One Canada, Two Languages

　　Canada is one of the few nations in the world to have two official languages：English and French．There are 10 provinces in the country but only one of these－Quebec is known as“French Canada”．This is because it was founded by French explorers while British adventures discovered the rest．

　　Canada left the British empire(帝国)in 1867 to become an independent country, and English and French have been recognized as the official languages ever since．

　　Most people speak English as their first language and the two national television networks broadcast in English throughout the country．Apart from in Quebec and a few places on the east coast, French television is very rare．

　　The same goes for traffic signs and menus, for example．Outside of Quebec, there are only a few places where you’ll see traffic signs in French．In restaurants, it’s almost impossible to find French on the menu unless you are in the heartland(中心地带)of French Canada．However, all products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels(标签)and instructions in both languages．

　　In Canada’s English speaking provinces, official bilingualism(双语)means that students can choose to complete a special French language course．Under this programme, they are taught most of their subjects in French．

　　If a student begins the course in kindergarten(幼儿园)or Grade One, it is likely that all their lessons will be in French．However, if they start at junior high school, 25 per cent of the teaching will continue to be in English．

　　In fact, nobody has the right to ask for anything more．If we humans fail to keep a balance between our needs and the needs of the natural world, our great round Earth will no longer be fit to live on．

　　Since we love the beauty and grace of deer and moose running in our woods, protection against over-hunting is also a must．If hunters break our laws and kill animals when it is not time, then these species won't be there any more－for beauty or hunting．

　　Finally, if man keeps polluting and littering the waters－fresh and salt－nonbiodegradable substances(非降解物质)will build up and make the water unfit to support underwater lives．Again, many people who make their living from the sea will no longer be able to．

　　We need this balance to keep the beauty of our world for ourselves and for our children and grandchildren．For if that beauty disappears, everything man can hope to achieve will be lost forever．

     One in five US teenagers have some degree of hearing loss,  according to researchers who said the
problem is growing."Teenagers really underestimate how much noise they are exposed to" Dr Josef
Shargorodsky said.__①__
     The study,  published in the Journal of the American Medical Association,  compared national surveys between the early 1990s and the mid2000s.In the first survey,  about 15 percent of teenagers had some
degree of hearing loss.__②__Most of the hearing loss was in one ear only.While it was usually slight, 
 one in 20 adolescents had more pronounced (显著的) problems-up 50 percent since the first survey.
     Hearing loss is very common in the elderly,  Grimes said,  but she added that it was concerning to see
it come into the younger age groups.In babies and young children,  hearing problems are known to delay
language development,  which in turn influences performance in other areas.Slight hearing loss,  for instance,  makes it difficult to distinguish between highfrequency consonants like "s" and "f"
__③__The science is less clear for adolescents,  but it is easy to imagine how being hard of hearing could
influence learning,  said Grimes."We know from a lot of data that noisy classrooms are one of the biggest

     One of the strongest arguments for the raising of the school leaving age(ROSLA)has been that it will
bring us some way nearer to"equality of opportunity".
     Many people like to think of our present system of schooling as providing plenty of steps up the
ladder of success for clever children. It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can be
missed out when the state system is obviously so complete. It is obvious, for instance, that many children
from less wealthy homes reach university or do well in other ways.
     Unfortunately we now have plenty of proofs that many children of every level of ability do much less
well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the
intelligence(智力)of all male 18 - to - 20 - year - olds. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two
highest ability groups had left school at 15.
     It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the
same now as it was in 1939. One study of 5,000 children from birth to 21 years old shows that up to half
the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but far more boys than girls stay in education after 16.
     It is clear from this and many other proofs that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes-money, social respectability, and interesting jobs-which higher education gives. It is clear
too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social background. Their parents
often need the extra money another money-earner would bring in; they don't value education for itself
because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and
daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, "it's up to you".

     One day the employees of a large company in St Louis, Missouri returned from their lunch break
and were greeted with a sign on the front door. The sign said: "Yesterday the person who has been
hindering (阻碍) your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral (葬礼)
in the room that has been prepared in the gym."
     At first everyone was sad to hear that one of their colleagues had died, but after a while they
