Until late in the 20th century, most Americans spent time with people of different generations. Now middle-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves.

That's because we group people by age.We put our three-year-olds together in day-care centers, our 13-year-olds in schools and sports activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior-citizen homes. Why?

We live away from the old for many reasons.Young people sometimes keep away from the old to free themselves from fears of aging and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes.Sometimes it's so hard that we stay away from the people who need us the most.

Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old.And we have discovered that they often save the young.

A reporter moved her family into a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter baked banana bread for the neighbours and had her children deliver it and visit them.Soon the children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects.“My children have never been less lonely,”the reporter said.

The young,in turn, save the old.Once I was in a rest home(养老院)when a visitor showed up with a baby, who was immediately surrounded.People who hadn't gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair.Even those who had seemed asleep woke up to watch the child.Babies have all astonishing power to comfort and cure.

Grandparents are a special case. They give their grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it,“My grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end.”Grandchildren speak of attention they don't get from worried parents.“My parents were always telling me to hurry up,and my grandparents told me to slow down,”one friend said.A teacher told me she can tell which children have relationships with grandparents:they are quieter, calmer and more trusting.

1.Now in an American family, people can find that________.

A.children never live with their parents

B.not all working people live with their parents

C.aged people are supported by their grandchildren

D.grandchildren are supported by their grandparents

2.The reason that old people are left alone may be that________.

A.the old don't like to live in a big family

B.the young can't get enough money to support the old

C.different generations have different ways of living

D.the old are too weak to live with the young

3.The fact the reporter told us shows that________.

A.old people in America lead a hard life

B.old people in America enjoy banana bread

C.she had no time to take care of her children

D.old people are easy to get along with

4.Why are some children quieter, calmer and more trusting?

A.Because they have relationships with their grandparents.

B.Because their worried parents ask them to act like that.

C.Because they have nothing to worry about.

D.Because their teachers ask them to act like that.

Pineapple Awards Celebrate Fruits of Science

We live in a world of wonder but not in a world of magic. And understanding that world does not mean learning a few tricks at Hogwarts.Instead, it means understanding how important science is in our daily lives.

Just take a moment and look around your home. The electric lamp on your desk, the silicon microchip in your mobile phone, your mother's laundry detergent; they are all the results of science.

To get people more aware of these wonders that surround us, guokr.com, a science website, and Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Museum have established the “Pineapple Science Awards.” The awards are to be given annually and recognize recent achievements in chemistry, physics, medicine and biology, mathematics and psychology. There are also two special awards for discoveries that are imaginative, fun and thought-provoking.

Zhou Xinyue's research certainly met those criteria. The Sun Yat-Sen University professor was among the first group of Pineapple winners. She conducted an experiment that showed that counting money can ease pain.Professor Zhou had people count money and then dipped their hands into hot water. It turns out that after flipping through a brick of RMB, people can keep their hands in hot water for a longer time.I suppose this proves that although money can't buy you happiness, it can certainly make your life less painful.

If that sounds a bit frivolous, it's all in keeping with the spirit of the awards. They are intended to be light-hearted.That is why the pineapple was chosen as the awards’ symbol.Ji Shisan, the founder of guokr.com, said, “This nutritive fruit has a bright color and pleasing taste while shaped in a strange way, which indicates the awards are pleasing, interesting, nourishing, and a bit strange.”

Pineapple winner Zhou Xinyue added, “Some research topics seem to be weird but actually have deep meaning, which inspires us in a different way.The topics might be funny, but the research method should be serious and scientific.”

Are you interested in science? Then reach for the sky.You might end up with a pineapple in your hands.

With only a click of the mouse, rumors can be forwarded between microblogs very quickly. As an example, recently, perceptive netizens discovered that some photos displayed on microblogs depicting Beijing’s June rainstorm had actually been fabricated.

Sina.com is one of the major internet portals(门户网站) in China with hundreds and thousands of users, and a majority of celebrities and renowned citizens have their microblog accounts on this portal. As recently as six months ago, the website decided to establish a specialized team to verify rumors and provide accurate information for its users. Tan Chao is in charge of the team.

“Before I took the job, I usually couldn’t identify what information was real and what was fake. But during the rumor verification process, we discovered that a lot of information was false, including fake photos, fake news stories and rumors that had been spread through microblogs.”

It‘s not just website portals which are taking on fact-checking responsibilities, but also a number of civic-minded netizens, who recently set up a Rumor Verification Federation on Sina.com’s microblog system to help netizens identify fake information online.

Dianzizheng is the team leader of the federation. He says they’ve publicized more than 150 pieces which refute rumors, which attracted more than 10 thousand visitors within two months.

“We live in an age of new media, so we can’t use the old methods to verify rumors. We can’t wait for the media to verify the facts with related administrative departments and then release a formal announcement. We can’t allow rumors to run rampant and then deal with it, we need to fight rumors while they’re spreading. I think that this is the best way to deal with rumors nowadays.”

Some experts say this demonstrates the advantages of the internet compared to other traditional media. The open platform allows information to be examined and clarified by netizens. But experts like Ding Wenguo, President of the Journalism and Communication College at the China University of Political Science and Law says this self-correction function of the internet is still quite limited.

“It’s still quite difficult to tell which information is true in such an open environment by just reading a number of different opinions on the same issue. This is something which we need to pay attention to. If society is deluged with too much false information, and it’s allowed to spread in such a fast manner, then people will be suspicious of all kinds of information including important information from authorities. It also exacerbates(恶化) problems relating to social communications and mutual-understanding, which in turn harms society as a whole.”

Experts suggest that the government should react more quickly in the internet age. Once a rumor begins to spread, administrative departments should make announcements as early as possible to dispel rumors before they lead to bad outcomes.

1.Sina.com decided to found a specialized team to ____.

A. limit the number of microblogs

B. advance the development of microblogs

2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

A. All the rumors have been spread through microblogs.

B. Sina.com is the most popular Internet portal in China.

C. The photos displayed on microblogs might be fake.

D. Traditional media tend to get rumors examined and clarified.

3.The underlined word "fabricated" in the first paragraph can be replaced by "__".

A. dug out      B. made up               C. got round                 D. given away

4.What is the best way to prove rumors on microblogs?

A. Examining and checking while they are spreading.

B. Substituting the Internet for traditionally media.

C. Shutting down the website immediately.

D. Making announcements after they are spread.

5.The writer cited Ding Wenguo's words in Paragraph 8 to __.

A. draw a conclusion            B. support an argument

C. introduce a topic          D. describe a scene
