I was fifteen months old, a happy kid until the day I fell. It was a    1    fall. I landed on a glass rabbit which cut my eye badly enough to make it blind. Trying to save the eye, the doctors stitched(缝合) the eyeball together where it was    2   , leaving a big ugly scar(疤痕) in the middle of my eye. The attempt    3   , but my mother, in all of her wisdom, found another doctor who knew that if the eye were removed    4   , my face would grow up badly distorted(扭曲),    5    my scarred, sightless, cloudy and gray eye lived on with me. As I grew, this sightless eye in so many ways    6    me.

I walked with my face looking at the    7    so that people would not see the    8  me. Yet my mother would say to me, at every turn, “Hold your head up high and    9    the world. If you hold your head up high, it will be OK, and people will see your    10    soul.” She continued this    11    whenever I was trying to hide.

Mama’s words were of great help for me to face the world    12   . As a teenager, even though I tended to look down to hide my shame, I found that sometimes when I held my head up high and let people know me, they    13    me. In high school, I was    14    both academically and socially. I was    15    elected class president. My mother’s words helped me begin to realize that by letting people look at my face, I let them   16    the intelligence and beauty behind both eyes, even if they couldn’t see it on the    17   .

Now I’m a happy wife and great mother. The message “Hold your head up high,” has been  18    many times in my    19    home. Each of my children has felt    20   Invitation, and the gift my mother gave me has lived on in another generation.

Almost Humans?

Scientists are building the world’s first thinking robot. It’s true: some say machines that walk, speak and feel will have been made by 2020. Kismet is the name of a robot which scientists have built this year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Kismet is different from traditional robots because it can show human emotions. Its eyes, ears and lips move to show when it feels happy, sad or bored. Kismet is one of the first robots of a new generation that look like human beings and can imitate human feelings.

Some people say that by 2020 we will have created robots with brains similar to those adult human beings. These robots will be designed to look like people to make them more attractive and easier to sell. What kind of jobs will they do? In the future, robots like Robonaut, a robot invented by NASA, will be doing dangerous jobs, like repairing space stations. They will also be doing more and more of the household work for us. In Japan, scientists are designing robots that will entertain people by dancing and playing the piano.

Meanwhile, people who worry about the future are wondering whether robots will become monsters? Will people themselves become increasingly like robots? Experts predict that more and more people will be wearing micro-chips in various parts of their body, which will connect them  to a wide variety of small machines. Perhaps we should not exaggerate(夸大) the importance of technology, but one may wonder whether, in years to come, we will still be falling in love, and whether we will still feel pain.

    Who knows?

1.Kismet is different from traditional robots because __________.

A.it is made in the MIT, USA               B.it is able to express its own feelings

C.it is the first modern robot                  D.it is able to show human feelings

2.Possibly, robots will be able to _______ in about ten years from now.

A.think like human beings                    B.do all kinds of jobs for us

C.look like human beings                       D.become dangerous monsters

3.The underlined word one can be best replaced by ________.

      A.some experts                                B.the writer himself

C.some scientists                                  D.people in general

4.It can be inferred from this passage that _________.

A.robots will take the place of human beings in future

B.the importance of technology has been exaggerated

C.scientists have designed different kinds of robots

D.robots might be a helper or a danger

Age plays a major part in people who are infected with cold, ie, in people who suffer from cold infection. A study done by University of Michigan, has shown information that seems to be true for the general population. Babies are the most cold infected group, generally more than six colds in their first years. Boys have more colds than girls up to the age of three. After three, girls are easier to get infected with cold than boys, and teenage girls get three colds a year to boys’ two. The general cold infections continue to get less into adults. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two cold every year. One interesting thing is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infection, because people in this age are most likely to have young children.

The study has also found that economy plays an important role as well. With more and more income, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family is getting lower and lower. Families with the lowest income usually suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income usually forces people to live in rooms more crowded than rooms owned by richer people, and the crowding usually leads to more chances for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also have an effect on our diet. Many scientists believe that a poorer diet usually leads into more possibilities of cold infection.

1.Which of the age groups has the highest frequency of cold infection?

       A.Small babies      B.Teenage boys     C.Adult women     D.Elderly people

2.The purpose of writing this passage is to _________.

A.give the readers some tips to avoid cold infection

      B.show a carefully-made study on cold infection

C.report the major reasons leading to cold infection

D.describe all the possible dangers of cold infection

3.How does economy play an important role in cold infection?

