【原文】

W: I heard a new museum opens today in the other end of town. I want to visit it. Will you go with me?

M: OK. Let’s take a streetcar here.

W: So why are you interested in going by streetcar?

M: Well, because it always keeps moving, even when there’s heavy traffic. So at least we’ll get there quite quickly.

W: I think I’d rather go by underground, really.

M: I don’t fancy that. For one thing, it’s summer, so it’s going to be really hot down there. And for another, it gets too crowded.

W: So what about going on the bus, then? I know it’s slow, but it’s cheap.

M: Actually, what I’d most like to do is sail down the river.

W: That’s a good idea. We can ride to the harbor on our bikes, put them on the boat and be in the other end of town in half an hour.

M: Right, that’s sorted, then!

【题目】 The boy sat on his chair, with his hands above the keyboard. He thought about what to write.

He recalled that the competition deadline was merely a week away. But he still had not even started on his piece. He looked at the brochure again.“WRITING COMPETITION” the title read. His mom had encouraged him to enter the writing competition, and now he was taking it on as his personal task for the holidays.

As the boy reflected on his previous writing efforts, he realized how hopeless his task of winning was. Every story he ever wrote was based on other stories. He had little imagination, and unfortunately, imagination was the key to writing.

Suddenly, he had a brainwave. This time, he came up with an original and imaginative story.

The words shot towards him like a storm of leaves. Words were coming easily, flowing through him, faster than he could type. He typed faster than he ever had before. He continued to type, amazed how easy writing this story was. The boy could not stop writing. He looked at the word count and saw the number “248” staring right back at him. He was not even halfway yet.

Then he heard his mother’s call of saying time for bed. He continued writing the piece, ignoring her. He had to make up for the time he had lost in thinking about a topic to write.

Finally, he finished. The word count now read “498”.

“Perfect” he thought, “just under the word limit.” He knew this was the story that would win.

He went to the website and searched for the competition. He found the page but there was no “Enter” button.

Confused, he then reread the page again. It read COMPETITION CLOSED.

【题目】 A lot of kids struggle with reading. Parents have tried encouraging them in all sorts of ways, but nothing seems to work. Actually many factors(因素)can cause reading problems.1 Here are a few things you can do to help your kid become a better reader.

Read to your kid-and have him/her read to you

Grab one of the books you loved when you were your kid's age and read it to him/her or take turns reading it to each other. 2 Make reading a regular part of the night-time routine.

Don't be pushy

Just because you're a science fan or read on history and other nonfiction doesn't mean your kid will be remotely interested in any of those things. In fact, you've been pushing your tastes on your kid. 3

Choose books that interest your kid

Most kids love movies. Did your kid like Ready Player One or Ender's Game? They are based on books. 4 If your goal is to get your kid interested in reading and improve his/her skills, what your kid's reading is less important than how much time he/she spends doing it.

5

Kids who have trouble reading often feel that there's something wrong with them. So work with your kid to come up with manageable goals and make a big deal every time he/she accomplishes one. With time, gradually make the goals more challenging.

A.Achieve your goals

B.Celebrate small steps

C.Reading books can help your kid get a head start in school.

D.If your kid stops or makes a mistake, be patient and don't judge.

E.Overcoming them can sometimes be an annoying process for everyone.

F.Starting with something your kid is already interested in could help draw him into reading.

G.You may have contributed to his/her reading problems rather than helping overcoming them.
