【原文】

M: Hello. Do you carry walking shoes?

W: Yes, we do. This is such a large shoes store that we can carry almost everything.

M: That’s good. Can you show me some walking shoes?

W: Yes. This pair is made of calf leather, very soft.

M: Let me try it on, and see how it fits.

W: It looks comfortable.

M: But it seems a little tight.

W: That’s because you are wearing heavy socks.

M: What about if I take the inner sole(鞋垫)off?

W: That’ll help.

M: Yes, it’s more comfortable now. But can I change these round shape shoelaces(鞋带)?

W: You can if you want. But this original one lasts longer.

M: I know that. But it loosens easily.

W: That’s all right. I’ll change you another pair of shoelaces.

M: Thanks. I also need some shoes polish if there’s any.

W: We carry plenty of them here.

M: I’ll take two. Black and brown, one each.

【题目】 In some US states, gym class is changing. Many schools are focusing on getting students ready for life after high school. They are looking for ways to leave even the least athletic kids with the will and skills to keep moving. For gym teachers, that means less focus on who is best at a sport. It means less rope climbing and dodgeball(躲避球).1

A New Model

In one New York school district, there is no “gym” class. 2They include dance, self- defense and rock climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line skating, and boating.

“We want our kids…, to be active for life,” said Ron Whitcomb. He manages the physical education, or PE, program for the Victor, New York, school district.

A US law passed in 2015 increased the importance of health and fitness in education. It also gave more funding(资金) to PE programs.

Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. 3Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools.

Outside the Gym

Tracy Krause teaches PE in Washington State. For a few years, she has taken students fly-fishing and rock climbing. 4It combines PE, English, and science into one program. “We want kids to leave with a plan for the future,” Krause said. “I think the same needs to be true about their health.”

Lifelong Skills

In Washington, D. C, all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth- and seventh-graders learn parkour(跑酷). Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth- graders learn how to read a compass. High schoolers swim. 5

Teachers hope to keep students liking, not hating, PE. That means finding sports or activities they enjoy.

A.They are also cutting back on team sports.

B.It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes.

C.Other schools are now following his program.

D.Instead there is a list of different fitness classes.

E.The school district’s goal is to teach lifelong skills.

F.She is part of her school’s “Outdoor Academy” program.

G.Kids who are not as athletic sometimes hate playing team sports.

【题目】 You can take fish oil. You can invest in a language class. or some hours of exercise every week. There are countless ways to improve your memory and cognitive functioning(认知功能). You know, the brain-training industry is expected to reach $ 8 billion by 2022. But the cheapest, easiest and most time-tested way to sharpen your brain is right in front of your face. That's why moms are always on their kids' cases to turn off the TV and pick up a good book. But there's something astonishing about how it can make it.

The most basic effect occurs in the area associated with language reception. Processing written material - from the letters to the words to the sentences to the stories themselves - takes your attention to interpret the information. Typically, when you read, you have more time to think, judge and even criticize. And the very nature of such an ordinary activity encourages the brain to work harder and better, deepening your understanding of your course and your future career.

And the benefits of reading continue long after you've put down that great book. It is clarified that some of those benefits last for five days. We call that a shadow activity, almost like a muscle memory - that means, even if you are a retired sportsman now, some skills can still be stored in your memory. That means the language part of the brain would get a workout from reading.

What if you are a poor, or even a dyslexic, reader who feels as if you’ll never be able to read enough to get these benefits? A book can fix that problem too! According to a study, one hundred hours of remedial(补救的) reading classes significantly improved the quality of the brains' white matter. where information is processed. So turn off your phone and your computer, set aside a good hour or two - and just read on a regular basis.

On Christmas Eve,seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully.Skim milk was $2.99 white bread,89 cents with a 10-cent discount Leaving the cashier,he calculated that he had saved 80 cents today.

At the exit, the wind reminded him of his gloves.”Where are they?”Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of this coat.George made a second thorough search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag.Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.

Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25discount,for just $35.00,ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable. He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves,so they looked like new.Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.

George, calm on the outside but nervous inside,re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting at the bread counter,to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store.Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be in vain.He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no.Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.

“Society has changed, people have changed,”he murmured to himself.”Years ago,if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost.”

Yet he did not give up hope.He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his.The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women’s and the other not black.a
