Amelia Earhart's (1897~1937) childhood was not the typical girl's.She liked nothing better than to
explore the banks of the Missouri River, where she climbed trees and hunted rats with her rifle (步枪).
She also built her own roller coaster (过山车).
The exciting life of the American aviation (航空) pioneer is dramatized in the movie Amelia, which is
due to come out on October 23.
After Earhart paid a pilot $1 to take her up for a short fly in his plane, aviation became her love and
career.
As she later explained, "Never do things others can do and will do, if there are things others cannot
do or will not do."
Earhart found herself a flying teacher and started to learn to fly.She took all sorts of jobs to pay for
the lessons and to buy a secondhand plane on her 24th birthday.
In 1932, Earhart flew solo (单独地) across the Atlantic. She became the first woman to make the
solo crossing. She also made a flying suit for women and went on to design other clothes for women who
led active lives."Now and then women should do for themselves what men have already
done-occasionally what men have not done-thereby establishing themselves as persons, and perhaps
encouraging other women toward greater independence of thought and action, " she said.
When she was nearly 40, Earhart was ready for a final challenge-to be the first woman to fly around
the world. However, in the flight, she and her navigator (领航员) disappeared in bad weather.

                                                     Organizing Yourself
Many new students find it hard to do all the study that has to be done;they find themselves putting
off reading assignment, jumping from one subject to another and rarely being quite certain what they are
trying to do during a particular study session. The best way to overcome these difficulties and to start
studying efficiently is to plan your time and organize your work.Let us suppose that you have 15 hours
per week of classes and that you decide to allow yourself a 40hour working week (a reasonable figure,
leaving you 70 waking hours for other activities).
You now have to decide how to divide the remaining 25 hours of private study.Naturally the decisions you make will change from week to week according to what essays have to be written and what reading
has to be done. Many people find it helpful to draw up each week a sevenday timetable showing the
occasions on which they will be working privately and the particular subjects that will be studying on
each occasion.By checking such a plan at times during the week, you can see what you have done and
what you have still to do:the whole plan becomes more manageable. There are a number of places where
you can study college library, public library, home, empty classrooms, on bus or train and each has
several obvious advantages and disadvantages. The college library is least busy in the evening, on
Wednesday afternoon, and all day Friday and Saturday.
When you are deciding where to study, keep the following suggestions in mind:

1. Try to study always in the same place. After a while the familiar surroundings will help you to switch
into the right frame of mind as soon as you sit down.
2. Find somewhere with as few distractions as possible.
3. Make sure that your study place has a good light and is warm (but not hot) and well aired.

1. What's the main idea of this passage?

A. Plan your time and organize your work.
B. Overcome your difficulties.
C. Be certain what you can do.
D. Find a quiet place for study.

2. A student's organization of his work will need to change according to________.

A. how many hours he is awake
B. how many subjects are required
C. how many lectures he misses
D. what he has to write and read that week

3.  A student is advised to make a weekly plan and to check it from time to time in order to________.

A. see whether he has calculated it properly
B. see what day of the week is
C. see what work still needs doing
D. see how he feels at the whole week

4. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a place where you can study?

A. The bus.
B. The train.
C. Home.
D. A public house.

Go ahead, talk to your dog.
As many a dog owner will prove, our furry friends are listening. Now, for the doubters, there is
scientific proof that they understand much of what they hear.A border collie called Rico can fetch at
least 200 objects by name, researchers in Germany say.The dog also appears to learn words for new
objects as easily as a 3yearold child would. Its wordlearning skill is as good as that of a parrot or
chimpanzee.
In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided
them randomly into 20 sets of 10 objects each. The dog waited with one of his owners in one room,
while an experimenter put a set of 10 objects into another room. Then, the owner told the dog to fetch
one of the items.  The dog had to go to the other room and bring the object back
In four trials, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right.Because the dog couldn't see anyone to get visual
clues about what to bring back, the scientists concluded that he must understand the meanings of certain
words.
In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a
room with seven toys whose names he already knew. The dog's owner then told him to fetch the object,
using a word Rico had never heard.
In 7 out of 10 trials, Rico picked the right object, suggesting that he figured out the answer by
process of elimination.A month later, he remembered half of the new names, which further impressed the
researchers.
Rico is probably smarter than the average dog, the scientists say.For one thing, he's a border collie,
a breed known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9yearold dog has been trained to retrieve toys by
their names since he was 9 months old.
It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say.Even if they do, they can't
talk back.Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweettalk your pup every now and then. You might just get a big, wet
kiss in return!

