My husband hasn’t  stopped laughing about the thing that happened to me.It’s  36  now but it wasn’t  at that time.Last Friday,  37  doing all the family shopping in town,I  38  a rest before catching the train.so I bought a  39  and some chocolate and went to the station coffee shop―that cheap,serf-service place with long  40  to sit at.I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to  41  a place.and went to get a cup of coffee.

When I came back with t11e coffee.there was someone in the  42  seat.It was one of those wild―looking young men, with dark glasses and torn clothes, and hair colored bright  43  at the front.

Not so unusual these days. What did  44  me was he’d started to eat my chocolate !

Naturally.I was annoyed. However, to avoid trouble一 45  really I was rather uneasy about him―I just  46  down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee, and took a bit of chocolate. The boy 1ooked at me  47  .Then he took a second piece of my chocolate.I could hardly 48 it.

Still I didn’t  dare to start an argument. When he took a  49  piece.I felt more  angry than   50  .I thought,“Well,I shall have the last piece。”and I got it.

The boy gave me a  51  look.and then stood up.As he left he shouted out.“This woman’s mad!”Everyone  52  .That was embarrassing enough.but it was  53  when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave.

My face went red―as red as his hair when I  54  I'd made a mistake. It wasn’t   my chocolate he’d been taking. There was mine,  55  ,just under my newspaper.

Sorry to say, our brains naturally start slowing down at the cruelly young age of 30. it used to be thought that this couldn’t be helped, but new studies show that people of any age can train their brains to work faster . “Your brain is a learning machine,” says University of California scientist Dr. Micha3el Merzenich. Given the right tools, we can train our brains to act like they did when we were younger. All that’s required is the practice designed just for the purpose: a few exercises for the mind.

Merzenich has developed a computer-based training method to speed up the process(过程) in which the brain deals with information (positence. com). Since much of the data we receive comes through speech, the Brain Fitness Program works with language and hearing to better speed and accuracy(准确性).

Over the course of training, the program starts asking you to distinguish (辨别) sounds (between “dog” and “dog”, for example) at an increasingly faster speed. It’s a bit like tennis instructor, says Merzenich, hitting balls at you faster and faster to keep you challenged (受到挑战). You may start out slow, but before long you’re pretty quick.

The biggest finding in brain research in the last ten years is that the brain at any age is highly plastic. If you ask your brain to learn, it will learn. And it may even speed up while in the process.

To keep your brain young and plastic you can do one of a million new activities that challenge and excite you: playing table tennis or bridge, doing crossword puzzles, learning a language....“When it comes to preventing ageing, you really do ‘use it or lose it”, says Barbara Sahakian, professor at Cambridge University.
