paying jobs. However,if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics claim, an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.

Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.

Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if “other things are equal”.Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.
