¡¡¡¡New York, London, Paris and other big cities are exciting places 1 .There are many interesting things to see and to do. You can go to 2 kinds of museums, plays and films. You can also go shopping to 3 things from all over the world.

¡¡¡¡But there are serious problems in big cities, 4 .The cost of living is 5 ,and there are too many people in some places of the big cities. Every year many people move to the cities because they can 6 find work there, to study at good schools, and to receive good medical care (Ò½ÁƱ£½¡). But 7 these people cannot find work or a good place to live in. Also, too many people in a small 8 make it hard to keep the cities 9 and clean.

¡¡¡¡Some people enjoy living in big cities, others do not. 10 people move to a big city, they should think about the problems of living there.

The western world has always been divided into two types of people¡ªthe cool and the uncool. It is a division that  1   in school. The cool kids are good at   2  .They are   3   with the opposite sex¤ª and are good-looking and people want to   4   their style. They can do their homework but they don¡¯t make a big effort. That would   5   be cool.

The uncool kids are in the other corner of the playground. They are very bright, but they don¡¯t have great  6  skills and they are   7  at sports. When they are not programming computers or doing calculus£¨Î¢»ý·Ö£©in their heads, they are reading comic books and watching shows like the ¡°X Files¡±. They are   8   as the geeks (×öµÍ¼¶»¬»ü±íÑݵÄÈË).

Here¡¯s the news. The geeks are   9   . Make friends with them now or they will put virus in your computer and  10   your math homework to ruin. Geeks might not be popular at school, yet they do pass their examinations, and they might not be too popular at university, but   11   good degrees.

The most important  12   of the 21st century, computers and IT, has been at least partly created by geeks. Geek heroes like Bill Gates  13   others to follow their example. Being a geek is a way of earning good money. And the creation of the Internet gave them a  14   of their own to work and play in, making them a global   15  .Besides, the effect of the geeks   16   popular culture has started a new trend£¨Ç÷ÊÆ£©. It is now cool to be   17  .Geek culture is becoming an important part of general popular culture, in which what you know is more important than  18   you look like.

But there are also  19  .Geeks were often bullied or laughed at in school. Now a geek may be your boss. Perhaps it is time for   20  .

Many children may be fond of animals, but few ever think of making the study of animals their career(Ö°Òµ).Even fewer will be   1    by the whole world,   2    the title of United Nations Messenger(ʹÕß) of Peace.

But one woman has    3    all that. She has lived with chimpanzees in the African forest for more than 20 years and made great    4   .This woman is Jane Goodall. She was born in London, England, in 1934.Goodall¡¯s lifelong    5    in animals began at an early age. By the age of 10 or 11,Goodall    6    going to Africa to live with animals. This was quite a strange dream in those days, as young    7    didn¡¯t think of having such ¡°wild¡± actions. But she was   8    by her mother. She told her that if she really wanted something, she should work hard, take advantage of   9   and never give up looking for a way.

When a close friend invited Goodall to Kenya in 1957,she readily   10   .Within a few months of her arrival she met the famous anthropologist(ÈËÀàѧ¼Ò) Dr. Louis Leakey, who soon decided that Goodall was the    11    person he was looking for to begin a    12    of wild chimpanzees on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania.

In July 1960, Goodall arrived at Gombe National Park in Tanzania. At the beginning, studying the chimpanzees was not    13   for her. The animals fled from her   14   , so it took months for her to get close to them. With a strong   15   , she searched the forest every day, trying not to get too close to the chimpanzees too   16   . Gradually the chimpanzees became used to her presence.

She discovered many things of chimpanzees during her first years at Gombe National Park. In October 1960,she observed a chimpanzee making and using   17    to fish for termites (°×ÒÏ).This discovery threw    18    on the popular idea at the time that Man was the world¡¯s only toolmaker. The longer Goodall¡¯s research continues, the more it becomes obvious that chimpanzees are very   19    to humans.

Since the mid-1980s, Goodall has been lecturing around the world to raise people¡¯s sense about environmental    20   . ¡°Let¡¯s live in the new age with hope, respect for all living things, understanding and love,¡± she said.

This was one of my experiences    1   .When I was in my 30s,I was working for a large international company which had its head office in London. I was working in the   2   department.

The company had a training center which was just outside London. Different courses were held there throughout    3    and I    4    go on one training course a year. These usually started    5    a Sunday evening and lasted six days.

Once I was    6    a week¡¯s training course with about forty    7    sales people. I was in the bar on the Friday evening and suddenly a woman who was    8    behind the bar asked me a curious question.¡°I hope you don¡¯t    9   my asking,¡± she said, ¡°but I¡¯ve been     10    about it all week. Have you got a sister ¡¡¡¡11     Mary?¡± The woman¡¯s name was June. And she used to do various jobs at the training center¡¯s worked in the office, she organized all the food and drink for the center and she worked in the bar at lunch time and in the evening.

My answer    12    June¡¯s question was ¡°Yes¡±,and June said,¡°I thought    13   .I met her last September when she was organizing a course here.¡± At that time, my sister was working for   14    company but in a different part of the country. That was    15    she came to be at the training center.
16    surprised me was how June guessed we were brother and sister. Three things made it even more ¡¡¡¡17    .First, she had met my sister six months before she met me. Second, they have about sixty new people every week at the training center¡¯s about one thousand five hundred people had    18    the center in those six months. And    19   ,my sister is married, so she doesn¡¯t have the same family name as me.

We¡¯re not    20    ,but I guess we must look quite like each other.
