Coyotes(丛林狼) used to live only in wide-open spaces of western prairies and deserts. They avoided forests, where wolves, their enemies, lived. But as forests were cleared to make room for farms and communities, coyotes started spreading east and west into they newly open territories.

Most coyotes are afraid  of people, so those living in cities have learned how to avoid being seen. Street-smart coyotes hunt for food between dusk and dawn, when few people are around. During the day, the animals rest in out-of-the-way spots. ”They ‘are trying to avoid people as best  as they can ,” says a scientist studying coyotes around Chicago, Illinois

City life suits coyotes in several ways. There are no enemies such as mountain lions ,wolves ,or hunters. City coyotes eat well, too. Parks yards and green spaces in cities provide habitat for a feast of favorite coyote foods ,including mice ,rats and  rabbits . Coyotes also eat lots of fruits , With plenty of natural food and no-predators (捕食性动物), coyotes in urban areas are healthier, live longer and raise larger families than their country cousins.

Unfortunately, some city coyotes lose their fear of humans. They find tasty garbage of pet food outside homes. They notice that people ignore them instead of chasing them away. Some humans even feed coyotes on purpose, thinking it’s an act of kindness. Actually, it’s a serious mistake.

Coyotes that become comfortable around people and learn to associate buildings and yards with food are the ones that get into trouble. Some coyotes attack pets in yards. Sometimes a coyote may even chase or bite in a human. An animal that behaves in these ways must be removed by wildlife officials.

It’s people that change coyotes’ behavior. But we’re also the ones who can help them be good neighbors. We can teach them by not providing food for them, and by making sure they know there are certain area they’re not allowed. Can coyotes and people live more safely together in cities?

The coyote (丛林狼), that clever animal of wide-open spaces, has come to the nation’s capital. In fact, coyotes have spread to every corner of the United States, changing their behaviors to fit new environments and causing researchers to deal with a troublesome new kind of creature: the city coyote.
The coyote originally lived in the middle of the continent. One of its most obvious characters is its smartness, which has made the animal a notorious (臭名昭著的) pest. Hunters trapped, shot and poisoned more than a million coyotes in the 1900s. It’s still one of America’s most hunted animals. Yet the coyote has survived. How has the coyote shown this extraordinary ability? “I guess if you wanted to use one word, it’d be ‘plasticity’,” says Eric Gese, an expert at Utah State University. Coyotes can live alone, in pairs, or in large packs like wolves; hunt at night or during the day; occupy a small region or an area up to 40 square miles; and live on all sorts of food, from lizards (蜥蜴) and shoes, to ants and melons.
Unbelievably people helped coyotes increase when they killed most of the wolves in the United States. The spreading of coyotes into city areas, though, is recent. They travel at night, crossing sidewalks and bridges, running along roads and ducking into culverts (钻入涵洞) and underpasses. No one knows why coyotes are moving into cities, but experts explain that cleverer, more human-tolerant (不怕人的) coyotes are teaching urban survival skills to new generations.
Occasionally, coyotes might attack human beings. There have been about 160 attacks on people in recent years. Therefore, people have been consistently told not to feed coyotes or leave pet food unsecured. That, plus a large trapping program in the neighborhood, has cut down on the coyote population.

B. sleep during the day but look for food at night
C. are teaching survival skills to their younger generations
D. suffered a population decrease because people killed wolves
66. According to the passage, to cut down the coyote population, people should ____________.

There was room for all of us, and sleeping bags kept the night chill away.We would listen to the
sound of the river, and hear the coyotes(丛林狼) howling along the hills not far away.
Those were the cool summer nights of the mid nineties in Southern Alberta, Canada, when the fou
r children were young and we would lie on the trampoline(蹦床) in the backyard late at night, for the
sun would not set till late in July and August. We would look at the stars up above. It was a simple
painting of little white dots on a black canvas, but we would never grow tired of looking at it.As our
eyes surveyed that starry wonder we would see streaks of lights as meteors(流星) hit the atmosphere
and burn up, or we would follow the meteors'steady path across the sky till it would also disappear.
These were the times when I would tell the stories of my own childhood and teach the kids life's
lessons that have been remembered to this day.I chuckle, as I recall the time when we heard a coyote
not far away, that I started a story about a bear sneaking (溜)up to the trampoline. The closer the bear
came (in the story )the closer the kids snuggled up to mom and I, until suddenly I let out this big daddy
growl and grabbed all the kids. They would startle and jump up and then all laugh, "Daddy, you scared
us!"
Now the children are in their mid and late teens, but they fondly remember the starry nights on that
trampoline.Recently my oldest daughter on her wedding day sang a song for her parents, entitled I'll
always be your little girl. She wrote the music and words;it included a memory of those starry nights.
I have learned as a parent that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children as they are growing
up is the time to tell them stories, or if telling stories is not that simple, perhaps read them a story. They
can read their own books and it will benefit them greatly academically, but telling or reading them a story
will create an inseparable bond(联系) with pleasant memories such as those late summer nights in the
starry sky.

The United States Department of Agriculture has a program called Wildlife Services. Its job is to help protect agricultural and other resources from threats and damage by wildlife. Often that means helping farmers deal with unwelcome visitors. This organization has experts from different fields and it has set up thousands of inquiry agencies all over the country where farmers can explain their difficulty and get practical help.

One example from Wildlife Services of its work involved a farmer in Washington State, in the Pacific Northwest. Several years ago, thousands of Canada geese landed on his fields. The geese began to eat his carrot crop. Biologists from the program suggested that the farmer use noise-making devices and other measures to scare the large birds away. These efforts apparently succeeded, which made the farmer quite happy.

Wildlife Services also has a livestock(牲畜) protection program. The program just offers suggestions to keep those unwelcome visitors away instead of killing them. The Wildlife Services program is part of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, or APHIS. APHIS offers some suggestions of ways to keep away predators (食肉动物).For example, try to keep food and water safe from wildlife. Fences may help keep out coyotes(丛林狼), especially if the fences are at least two meters high. For best results, the bottom of the fence should extend about fifteen centimeters into the ground.

Experts suggest providing secure shelter for chickens, sheep and other animals that could be attacked. The experts also suggest using lights above places where animals are kept. And they advise people who see coyotes around their property to chase them away by shouting, making loud noises or throwing rocks. For home gardeners, a two-meter fence might help keep out deer. To keep out rabbits, a wire fence has to be only about a half-meter high. It should extend fifteen centimeters underground to keep rabbits from digging under it. If snakes are a problem, remove dead trees and cut high grass to destroy their hiding places. And to protect livestock, consider using guard animals such as dogs and donkeys, which are very effective. Due to its effective work, ever since the Wildlife Services was started, it has been well received by farmers all over the States and neighboring countries such as Canada and Mexico.

53. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that ____.

A. the farmer didn’t have a gun to kill those Canada geese

B. Wildlife Services involves some biologists in its group

C. the cabbage crop was eaten up by the Canada geese

D. the farmers like to eat Canada geese very much

54. What is mainly discussed in the last two paragraphs?

A. Ways to protect livestock.               B. Ways to deal with coyotes.

C. How to protect crops.                   D. How to find wildlife.

55. The bottom of the fence should extend about 15 centimeters into the ground because ____.

A. coyotes can climb over it easily           B. the strong wind might blow it away

C. snakes can cross it from under the ground   D. rabbits may enter by digging holes under it
