India is traditionally a tea-drinking country. But, it is now gaining a new taste for coffee. This has led international coffee companies to consider opening businesses in the huge market. Local business people are also hoping to profit from the country’s tea-drinking habits. They want to open new stores that offer tea.
It is ten thirty in the morning in India. Two cafes are within meters of each other, near a college in New Delhi. And they are selling a lot of tea. Their main customers are undergraduate students.
“We have a lot of break between classes, so whenever we get time, we just go and we enjoy ourselves. It’s a lot of fun , especially when you are with people you enjoy spending time with.”
In the past ten years , cafes have become increasingly popular in India. The country’s huge young population have quickly taken to the coffee culture.
Coffee stores have spread from major cities like New Delhi and Mumbai to smaller towns. Coffee use has doubled in the last ten years . It is the success of this market that has gained the attention of companies like the American-based coffee chain Starbucks. The company will open its first store in India later this year. Other companies like Lavazza and Costa Coffee are already there.
Yet, the growth of coffee will not reduce the popularity of tea. Indians drink eight times more tea than coffee. They have been drinking tea for more than one hundred and fifty years. The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world. But to those who are new to it all, sometimes it can be confusing.
October is usually the busiest month in the college calendar. Universities have something called Freshers’ Week for their newcomers. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life.
However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, the prospect(前景)of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nerve-wracking(令人头痛的). Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should you join?
Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot. So just take it all in slowly. Don’t rush into anything that you’ll regret for the next three years.
Here is some top advice from past students on how to survive Freshers’ Week:
●Learn rules. Make sure you know British social etiquette(礼节). Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends.
●Be kind. Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a head start in making friends.
●Be sociable. The more active you are, the more likely you’ll be to meet new people than those who never leave their room.
●Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you’re in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you’re friendly.
So with a bit of clever planning and effort, Freshers’ Week can give you a great start to your university life and soon you’ll be passing on your experience to next year’s new recruits

Would you work for nothing? Non-paid internships(实习生) have been common in the US for some time now. But these days, they are becoming more and more popular in other countries, too. Is this a good thing?

For young people, there are clear benefits to doing an internship. Firstly, interns get a valuable insight into an industry they might be interested in working for. Also, having done an internship looks good on your CV, which is very important in today’s competitive job market. A lucky few may be hired at the end of the internship, so it’s a good way of getting a foot in the door. For other interns, there is even extra welfare: deals on clothes if they’re working in the fashion in industry, free trips if they’re working for a travel agency…and so on.

There are obvious benefits to companies, too. They can help select employees who are better. “If you put two young people to work as interns for twelve weeks, you’ll soon see who is good.” said one manager. Besides, they can save money. “If I use interns, I don’t have to pay another salary, or worry about paying pensions or giving people overtime pay.” said another.

So, what do interns do? Most tasks are fairly routine. These may include photocopying, filing documents, or writing up notes from meetings. At times, interns may be given jobs with more responsibility, such as making sales calls, writing newsletters or updating websites.

However, for some interns the experience can become unpleasant. “I worked for a theatre company for six weeks and spent the whole time photocopying scripts and making the tea and coffee. It is dull.” said one intern. On the other hand, non-paid internships violate the labor law in some countries, where workers must be paid the minimum wage and paid for overtime.

Internship can provide benefits to both sides, but these unpaid workers are also easy to take advantage of!