A.Families with lower income suffer less from cold infection

B.People who have lower income enjoy living in crowded rooms

C.Rich families can have better nutrition and never get infected

D.People with higher income have fewer chances of infection

4.From the passage we can infer that ___________.

A.age is the only important factor that connects with colds

B.families with the highest income will more easily get infected

C.people have lower frequency of infection as they grow older

D.a better diet may help people to fight against cold infection

The first weeks were a bit hard. Loneliness wasn’t the problem—I was in constant contact with clients by e-mail and phone. But I did feel claustrophobic(患幽闭恐怖症的). With wheels on my desk chair and the refrigerator just two feet away, I could work for twelve straight hours without ever standing up. There are no physical separation between my living room and work table, so the only way I found to feel like I was going “home” at the end of the day was to forbid my use of the working chair. At nine-thirty at night, when I turned my computer off, I felt a bit like the family dog reaching the high point of its day: “Whoohoo! I get to go for a walk!” Then, around eleven-thirty, I’d found myself turning on the computer again to solve some work issue that was pre-occupying me…

At the same time, I discovered that working this way had definite advantages. Not only did I save an hour from going to work and back home, I also gained a great deal of control over my time. There were fewer interruptions than in an office, I could schedule meetings and phone calls in blocks to increase the productive time around them, and the easy access to my workspace late at night and on weekends could obviously be of mixed effects. This was especially important to me since, in addition to consulting work, I was writing fiction and planning a new business. Working at home allowed me to manage all of these activities at once without losing significant sleep. This turned out to be well worth the claustrophobia, which also faded as I became more used to the new routine. A short walk in the late afternoon could reduce the shut-in feeling and make me get energetic again to work through the evening.

You might think that, with all this added time flexibility, I would even find a few hours to clean my apartment, but, unfortunately, this never happened.

1.The writer felt claustrophobic because _________.

A.she was lonely                               B.she worked long hours

C.she couldn’t go for a walk                  D.she worked alone for long

2.Where does the writer work?

A.In her own home.                           B.In an office.

       C.In a hospital.                                   D.At a newspaper.

3.What does the writer think of working late at night and on weekends?

A.It was convenient for her.                B.It has advantages and disadvantages.

C.She didn’t like it at all.                       D.She enjoyed working late.

4.What’s the writer’s general attitude towards her work?

A.She didn’t like it very much.               B.She enjoyed doing her work.

C.It allowed her little spare time.              D.It was too hard for her.

President Coolidge’s statement, “The business of America is business,” still points to a very important truth today—that business organizations have more prestige(威望) in American society than any other kind of organization, including the government. Why do business institutions still possess this great prestige?

One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the idea of competition than other organizations in society. Since competition is seen as the main source of progress and development by most Americans, competitive business organizations are respected. Competition is not only good in itself; it is the means by which other basic American values, such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity, and hard work are protected.

Competition protects the individual freedom by making sure that there is no monopoly(垄断) of power. Compared with one and all-powerful government, many businesses compete against each other for benefit. If one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers, it will lose to the competing business which treats its customers more fairly. Since there are many businesses competing for the customers’ dollars, they cannot afford to treat them unfairly and the customers would lose nothing.

A contrast(对比) is often made between business, which is competitive, and government, which is a monopoly. Because business is competitive, many Americans believe that it gives more support for freedom than government, even though government leaders are elected by the people while business leaders are not. Many Americans believe that competition is as important, or even more important, as democracy(民主) in protecting freedom.

Competition in business is also believed to strengthen the idea of equal opportunities. Competition is seen as an open and fair race where success goes to any person regardless of his or her social class background. Competitive success is commonly seen as the American choice of the higher social position which is not based on one’s family background. Business is therefore viewed as an expression of the idea of equal opportunities.

1.Which of the following is discussed as the main topic in the passage?

A.Competition in America’s business.      B.Freedom in America’s business.

C.Americans’ different values.              D.Business against government.

2.Americans believe that they can realize their personal values ________.

A.when given equal opportunities              B.through doing business

C.by protecting their individual freedom    D.by means of competition

3.Who can benefit from business competition?

A.Businessmen who compete

B.Customers of those businesses

C.People with the idea of equality and freedom

D.Both business organizations and government

4.It could be inferred from that the author believe ________.

A.business in other countries are not as competitive as those in the USA

B.business problems are very important to the American government

C.the competition in business plays a very important role in America

D.American business is the most powerful one in the whole world