1. It is implied that________.

A. Rico is probably cleverer than the average dog
B. Only a few dogs can talk back to its owner
C. if a chimpanzee is trained, it can also recognize the names of objects
D. All dogs can understand words

2. How long is it since Rico's owner began to train him?

A. nine months
B. 3 years.
C. over nine years.
D. more than eight years.

3. Rico can do all the following except________.
A. understanding the meanings of certain words
B. picking the right object by process of elimination
C. remembering all of the new names he learned
D. retrieving toys by their names

Willa Cather once said, "When people ask me whether writing has been a hard or easy road, I always answer with the famous saying: The end is nothing; the road is all. That is what I mean when I say writing
has been a pleasure.I have never used the computer with the thought that one more task had to be done."
Like most writers, Willa Cather did not write books for the money that they brought her, but rather for
the pleasure that came in their writing. Her works were, like her, simple and full of the vigor of her days in Nebraska, where she grew from child to young womanhood and where she developed a deep love for
the treeless land of the great plain with its wild flowers, wheat fields and rivers.
"It's a rather strange thing about the flat country, " she wrote later."It takes hold of you or it leaves
you perfectly cold.A great many people find it very dull; they like a church tower, an old factory, a
waterfall, the country all made to look like a German Christmas card ...But when I come to the open
plain, something happens.I'm home.I breathe differently."

I find some of the ways in which Chinese parents show love for their children rather surprising.
Obviously there are some pretty big differences between our behavior and theirs in this respect. Most
Chinese children seem to get whatever they want, from ice creams, sweets and toys to endless attention
from the adults around them. Is this a sort of spoiling or love? I wonder.
Most westerners would think it is a sort of spoiling rather than love. We think love means educating
your children and bringing them up to lead an independent life. That includes learning to accept the fact
that he can't get everything he wants. As an adult, he will not always get the quite expensive car he hunts
for; she will not always manage to acquire the beautiful dress she longs for. So we try to teach our
children early to cope with the disappointment of not getting what they want.
I find too much such kind of love for the children can actually spoil them. To my surprise, it seems
that the life of a Chinese child is rather hard. Without doubt, the child is the very center of a whole circle
of adults, but on the other hand he or she is also expected to start studying according to adults' wishes.
Many children of my son's age take piano lessons, painting classes and even English lessons. It looks as
if Chinese adults think that just playing without learning anything is a waste of time. So in this respect our
children appear spoiled, just because they are allowed to play. But without this sort of play how can
Western children develop such free and rich imaginations? In fact the connection between this
imagination and the creativity is so important in the children' s future life.
1. In which way do most Chinese children seem to be spoiled?
A. They can be supported by their parents.
B. They can play whenever they want.
C. They need not behave themselves.
D. Their demands can always be satisfied.
2. In the author's opinion, the life of a Chinese child is________.
A. rather hard
B. rather easy
C. independent
D. colorful
3. The author thinks Western children appear spoiled because______.
A. they can manage time by themselves
B. they can have the freedom to play
C. they can take piano lessons
D. they may have expensive toys
4. The best title of the passage could be________.
A. Chinese children's early education
B. How to develop kids' imagination
C. What is the real love for children
D. The imagination and creativity
A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me
the question, "Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?" Her question was
a good one. It reminded me of something I  was taught as a youngster:life isn't fair. It's a disappointment,
but it's absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for
others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It's not and it won't be.
One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn't fair is that it keeps us from
feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have.We know
it's not "life's job" to make everything perfect:it's our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps
us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt a different hand;
everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making
decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn't fair doesn't mean we shouldn't do everything in our power to improve our own
lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don't recognize or
admit that life isn't fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a selfdefeating
emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When
we do recognize that life isn't fair, however, we feel compassion (热情) for others and for ourselves.
And compassion is a heartfelt emotion that delivers lovingkindness to everyone it touches. The next time
you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact.
You may be surprised that it can make you out of selfpity and into helpful action.
1. The writer thought of his friend's question as a good one because ________.
A. he also wanted to know who held such an opinion
B. it made him recall something during his childhood
C. like his friend, he also thought life was unfair
D. he learned something from the question as a youngster
2. The second paragraph of the passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. it's nice to accept the injustice of life
B. it's nice to surrender to life
C. we should not feel sorry for everything
D. we should not surrender to life
3. From the passage, we can learn that the author's attitude to life is ________.
A. negative
B. positive
C. selfpity
D. indifferent
4. Which of the following could be the best title of the text?
A. A Helpful Action: Try to Feel Compassion
B. A Good Question: Why Life Isn't Fair
C. Do Our Best to Improve Ourselves
D. Surrender to the Fact That Life Isn't Fair
Flying across the globe, whether on business or for leisure, is usually effortless-you just have to book
your ticket, pack your bags and show up at the airport with your passport. You board the plane and
several cocktails and movies later, you arrive at your destination. People are becoming more aware of
their smart travel. Here are some tips on how to be a clever traveler.
     Easy checkin
Avoid the queue and check yourself in by using the MAS Web CheckIn (malaysiaairlines.com) in
the comfort of your own home or office. Passengers can now check in online anytime from 24 hours to
90 minutes ahead of the scheduled departure time (出发时间). This is available for flights departing
from all MAS stations-except Paris, Kunming, Xiamen and Bandar Seri Begawan-to all MAS
destinations. You can even select preferred seats online.
     Bag hygiene (卫生)
No, we're not talking about the cleanliness of your bags! It's aviation talk for a bag that doesn't carry
any old baggage tags (标签) with barcodes (条码) that could confuse the baggage sensor (探测装置).
If you find yourself arriving in Sydney while your bag lands in Tokyo, it could be because of your old
baggage tag. Another reason why bags go missing could be the printing quality of the barcodes; bags
are misdirected because the sensors can't read the codes correctly.
     Less is more
Most airports around the world now set a weight limit of 32kg per piece of baggage. This will not
only help protect the airline workers' health, it will also be easier for you to carry your bags around.
Avoid packing dangerous goods or placing valuables inside your checkin luggage. Ensure that locks are
properly secured as a lot of baggage locks are found caught between the conveyor belts.
Smaller and softer bags are usually placed inside a tray at checkin to protect the locks from contact with
the conveyor belt.
1. The passage mainly tends to tell us how to travel________.
A. in a comfortable way
B. in a fashionable way
C. in a neat and orderly way
D. in a cheap and safe way
2. From the passage, we can know that passengers________.
A. can check in without going to the airport
B. have to check in 24 hours earlier
C. are required to check in on the MAS Web
D. can select their favorite seats when getting aboard
3. What are the reasons why the baggage is often missing according to the passage?
a. The bags are too old and dirty.
b. The sensors can't read the barcodes correctly.
c. The old tag is still on your bag.
d. The bags are too heavy to check in.
A. a; b
B. b; c
C. c; d
D. b; d
4. Judging from the writing style of the passage, it is________.
A. a piece of advertisement
B. a science report
C. a passage for professional reading
D. a passage from a magazine

