When the heat of summer makes dogs miserable, many pet owners shave or clip their long coated dogs.

Dogs do not have the vast network of blood vessels(血管) and sweat glands(汗腺)in their skin as humans do, so they ________ as humans do. Panting (喘息) is their main system of cooling. As air passes quickly across the tongue and through the respiratory tract, the dog’s body loses heat. Their method of cooling is not as efficient as the human perspiration system and causes them to be more prone to heat stroke (中暑) than humans. Dogs can vaporize large amounts of water in hot weather and must always have plenty of fresh, cool water available, to avoid dehydration(脱水).

During the lazy days of summer, we usually find ourselves spending more time outdoors and often the dog is right alongside us. Clipping a heavy coated dog down to a short coat in summer can prevent leaves and grasses from being caught in the hair. A clipped coat is easier for dog owners to manage and it also makes them look good. They are happier for not being trapped in a fur coat. But a short coat must be still long enough to act as a “shade” for the skin and actually helps to prevent sunburn. Many vets will disagree with a shave and recommend a short clip instead. Leave at least one inch of hair when clipping dogs and a short clip done by a professional person will be most effective in achieving the proper length.

Dark coated dogs, heavy coated dogs, older dogs, and young puppies are among those at higher risk of heat stroke and require extra care to stay cool and avoid dehydration. Air conditioning during the hottest part of the day is best for these dogs; however, a clipped coat, regular brushing and plenty of cool, fresh water and shade can help keep dogs cool.

Open Your Eyes And Let's See Who You Are

Inventors have developed a new way to identify people, using a machine that scans their eyeballs.Developed by eyes scan, this new technology takes advantage of the fact that the iris(虹膜)of each person's eye is unique, and remains unchanged throughout a lifetime.

The process will replace ________called retina(视网膜)identification, which compared the pattern of veins(静脉)in the back of the eye.Used to control access to nuclear weapons, retina identification has never caught on with the public because it requires the user to put their eyeball right up against a lens.Iris scanning, on the other hand, works from a distance.

The iris of the eye is photographed from up to one meter away. The patterns of the iris are translated into digital code, and stored in a PC database, along with personal information.Glasses and contact lenses do not interfere with the scanning process, and it takes only a brief moment.

The new technology will be useful for banking and police work, as well as for the Internet economy. Before long, your computer monitor may be equipped with an iris scanner that can identify you when you shop online, thus preventing fraud.

There will be no ID cards to carry in your pocket, and no long numbers to memorize. And eyes will be very difficult to counterfeit.

Did you lose your ID card? No, you didn't.It's still right up there beside your nose.

Many students want to find friends on the Internet as a way of practising their language skills and learning more about new cultures. Traditional pen pals were the primary source for such contacts, and students could write each other letters. With the Internet, fingding friends has become much easier, and such relationships are called key pals.

However, care and consideration should be given when finding friends on the Internet:

◎Search the Internet for reputable(有信誉的) services. Look for reviews of such sites to learn more about other students’ experiences. Don’t join a service until you have done your research.

◎Check to see if you can use a nickname, instead of __________, to protect your identity.

◎Never give personal information to anyone, including your home address, phone number, and birthday.

◎Stop contact with others if you feel uncomfortable with the topics of conversation. Again, if you protect your identity, this will be easier to do. Tell your teachers, parents, or even local law enforement if problem arise.

Try to use the language you are studying in the classroom in your communication with others.

[1]Cooking carrots whole before chopping them up increases their anti-cancer properties by 25 percent, researchers say.

[2]Leaving the vegetable intact (完整的) prevents valuable nutrients from being easily washed away into water. They can then be chopped up once cooked without loss of nutrients.

[3]Carrots have long been prized for their health benefits, especially their vitamin and fiber content. They contain huge amounts of carotenoids(类胡萝卜素)which are converted into vitamin A in the body. They are also an excellent source of the anti-cancer compound falcarion (镰叶芹醇). In a previous study, Dr Kirsten Brandt found rats fed on a diet containing carrots or isolated falcarino were less likely to develop tumors than those which were not.

[4]They also found that carrots boiled before they were cut contained 25 percent more falcarino than those that were chopped up first. Carrots which are cut have a higher surface area in contact with water, resulting in greater loss of nutrients, compared with boiling them whole. The heat softens the cell walls in the vegetable, allowing vitamins and falcarino to leach (过滤)out.

[5]Dr Brandt said, "The great thing about this is that it's a simple way for people to increase their uptake of a compound, which is good for you. All you need is a bigger saucepan. Naturally occurring   sugars, responsible for giving the carrots its sweet flavor, were also found in higher concentration in carrots that had been cooked whole."

[6]The team also carried out a taste on almost 100 volunteers comparing carrots boiled before being cut and some that are cut up first. More than 80 percent of volunteers said that carrots cooked whole tasted much better.

[7]Boiling carrots whole appears to help them keep more of the nutrients. This is really a piece of good news because the method is of great value. Some other vegetables, such as parsnips (欧洲萝卜) which are from the same family and have a roughly similar size and texture can also be more nutritious by ____.
