It is common to find advertisements on TV or radio. Most advertisements are very short for people to
remember.Nike, for example, has a simple slogan used all around the world: “Just do it”.
Advertisements often use funny situations as well.
Advertising gives useful information about which products to buy.But modern advertising does more
than give news about products and services.Today's advertisements try to get consumers to buy certain
brand s.Writers of advertisements are so skillful that they can sometimes persuade a consumer to wear
a certain kind of clothing, eat a special kind of cereal (谷类食物), or see a movie.Consumers might want
a product even if they did not see or hear advertisements for it.
For example, you probably do not need the newest cereal in the supermarket. There are probably
many cereal brands on your kitchen shelves. You may not have space on a shelf for another. But if you
see ads about a new cereal that is extratasty and has a free prize in the box, you may want it.
To be effective, advertising must be exciting, entertaining, or provide some pleasure. The secret of
writing good advertising copy is to offer a good idea as well as a product. The idea is what the ad is really
selling. One example is an ad that says eating a cereal will make a person do well in sports. That cereal
brand may sell better if consumers think it offers strength and energy.

读写任务
阅读下面的短文,  然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Diligence is the key to success, which means persisting in one's work. The true meaning of diligence is
to use time carefully for the purpose of improvement, or to work persistently without wasting time.
Laziness makes us useless. If we do not study and work hard we shall not be able to earn a living in
our community. There will be nothing we can do just because we have failed to learn anything by letting
the time pass unused. The life of a lazy man is of no use to himself and to others. The man who is too lazy
to work is the man who's generally most ready to beg or to steal.Everyone when he is young should learn
some useful work.
There is no better help to diligence than the habit of early rising, which just like all other good habits
ismost easily formed in youth. An English proverb says, “Lost time is never found again.” This means
that everybody must be diligent, and make good use of his time.Time is precious and is one of those many
things that cannot be purchased with money. One must study hard when he is young so that he may make
great progress, succeed in life and become useful to his country.
Lazy hands make a man poor, while diligent hands bring wealth. Therefore, we can say that diligence is
the mother of success.

About forty years ago, I was an instructor in the military college at Woolwich, when young Scoresby
was given his first examination.I felt extremely sorry for him.Everybody answered the questions well,
intelligently, while he did not know anything, so to speak. He was a nice, pleasant young man.It was
painful to see him stand there and give answers that were wonders of stupidity.
I knew of course that when examined again he would fail and be thrown out.So, I said to myself, it
would be a simple, harmless act to help him as much as I could.
I took him aside and found he knew a little about Julius Cesar's history. But he did not know anything
else. So, I tested him and worked him like a slave.I made him work, over and over again, on a few
questions about, which I knew he would be asked.
He came through very well on the day of the examination. He got high praise too, while others who
knew a thousand more than he were sharply criticized!
I thought that what in the end would destroy him would be the mathematics examination.I decided
to make his end as painless as possible. So, I pushed facts into his stupid head for hours. Finally, however,
I was shocked out of my mind.He took the first prize! And he got the highest praise.
