The nose is used in many popular expressions. Some people are able to lead other people by the nose. For example, if a wife leads her husband by the nose, she makes him do whatever she wants him to do. Some people are said to be hard-nosed. They will not change their opinions or positions on anything.
It is always helpful when people keep their nose out of other people’s business. They do not interfere (干涉). The opposite of this is someone who noses around all the time. Such people are interested in other people’s private matters. They’re considered nosy. Someone who keeps his nose to the grindstone (磨石) works very hard. This can help a worker keep his nose clean or stay out of trouble.
One unusual expression is that is no skin off my nose. This means that a situation doesn’t affect or concern me. We also say that sometimes a person cuts off his nose to spite his face. That is, he makes a situation bad for himself by doing something foolish because he is angry.
More problems can develop if a person looks down his nose at someone or something. The person acts as if something is unimportant or worthless. This person might also turn up his nose at something that he considers not good enough. This person thinks he is better than everyone else. He has his nose in the air.
In school, some students thumb their nose at their teacher. They refuse to obey orders or do any work. Maybe the students do not know the correct answers. My mother always told me when I was a student, “If you study hard, the answers should be right under your nose or easily seen.”

Tomorrow was his girlfriend’s birthday and the young man was having a difficult time deciding on a present for her. She already had more clothes than she knew what to do with them, so he couldn’t get any kind of apparel. She never ate sweets, so candy was out of the question. What then? He had a very special reason for wanting to impress her with just the right gift; tomorrow he was going to make an offer of marriage to her.
He finally decided on perfume(香水). All girls liked perfume. That raised another problem, however. What kind did she prefer? He couldn’t ask her because that would ruin the surprise.
At last the young man hit upon a brilliant idea. That afternoon, pretending to take his girlfriend’s fox terrier, a little dog for a walk, the young man and the dog went directly to the perfume counter of the town’s biggest department store. Good! There was a large array (长列) of perfume. He beckoned(招呼) a clerk, instructing her to open a large number of bottles and wave the stoppers under the dog’s nose.
Nestled in the young man’s arms, the terrier began to be restless and bored as this seemingly pointless game went on. Then Fritz suddenly became frisky, wiggling in the young man’s arms and barking excitedly, as the clerk waved one stopper under its nose.
“I’ll take that one,” said the young man to the clerk. The price was high, but it was worth it, he thought.
“My favorite perfume!” said the delighted girl the next evening as she unwrapped the package. “How did you know?” she asked, dabbing some perfume behind each ear.
“Intuition(直觉), I guess.” said the young man, deciding that it wasn’t exactly wrong to tell a lie under the circumstances. One day, after they were married, he would admit that his intuition had really been a little dog named Fritz.

Snowboarding（滑板滑雪） became a Winter Olympic event in 1998 but many people still don’t think it’s a “real” sport. I asked ten of my friends about this and eight of them said it shouldn’t be an Olympic event. Snowboarders must be skilful and strong, just like other athletes(运动员), and they train just as hard. So, why do people have this opinion?
Well, I think there are a few reasons. First of all, snowboarders believe that having fun is part of the sport. Maybe people think they’re enjoying themselves too much. I guess they feel that “real” sports should look like hard work. Secondly, snowboarders believe it’s of importance to show their personal style. They like to be dressed in modern clothes and often have interesting haircuts. In some people’s eyes, a well-trained athlete just doesn’t wear a funny hat or a nose-ring. Thirdly, it’s a new sport and many people haven’t tried it yet. This might make them think it’s easy, when, in fact, it’s not. Snowboarding is just as difficult, if not more difficult, than skiing.
Whatever the reasons, I think it’s time we accept that having fun doesn’t mean you’re lazy and that someone with blue hair can be a champion(冠军).
