　　Before he turned to the historical novel,Walter Scott wrote poems,most of which were based on love and fighting. But soon he discovered that he could not write poems as good as Byron's,and so he turned away from it;but as a historical novelist,he seemed to be the best of his time. He read the older novelists,and himself began to write his first novel Waverley in 1805． It appeared in 1814 and for the next eighteen years Scott wrote novel after novel. In 1826 he lost all his money through the business failure of his publisher and printer. He owed $100,000,but refused the money with which his friends offered to help him. He sat down to pay the huge debt by writing,but died before he could do so. However,his books brought in enough money after his death to pay the last pound．

　　The modern world is very different from Scott's world．It does not admire glory(光荣) in battle as much as the men of Scott's day,partly because there are so many other dangerous events to remember. Space travel is more exciting to us than fighting with swords. 　　These kilts had colorful stripes (条纹) going up and down and across. In the 1700s and early 1800s, the color of the stripes had no special meaning. Men sometimes owned kilts in several different colors. But later the colors became important to the Scottish families. By about 1850, most families had special colors for their kilts. For example, men from the Campbell family had kilts with green, yellow and blue stripes. Scottish people often believe that the colors of the kilts are part of their family history. In fact, each family just chose the color they liked best.

　　Suppose we built a robot(机器人)to explore the planet Mars．We provide the robot with seeing detectors(探测器)to keep it away from danger．It is powered entirely by the sun．Should we program the robot to be equally active at all times?No．The robot would be using up energy at a time when it was not receiving any．So we would probably program it to stop its activity at night and to wake up at dawn the next morning．
