Text 1

W: Tell me something about your trip abroad.

M: We spent three days in Scotland, one week in Spain, and five days in Switzerland.

  Text 2

M: What do you plan to be doing ten years from now?

W: I'll have to think about that. In fact, it's very likely that I'll be teaching.

  M: Anything besides teaching?

W: Yes. I want to do some translation, some traveling and also learn another foreign language and a … a musical instrument.

M: Sounds nice. But do you think you'll be able to do all that with a baby on your knee?

  Text 3

W: Jim failed his examination again. He must have a lot of difficulties with English.

M: Yeah. He must be terribly worried.

W: He is. He can't be in a very good mood.

M: Why don't we go and cheer him up?

W: Good idea. Maybe we can give him some help.

  Text 4

M: My brother isn't like me. I like playing chess while he likes playing cards.

W: I think chess is fairly similar to cards, though I don't play cards very often.

M: I wouldn't say they're totally different. But chess is certainly more difficult and requires more concentration.

W: I go along with you there. That's why there're fewer people who play chess.

  Text 5

W: Here it's thirty degrees in the middle of April and most of you Chinese are still wearing jackets. Why is that?

M: There's a traditional saying which goes something like “Keep cold in autumn, keep warm in spring.” That's why.

  W: I don't understand.

M: People believe that if you follow this rule, you won't get sick when the weather changes.

W: How interesting! I've never heard that before.

  Text 6

M: Have you heard of Zhang Hua?

W: You mean the university student who gave his life in order to save an old peasant?

M: Right. Some people think it wasn't worth it. They think an old peasant's life is not as valuable as a university student's.

W: I don't see it that way. I think we should place others before ourselves.

M: Yeah, most Chinese people think so. I'm afraid people in the West would weigh the situation and would only risk their lives if they thought it was important.

  W: Yes, it's a matter of philosophy.

  Text 7

W: Excuse me, do you think you could help me find my school bag?

M: What? Why are you looking for your school bag in the dining hall?

W: I came here for lunch and forgot to pick it up when I finished eating.

M: Well, we haven't seen it. You'd better put up a note.

W: Yes, I guess so. What luck! My textbooks and exercise-books are all in it. How can I go to my lessons without them?

  Text 8

M: Want to come to my place tonight?

W: Well, I suppose I could. I was thinking of going to the movies tonight, though.

M: My friend Xiao Wang has just come back from America. He's coming to talk about his experiences abroad. Do come and join us.

W: Which Xiao Wang? The young man who likes to boast?

M: He used to be like that, but he might have changed these years.

W: Well, perhaps. But I think I'd rather go to the movies tonight.

  Text 9

W: I'm tired of looking at TV. Let's go to the movie tonight.

M: All right. Do you want to go downtown? Or is there a good movie in the neighborhood?

W: I'd rather not spend a lot of money. What does the paper say about neighborhood theaters?

M: Here's the list on page…Column 3. Here it is. Where's the Rialto? There's a good movie there.

W: That's too far away. And it's hard to find a place to park there.

M: Well, the Grand Theater has Gone with the Wind.

W: I saw that years ago. I don't want to see it again. Anyway, it's too long. We wouldn't get home until midnight.

M: The Center has a horror film. You wouldn't want to see that.

W: No, indeed. I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight.

M: That's all about there is. Unless we change our minds and go downtown.

W: No, we just can't afford it. There must be something else we haven't seen.

M: Here, look for yourself. I can't find anything else.

  W: Look at this!

  M: What?

W: In the TV schedule, there's a baseball game on TV tonight.

M: I wasn't looking for a TV program. I was looking at the movie ads.

W: I know, but I just happened to notice it. New York is playing Boston.

M: That ought to be good. I wouldn't mind watching that.

W: OK. Let's stay home. We can go to a movie Friday.

  Text 10

M or W: Jack was friendly with most of his neighbors but there was one woman who lived in his street and whom he had always disliked. She was too interested in other people's business, and she was always borrowing things from her neighbors and then forgetting to return them.

This woman knew that Jack had a new rope and one day she came to his door and asked to borrow it.

“well,” said Jack, “before I lend you my rope, I must know what you want it for.”

“One of our neighbors is cutting a big branch off the tree in my garden,” she answered, “and he needs the rope to pull it down with, so that it does not fall on my roof.”

Jack said nothing, but went into his house. The woman heard him talking to his wife, and a moment later he came out again.

“I'm sorry,” he said to the woman,“but I cannot lend you the rope just now. My wife is spreading flour on it.”

“Spreading flour on it?” the woman cried. “But how can anyone spread flour on a rope? Are you trying to make a fool out of me?”

“Certainly not!” answered Jack. “It's quite easy to spread flour on my rope when I do not wish to lend it to somebody.”
