Speaking of what sort of smartness is most desirable in human conduct, a friend of mine has this to say:
Real stnartness must be something that can be practised repeatedly and infinitely. Then, he goes on to relate
this event: In one European country there resided some Lebanese. Upon learning that ambulance rides there
are provided free to patients in emergency cases, they rented an apartment near a hospital. Each time they
wanted to go home, they just pretended to be sick, calling for an ambulance. On arrival at the hospital, they
said now that they felt much better and had no need of any treatment. The next moment saw them leaving,
safe and sound, to their apartment.
Their "being-clever" affords them only short-lived pleasure and joy; it could not he practised repeatedly,
still less infinitely. Such smartness is based on "too clever to be wise". Once seen through, they will lose the
benefits they profited by playing dirty tricks. They will suffer the impairment of their own image and reputation
as well as that of those who are tied with them by blood or by common interests.
When a person has done something to the discredit of one's own image and reputation, it will surely involve
others related to him in one way or another. Among those inflicted most hy what folly (愚蠢) he may have
done are those who, to him, have been close in relations and dear in sentiment.
Additionally, whether one's act is wise or unwise, rather the summit of wisdom, depends on the result of
the act; if _____, then the more often he does it, the better will he be believed. While repeating that act, he is
not only earning himself an admirable image but also contributing to the fine impression and reputation of his
relatives, his friends, his hometown and his motherland.

As nanny (保姆), cook, cleaner, shopper, driver, and gardener, she has one of the most demanding jobs
in Britain today. And paying someone else to do the chores (家务活) which take the average housewife 71
hours a week would cost £349.
At over £18,000 a year that's more than the earnings of 70 percent of the population, including train
drivers, firemen, prison officers, and social worker. Looking after a baby less than a year old takes a housewife
into a even higher pay league. According to a stud, she earns £457 a week-at nearly £24,000 a year, the
same as teachers, engineers, and chemists.
Researchers put a price on each chore, then tried to find out how long the average person takes doing
them. They found housewives spend an average 70.7 hours a week on housework-with looking after the
children (17.9 hours) and cooking and cleaning (12.9 hours each) the most time-consuming (费时).
A wife with a part-time job still works and average of 59 hours a week at home. Those in full-time
employment put in longer hours at home than in the workplace. The good news is that these hours sharply as
children get older. While the average mother with child under one puts in 90 hours weekly, the figure drops to
80 hours from one to four and to 66 hours from five to ten.
Mother-of-four Karen Williams from London said, "Paying the housewives may not be practical, but the
government should recognize the value of housework, perhaps through the tax. Running a house takes a lot
of time and most husbands don't understand this. For example, my husband only puts a shelf up now and
again. He never cleans the kitchen-that's the real test."

"I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning and I surf the net."
"I often check my e-mail forty times a day."
"I often spend more than three hours during one time on the net."
"I spend more time in chat rooms than with my real-life friends."
Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction called Internet addiction. Internet
addicts spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. The use of the Internet can be an addiction like
drug use. People lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.
For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried, and they called
the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the net for several days straight.
Studies show that about 6% to 10% of Internet users become addicted. And people worry about the teens
because the Internet is changing the playing field for some of them. They spend more time in cyberspace than
in the real world of friends and family.
Is "surfing the net" a hobby or an addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have these symptoms:
     ● You do not go to important family activities or you do not do school work because you like to spend
hours on the Internet.
     ● You can't wait for your next online time. You plan to spend a short time online, but then you spend
several hours.
     ● You go out with your friends less and less.

A. Because the teens are wasting too much money.
B. Because they used to work on the Internet.
C. Because the playing field of the teens will disappear.
D. Because more and more of the teens will become addicted to the Internet.
4. The example in the passage shows that _____.
A. Internet problems are more serious among college students
B. Internet addicts usually stay in the computer lab without sleep
C. some of the Internet users have already been seriously addicted
D. the police often help to find those Internet addicts
5. What is the writer trying to tell us at the end of the passage?

Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, "But, Dad, you can't be healthy if
you're dead."
Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt-a
mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why.
There have been many myths (谬论) about safety belts ever since their first appearance m cars some
forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.
Myth Number One: It's best to be "thrown clear" of a serious accident.
Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to "throw you clear" is also going to be serious enough
to give you a very bad landing. And chances are that you'll have traveled through a wind-shield (挡风玻璃)
or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in
cases where people are "thrown clear".
Myth Number Two: Safety belts "trap" people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.
Truth: Sorry again but studies show that people knocked unconscious (昏迷) due to not wearing safety
belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to
the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.
Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour.
Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield
with a force equal to diving head first into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

A. may be knocked down by other cars
B. may get seriously hurt being thrown out of the car
C. may find it impossible to get away from the seat
D. may get caught in the car door
4. Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt be- cause they believe _____.
A. the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident
B. they will be unable to think clearly in an accident
C. they will be caught when help comes
D. cars catch fire easily
5. What is the advice given in the text?
A. Never drive faster than 30 miles an hour.
B. Try your best to save yourself in a car accident.
C. Never forget to wear a safety belt while driving.
D. Drive slowly while you're not wearing a safety belt.

Allen goes everywhere with Brigitte Anderson, a 54-year-old secretary. He moves around her office at
work and goes shopping with her. "Most people don't seem to mind Allen," says Brigitte, who thinks he is
wonderful. "He is my fourth child," she says. She may think of him and treat him that way, buying his food,
paying his health bills and his taxes, but in fact Allen is a dog.
Brigitle and Allen live in Sweden, a country where everyone is expected to lead an orderly life according
to rules laid down by the government, which also provides a high level of care for its people. This level of
care costs money.
People in Sweden pay taxes on everything, so they aren't surprised to find that owning a dog means more
taxes. Some people are paying as much as 500 Sweden kronor (克朗) in taxes a year for the right to keep
their dogs, money that is spent by the government on dog hospitals and sometimes medical treatment for a
dog that falls ill. However, most such treatment is expensive, so owners often decide to pay health and even
life insurance (保险) for their dogs.
In Sweden dog owners must pay for any damage their dogs do. A Swedish kennel (宠物园) club official
explains what this means: if your dog runs out on the road and gets hit by a passing car, you, as the owner,
have to pay for any damage done to the car, even if your dog has been killed in the accident.

[     ]

D. he often falls ill
2. The money paid as dog taxes is used to _____.

The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was
7:30 pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.
By 9:45 pm, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless.
Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some
food was about to appear. By 11:00 pm, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads.
Jane and David left hungry and angry.
Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads
and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30-8:30 pm means drinks only, go
out to dinner afterwards: 8:00 pm or 8:30 pm means possible dinner, but 9:30 pm and any time thereafter means
no food, eat beforehand, to up late.
But this is not always that case. If asked to a students' party at 6:30 pm, it is normal for guests not to appear
before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive-looking eager-is social death. When my
mother is asked to a party for 6:30 pm, she likes to be there, if not on time, then no later than seven. My age
group (late thirties) fall somewhere between the two, but because we still think we're young, we're probably
closer to student-time than grownup time.
The accepted custom at present is confusing (混乱的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may
go home, but it does lend every part that precious element (成分) of surprise.
1. The underlined words "off their heads" probably mean _____.
[     ]
A. tired
B. crazy
C. curious
D. hopeless
2. Jane and David's story is used to show that _____.
[     ]
A. party-goers usually get hungry at parties
B. party invitations can be confusing
C. people should ask for food at parties
D. birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull
3. For some young people, arriving on time for a students' party will probably be considered _____.
[     ]
A. very difficult
B. particularly thoughtful
C. friendly and polite
D. socially unacceptable

A lonely and sad pug (哈巴狗) was photographed as
he waited for his owner by the side of the road has been
considered as the world's saddest dog. Pictures of the pet
taken by a passer-by have become an internet focus after
being posted on the photo-sharing website Flickr.
The dog which is nicknamed Mr. Newman looks
terribly upset as he sits on the pavement tied to a lamp-
post with a rope.
The photograph was taken outside a cafe in the Californian city of San Francisco, which may go some way
to explaining why he is dressed in a stylish grey and purple sweater.
"He was hanging around looking for somebody to love him I tried to cheer him up-he seemed happy to see
me," said the photographer Chris Michael.
One of the four photos of the pug on Flickr is titled "Tough day for Mr. Newman" and with some other
words as follows:"Despite his cool clothes, the girls just aren't interested in him any more."
Dozens of people on the site said they had been touched by the dog's pitiful expressions. "I come back to see
this photo every now and then because it's too cute, so does my daughter. In fact, my family all are touched,"
wrote one of the pedestrians who had seen the photo. Another viewer said that she had been so moved as to buy
a pug of her own after seeing the photos.
