　　Proverbs(谚语)are quite common in spoken English．We don't normally put them in a composition or a letter．Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean．Here are a few examples．

　　6)“He is sitting on the fence” means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against it．He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win．

　　7)“He who pays the piper calls the tune．” A piper is a musician．The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play．Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan, he can say how it will be carried out．

　　8)“You can't get blood out of a stone” means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want．e．g．you cannot get a million dollars from a poor man．

Last year college students in America spent an estimated $700 on textbooks on average. The National Association of College Stores reported more than five billion dollars in sales of textbooks and course materials.

The association spokesman Charles Schmidt says electronic textbooks now just make up 2%～3% of sales. But he says that is expected to reach 10%～15% by 2012.

Online versions(版本) are now available for many of the most popular college textbooks. An e­textbook can cost half the price of a new print textbook. But students usually lose access to them after the end of the term. And the books cannot be placed on more than one device(设备)，so they are not easy to share.

So what do students think of e­textbooks？Administrators at Northwest Missouri State University wanted to find it out. Earlier this year they tested them with 500 students in 20 classes.

The university is unusual. It provides laptop computers for all 7,000 of its full­time students. It does not require students to buy their textbooks either. They rent them to save money. The school aims to save even more by moving to e­textbooks.

The students in the survey reported that downloading the books from the Internet was easy. They liked the idea of carrying lighter backpacks. And 56% said they were better able to find information.

But most found that using e­textbooks did not change their study habits. And 60% felt they read more when they were reading on paper. In all，almost half the students said they still liked physical textbooks better.

But the survey found that cost could be a big influence.55% said they would choose e­textbooks if using them meant their textbook rental fee would not increase.

Roger Von Holzen heads the Center for Information Technology in Education at Northwest Missouri State University. He tells us that administrators are disappointed with the e­textbooks now available because the majority are not interactive(交互式的)．

He thinks growth will come when more digital books include video，activities，games and other ways to interact with the information. The technology is improving. But for now，most of the books are just words on a screen.

Confidence：you’ve either got it or you haven’t, right? Wrong．Most people learn confidence as they go through life．

Even if you are shaking like a leaf on the inside, you’ll make a lasting impression if you can come across as confident．Here are some confidence-building tips：

Fake(伪造) it! If you can pretend that       when you don’t and keep on doing so, your fake confidence will soon turn into real confidence．It only takes a few repetitions of an activity for it to become a habit—so get in the habit of faking self-belief．

Think it．For an instant encouragement to yourself-esteem(自尊心), recall three things that give you positive emotions．It could be a great compliment(称赞)somebody paid you, a special time when you felt happy and popular, or when you really excelled(超过别人)at something．Bring them to mind will help you to feel good instantly—and when you feel good, you have greater confidence．

Focus it．Difficult situations, such as interviews or new jobs, can make you feel shy．If you're feeling anxious about yourself, stop thinking about you and focus on something else．It could be that you focus on something normal, like the view out of the window, or that you pay more attention to the task at hand—getting the job! Either way, you’ll feel less awkward．

Talk it．If you keep telling yourself that you’re no good at something, you’ll start to believe it．Next time you blame yourself, ask yourself whether you’d talk to your friends like that：So quit being negative and start recognizing and appreciating the things you are good at．

Walk it．Great posture(姿势) can signal great confidence．Walk with a purposeful stride(大踏步), walk with your back straight and with your head held up high!

German researchers said older people tend to be portrayed negatively in society. Although they are often described as wise, they are also shown as being slow and forgetful.

“Living in a youth centered culture, they may appreciate a boost in self­esteem.That's why they prefer the negative stories about younger people, who are seen as having a higher status in our society，” said Dr Silvia Knobloch­Westerwick，of Ohio State University.

Knobloch­Westerwick and her co­author Matthias Hastall, of Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, Germany, studied 276 German adults, including 178 aged 18 to 30 and 98 between 55 and 60. Their findings are published in the journal Communication.

All the adults in the study were shown what they were led to believe was a test version of a new online news magazine.They were also given limited time to look over either a negative or a positive version of 10 pre­selected articles.

Each story was also paired with a photograph depicting(描绘) someone of either the younger or the older age group.

The researchers found that older people were more likely to choose to read negative articles about those younger than themselves. They also tended to show less interest in articles about older people, whether negative or positive.

But younger people preferred to read positive articles about other young people.

According to Knobloch­Westerwick, older people's preference for negative news about their younger counterparts can be explained by their place in society.

“Everybody likes a self­esteem boost. For young people, though, it's almost automatic. Youth is considered important in society，” she said.

After reading the articles, the participants completed a questionnaire designed to measure levels of self­esteem. Unlike their younger counterparts, the self­esteem of older people rose after they read a negative article about younger people.

Although the study was done in Germany, Knobloch­Westerwick believes nationality and the national characteristics are not important.
