Nowadays, there is a heated debate on whether pollutants should be cleaned in the air. Cleaning up the air, while good for our lungs, could make global warming worse. And the pollutants still go up around the air, along with carbon dioxide.

These pollutants are called aerosols and they include soot as well as mixtures of nitrogen (氮) and sulfur (硫) and other stuff into the air. Natalie Mahowald,a climate researcher at Cornell University, says,so far, scientists have mostly tried to understand what those aerosols do while they’re actually in the air.

“There are so many different kinds of aerosols,” she says. “Some are warm and some are cool. But in fact, humans are giving out a lot of extra aerosols, and they tend to cool for the most part. ”

The aerosols reflect sunlight back into space,or keep us cool. But it turns out that’s not all they do. These aerosols also influence how much carbon dioxide gets drawn out of the air by plants on land and in the sea.

“They can add nutrients, for example,to the ocean or to the land ,” Mahowald says. “But also while they’re in the atmosphere they can change the climate, and thus that also can influence the amount of carbon, the land or the ocean can take up. So there are quite a few different ways that aerosols can act on each other. ”

Mahowald’s results suggest that reducing those pollutants could be an even bigger problem than realized, when you consider that aerosols help remove carbon dioxide from the air by encouraging plant growth. Hard numbers on this effect are highly uncertain at the moment, but this could turn out to be quite significant.

And studying it is not easy because the effects aren’t well understood. For example, nitrogen can be a fertilizer (肥料) , but it can stop plant growing when nitrogen comes out of the air in acid form.

Right now it seems like we’re much more likely to clean up aerosol pollution, while increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. So scientists, unfortunately, may have a chance to see whether this experiment on our planet should continue or not.

Downing the last drop of an expensive famous brand H20 as well as remembering to throw the empty bottle in the recycling bin, makes you feel pretty good about yourself, right? It shouldn’t. Even when the bottles are recycled, there are all kinds of other consequences of swallowing bottled waterways Melissa Peffers, the air-quality programme manager for Environmental Defense.

The containers are often filled in faraway lands, then shipped from abroad, and stored in refrigerators at your local store. Compare that with the influence on environment of turning on your tap, filling a glass, and drinking up!

Anyone who is choosing bottled water for health reasons is misguided, says Peffers.   “Most bottled water is just tap water. ”And what comes out of your tap is carefully monitored to follow the strict rules. Consider another fact that bottled water is surprisingly expensive, especially when compared with the alternative, which is almost free, and it is astonishing that America’s desire for bottled water seems impossible to satisfy, reaching nearly 30 billion bottles a year.

“My parents’ generation never had bottled water”’says Isabelle Silverman,an Environmental Defense legal adviser. She has made a commitment to going bottle free.   “You don’t need to fetch it home from the store, and it’s cheaper,” she adds.

Bottled water’s role as a status symbol needs to change,Peffers points out. So when a waiter at an expensive restaurant offers“And what’s your drink?”that,no reason to forget your conviction (信念) .“Don’t be afraid to say, ‘I’ll have tap. ’ Say it loud enough that the other tables nearby can hear you”’Peffers says. “And then spend that money on a dessert. ”

   D. To persuade them to speak confidently in public.

One morning I stood beside the window. Across the river, the 1        decorated the edge of the shore in white. I stood 2        and looked at what the night’s storm had 3     .

I leaned forward and stood close to the window. There was a goose out there, quite 4     ,its wings folded to its sides, its feet 5        to the ice. Then from the dark skies,I saw a line of swans. They moved in their own 6        style, graceful and free.

As I watched, the leader 7        from the sky and landed on the ice. As the swans surrounded the frozen goose,I 8        it might be killed by those great beaks (鸟瞭).

The long necks were lifted and curved down, again and again. At last, the goose’s head 11     its body pulled. Then the goose was 12        and standing on the ice. Their powerful beaks cleaned the goose’s 14      from top to bottom, chipping off the ice held in the feathers.

15      at last the goose’s wings were free, the four swans 16        and joined the group. They restarted their eastward journey cheerfully.

Cheating is nothing new. But today, the Administrative Department for Education finds that examples of academic dishonesty on the part of students have become more frequent—and are less likely to be punished--than in the past. Cheating appears to have gained acceptance among good and poor students alike.

Why is student cheating on the rise? No one really knows. Some blame the trend on a general loosening of moral values among today’s youth. Others have attributed (归因于) increased cheating to the fact that today’s youth are far more practical than their idealistic ancestors. Whereas in the late sixties and early seventies, students were filled with visions about changing the world, today’s students feel great pressure to survive and succeed. In interviews with students at high schools and colleges around the country, both young men and women said that cheating had become easy. Some suggested they did it out of hate for teachers they didn’t respect. Others looked at it as a game. Only if they were caught, some said, would they feel guilty. “People are com-petitive ,” said a second-year college student named Anna, from Chicago. “There is a potential fear. If you don’t do well, your life is going to be ruined. The pressure is not only from parents and friends but from yourself. To achieve. To succeed. It’s almost as though we have to surpass people to achieve our own goals. ”

Edward Wynne, editor of a magazine blames the rise in academic dishonesty in the schools. He claims that administrators and teachers have been too hesitant to take action. Dwight Huber, chairman of the English Department at Amarillo sees the matter differently, blaming the rise in cheating on the way students evaluated. “I would cheat if I felt I was being cheated ,” Mr Huber said. He feels that as long as teachers give short-answer tests rather than essay questions and rate students by the number of facts they can memorize rather than by how well they can combine and process information, students will try to beat the system. “The concept of cheating is based on the false belief that the system is legal and there is something wrong with the individuals who’re doing it ,”he said, “that’s too easy an answer. We’ve got to start looking at the system. ”

At present time, roller skating (滑旱冰) is easy and fun. But many years ago,it wasn’t easy at all. Before 1750,people never tried skating on wheels. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin’s work was making instru-ments (工具In his free time he liked to play the violin. Merlin was a man with many ideas and many dreams. People called him a dreamer.

One day Merlin received an invitation to go to an important party. He was very pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near,Merlin began to think. He wanted to find a way to make a wonderful entrance at the party. Merlin had an idea. He thought that he would attract much attention if he could skate into the room.

Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll (滚动) • Finally,he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skate shoes. Merlin was very proud of them. He dreamed of arriving at the party and skating into the room while playing the violin. He was sure that everyone would be very surprised.

On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room, playing his violin. Everyone was really surprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skating.
