The long running argument between Australians and New Zealanders regarding the advantages of their different accent has restarted in China over English language courses.
Despite the popularity of a radio Australia English course in some parts of the country, Chinese broadcasting officials said that some New Zealanders were trying to damage Australian language because of Australia accent. A New Zealander Embassy official in Beijing said there had never been any official talks about this matter. But the local broadcasting officials said the New Zealand language teachers in China were saying New Zealand accent was closer than the Australia accent to proper spoken English.
A spokesperson from the Australian Embassy said the Chinese had given them information that they actually like English courses conducted by Australians because the accent was “not too British nor too American”.
John Crone, head of radio Australia's North Asia Department which put together the recent English from Australia course that got big success in Henan Province, China, said he knew about the current accent debate. “We do get remarks from the Chinese regarding the advantages of English from the United Kingdom, United States and other places,” he said.
“Accent are important and the Chinese can find the Australia accent difficult if they have not been exposed to it before. We also notice the New Zealand efforts in short wave radio English courses and there's certainly a place for them, but Australia is a bigger country with more resources and can do more than New Zealand. What we are hoping to so is to get the Chinese used to the way we talk, because in the end what's important is not how they say things, but that they can fully understand different accents.”
Radio Australia's English from Australia course was broadcast for nine months from May last year on Henan provincial radio, which may have listeners reaching or close to 100 million. Listeners to the course were estimated at 30,000, made up of high school and university students, scientists and, technicians and simply lovers of the English language, including some prisoners. Although the twice-daily course finished in January this year, its strong effort was put to the high level by a follow-up contest.
