[1]One of many important things for the whole family to do is to have dinner together. Researchers
began reporting the benefits of family dinner about a decade ago, focusing mainly on how it affects children.
Studies show that those families who eat dinner at least 3 or 4 times a week together, benefit in many ways.
[2]Eating together helps families achieve open communication and build stronger and healthier relationships. Children have better grades at school and are better adjusted as teens and adults, and the entire family enjoys
healthier nutrition. For many families, eating dinner together proves to be a good and effective way to reduce
the risk of youth rates of addiction, and helps to raise healthier children. It is also a great time to share the
events of the day, discuss news and ideas or just be together and enjoy each other's company.
[3]During dinner time parents have better opportunity to show that they are the prior to their children.
Sitting at the same table and sharing meals is where and when parents can find out more about their children's
school performance, daily activities and attitudes toward life. When parents have all this information they can
better direct their kids toward positive things in life. They also have better chance to reduce the possibility that
children will get involved with alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs.

[4]However, family researchers say that the benefits of family dinner by no means can be considered as
automatic. Parents can sit down to dinner with their kids every day and achieve nothing. __________________

As a music teacher, I have always known that music touches the soul. It can   1    all kinds of
barriers to reach students in a very special way. It can be the   2    for each child to find their light. I
would like to    3    a story about it.
For a few years I was   4    with the opportunity to teach disabled students. One of my most    5
students was a five-year-old girl called Vanessa, who had difficulty walking, and could not speak.
We   6      sat on the floor for our music lessons and Vanessa liked to    7     on my lap(膝上). One of
her favorite songs was "John the Rabbit. " It was a call and response song where I sang the call and the
students     8   twice while singing the repeating phrase, "Oh, yes! " Vanessa liked to    9    her hands
together with mine and clap with me. We probably performed that song during every class, Vanessa
and I clapping together. But she   10     said or sang a word.
One day, when the song was finished, Vanessa turned around,   11     me in the eye, clapped her
tiny hands twice and said the words " Oh, yes 1" I opened my mouth in    12     and for that moment I
was the one who could not speak. When my heart    13     started beating again, I looked over at the
assistant teacher to find her also    14     Through music, we had made an awesome connection.
Several years later, I met Vanessa on the street in town. She waved with a big     15     on her face
and then clapped her hands twice, imitating the song we had     16    so many times in our music class.
The little girl,   17     her connection with music, left an impression on me that will last forever. Every
child has the    18    to learn and grow. It is up to us to   19     the way to reach each and every one
of our students. We all must find each child's   20     .

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence
and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these
experiences.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which help people forget bad memories.
The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or
possibly erase the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing
chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far, the research has suggested that only the emotional effects
of meomories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after wars.
They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories. "Some memories can ruin people's
lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually
come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry (精神病学) at Harvard
Medical School. "This could relieve( 减轻) a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories
give us our identity. They also help us avoid the mistakes in the past. "All of us can think of bad events in our
lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I am not sure we'd want to wipe those memories
out." said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, painfree life equals happiness actually
reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to
happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more
often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness.
They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional
achievement, religious commitment, self-improvement.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less
satisfying. lf he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For
commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement.
Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's s1eep or three-day vacation.
I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But
couples who decide not to have children ever know the joys of watching a child grow up
or of playing with a grandchild.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the
most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that
can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy
clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems point1ess. And it liberates
us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually
may not be happy at all.

1. According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because.
A. he is reluctant to take on family responsibilities
B. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single
C. he finds more fun in dating than in marriage
D. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement
2. Raising children, in the author's opinion, is.
A. a moral duty
B. a thankless job
C. a rewarding task
D. a source of inevitable pain
3. From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems form -.
A. hatred
B. misunderstanding
C. prejudice
D. ignorance
4. To understand what true happiness in, one must______.
A. have as much fun as possible during one's 1ifetime.
B. make every effort to liberate oneself from pain
C. put up with pain under all circumstances
D. be able to distinguish happiness from fun
5. What is the author trying to tell us?
A. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.
B. One must know how to attain happiness.
C. It is important to make commitments.
D. It is pain that leads to happiness.

When I was an education official in Palo Alto,California,Polly Tyner, the president of
our school board, wrote a letter that was printed in the Palo Alto Times.Polly's son,Jim,
had great difficulty in school. He was classified as educationally disabled and required a
great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid
with a great smile that lit up the room. His parents acknowledged his academic difficulties,
but always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride.Shortly after
Jim finished high school,he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother
submitted this letter to the newspaper.

Today we buried our 20-year-old son.He was killed instantly in a motorcycle
accident on Friday night. How I wish I had known when I talked to him last that it would be
the last time.If I had only known I would have said,"Jim,I love you and I'm very proud of you."
I would have taken the time to count the many blessings he brought to the lives of the
many who loved him.I would have taken time to appreciate his beautiful smile, the sound
of his laughter, his genuine love of people.
When you put all the good qualities on the scale and you try to balance all the irritating
phenomena such as the radio which was always too loud, the haircut that wasn't to our liking,
the dirty socks under the bed, etc.,your angry feelings won't amount to much.
I won't get another chance to tell my son all I would have wanted him to hear, but, other
parents, you do have a chance.Tell your young people what you would want them to hear
if you knew it would be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the day he
died.He called me to say,"Hi,Mom! I just called to say I love you.Got to go to work.Bye."
He gave me something to treasure forever.
If there is any purpose at all to Jim's death, maybe it is to make others appreciate more
