I am an English teacher, with over 15 years' experience of teaching in London. I started
the DailyStep audio email lesson service because I noticed that when I started their English
course, my students' speaking and listening skills were much weaker than their reading and
writing skills. In my view, this is because education in school does not focus enough on
communication skills. DailyStep is designed to remedy this situation by offering more practice
in speaking, listening and vocabulary.
I am crazy about the English language and it is a real pleasure for me to see the
development of my students' language skills.
I majored in (以….为专业)law at university and then worked for three years as a
researcher and journalist for Sky television and BBC magazines. I decided to change to
English teaching because of my love of the English language and my wish to move into more
satisfying work.
Then I qualified (取得资格)as an English teacher in 1992. My first teaching job was at
a language school in Covent Garden, London, where I taught examination classes and
Business English . After two years, I moved to the Nippon Club where I taught General
English and Business English courses for 9 years. I also developed a unique course called
British Society & Culture, covering all areas of British life, such as politics, law, e
ducation & music. At the same time, taught Business, Financial& Law English in the financial
centre of London. My students included staff (工作人员)from banks and law firms.
As well as running the DailyStep website, I also provide in-company English speech
training for companies in London. If you have an important speech coming up and would like
some information about how I can help you, please email me at
jane@dailystep.com.

I am trying to muster (鼓起) the courage to toss_away my mobile phone to enjoy a more peaceful
and ringfree life.
Can you imagine not having your mobile phone? In our hightech,  inahurry age,  a cellfree life is a hard
concept to swallow. Our mobile phones can now access the Internet,  and many people feel the need to
express their every thought on their blog pages. If I gave up my cellphone,  people would think I was mad.
I wish I had the strength to toss away my technology.I have an office phone,  a home phone,  an email
and if people want to contact me,  they can.If I'm out,  people can leave a message.Do they really need
to find me 24/7?However,  I'm a bit like Frodo in the movie Lord of the Rings. The power of the ring is
too strong and I can't let it go.
Mobile phones have become necessary tools in our busy life. For most people,  they hold all contacts
and many of us don't write up address books any more. The latest phones carry our music,  pictures,
movies and everything else.We feel lost without this device and when we do misplace it,  we feel cut off
from our fellow.
"Where have you been?" said a friend,  who saw me a week after I lost my cellphone,  "I tried calling
you,  but you disappeared. You disappeared off the face of the Earth." See,  when you don't have a
mobile phone,  you don't exist.
I'm not really going to toss my mobile phone away,  in fact.We humans are such social animals and
mobile phones serve us well.So in 2009,  I've decided not to serve my mobile phone.Like all machines,
I can always turn it off.

A. give away

A. Mobile phones can do anything for us.
B. Mobile phones have become very important in our life.
C. We could not live without mobile phones.
D. We would be cut off by our fellow without mobile phones.

4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. The writer is not really going to toss his mobile phone away.

C. The writer decides not to serve his mobile phone.
D. We humans can control ourselves and machines.

I am truly saddened about what is going on in my school district, especially in the school where I am
currently working.
Why are so many students not doing well? Why is there such a huge achievement gap between urban
and suburban students? Just this week, in my school the seventh grade team leader called a meeting to
discuss academic detention (放学后留校). The purpose of the detention is to allow students who are
doing poorly a second chance to redo the work. Now if a student did not understand an assignment I have no trouble allowing that student to redo a test or give some extra credit work, but if a student did poorly
because he/she opted(选择) not to do the work out of sheer laziness, that student should not be given a
second chance.
And parents should be held accountable for their children. That is another reason why there is such a
huge achievement gap. All children should be monitored at home in order to achieve great success in
school. Perhaps it might be a great idea for urban school districts to offer free classes to parents on how to help their students at home. Of course this idea is far fetched, after all we do not want to offend the
parents. What we will do instead is to spend a fortune on teacher training because if the kids are not doing well it must be the fault of the teacher. That kind of mindset, if allowed to continue will be a perfect recipe
for greater achievement gaps.
I started working at my current school in August and I have been in the teaching field for 25 years.
What I believe is that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make that  horse drink. You can't force kids to change bad habits over  night, nor can we afford to lower standards just so a kid can  pass a class.
1. The seventh grade team leader in the author's school called    a meeting to ________.
A. analyse the reason for the huge achievement gap between students
B. find out who is to blame for the huge achievement gap between students
C. talk about giving students who are doing poorly a second  chance to redo the work
D. discuss how to narrow the huge achievement gap between students
2. The author believes that a student can be given a second chance ________.
A. if he did poorly the first time
B. for whatever reason he did poorly the first time
C. if he failed the first time in spite of his efforts
D. if he comes from a suburban area
3. In the last paragraph, the author intends to tell us that ________.
A. a student can make improvement only when he is willing to
B. teachers are to blame if his students are doing poorly
C. the school should force those students to work harder if   they're doing poorly
D. the school should treat different students with different standards