Traditionally, customers may consider more about what they buy the product for. However, the image
of product and the consuming circumstance have become the key points to attract customers'awareness
and stimulate their buying needs. Frequently, customers buy goods just because they are cute, lovely and
unique. With a less emphasis on functional utilities, the experience and imaginative space are placed into
an increasingly important role. The image of product is emphasized, as well as the communication between
products and consumers."Customer behavior, which appears to be focused and directed at the object
and at pleasure, in fact responds to quite different objectives:displaced expression of desire, and the
production of a code of social values through the use of differential signs"(Baudrillard). The reason for
imageoriented customer behavior is probably that customers'lifestyle has been continuously virtualized by
paying much attention to "Virtual Reality". The evidences can be traced from computer games and
Hollywood movies, in which customers'preference for fleeing reality is perfectly matched.
This change requires us to take efforts to enhance product image by integrating style, color, taste,
shape and material, and communicate with customers creatively, imaginatively and innovatively, and enable
them to enjoy the distinctive experience image brings."A need is not a need for a particular object as much
as it is a'need'for difference." (Baudrillard) The typical example is Apple Computer's IMAC, which has
strong visual impact and outstanding dynamics. By this way, customer relationship can be set up through
image, and brand can be treated as living that can transform people. Other examples commonly used are
Disney Fairyland and Las Vegas, where new experience and imagination are fully demonstrated. In sum,
consumption is negotiation, a neverending conversation held in the languages of advertising, packaging,
branding, fashion, and entertainmet.

Because six of every ten accidental deaths happen to Chinese children who are playing, Shanghai
Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical (SJJP), a US-based pharmaceutical(制药的) giant, is working on
a Safe Kids Program to prevent injuries and deaths.
Since the Safe Kids Worldwide was set up in 1987 by Johnson & Johnson in the US, it has
contributed to a nearly 40 percent decline in the child death rate from accidental injuries there. Learning
from the successful experience, SJJP began the Safe Kids Program in China in 1999.
A recent survey conducted by SJJP and Safe Kids Worldwide China indicates that more than half
of the responding parents didn't know how to help their children keep safe and that half of the parents
didn't know about their children's motor skill development at different ages. The survey covered 3,359
Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou's parents with children between infancy(婴幼年) and 14.
Additionally, more than 40 percent of the parents didn't know how to help their children to prepare
well for sports activities. For example, they don't know how to have their children warm up or realize the
importance of a playground-check before sports activities.
To help correct the problems, SJJP and Safe Kids Worldwide China have been translating and
editing safety education materials, sending them to parents free of charge, and delivering free lectures
in kindergartens, schools and communities for the last ten years.
At present, a special team has been set up and traveling around 12 key cities of China to popularize
child sports safety knowledge and offer free training for young parents.
Though SJJP refuses to say how much it has spent on the program, it says the number in terms of
money, staff and technology, is large.
