The organizationfounded to link Western Europe and the United States together in a common defense against the Soviet Union and its Eastern European allies (结盟) is called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO.

Meanwhile the United States, Great Britain, and France had greatly reduced their military strength in Europe after the war’s end.A general sense of weakness spread through Western Europe after 1945.Some countries in Eastern Europe were greatly influenced by the Soviet Union.Increasing concern in Western Europe and the United States led to plans for assistance.
On April 4,1949, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington, D.C.. The original 12 signatories (签约国) were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.Greece and Turkey joined in 1952, West Germany in 1955, and Spain in 1982.France withdrew (退出) from the military command of NATO in 1966 but remained a member of the organization.Recently, three former members from the Warsaw Pact (华沙条约), Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, joined up and brought NATO’s membership to 19.
The current NATO secretary is Dr.Javier Solana.The committee’ s headquarters (总部) are in Brussels.
