People who are worried about bad breath often reach for a toothbrush or a gun. But in the future, personal breath monitoring may include far more than fresh breath.

In face, breath is so rich in chemical compounds that fully understanding it has proved challenging. Each breath contains gases like carbon dioxide, the volatile(挥发性的)remains of recent snacks, medicines and even compounds taken in from things like carpeting or various kinds of air pollution. But breath detectors(检测器) can sort out these substances with increasing sensitivity(敏感性)。

Scientists are building electronic sniffers that examine the exhaled(呼气)air for signs of cancer, asthma(哮喘), and other diseases.

“There are clear signatures in the breath for liver(肝)disease, kidney(肾)disease and heart disease. Breath is a rich mixture that can reflect out state of health and disease.” said Dr. Raed Dweik, director of the Cleveland Clinic, adding “Breath analysis is the future of medical testing.”

He and his partners are testing a desktop system called BreathLink for use in rapid identification of diseases. The system is designed to work wherever there is an Internet connection. To use BreathLink, a person breathes into a long tube, and a breath sample is collected and analyzed within the system. Then it can detail chemical concentrations(浓度)of the breath in graphics. Dr. Raed Dweik said, “If you examine patients of asthma, you will find they have higher levels of nitric oxide(一氧化碳) in their exhaled air. It reflects their abnormal symptoms in the lungs.” His tests have reached 85 percent accuracy(精确度)so far in spotting people with some illness.

But some trained dogs, he pointed out, can sniff out cancer with 99 percent accuracy—although without the ability to identify particular compounds the way some detectors can.

“We are getting better and better,” he said. “But whether we will ever approach the accuracy of the dog—we don’t know.”

C Last year my summer holiday was spoiled by my bringing along a modern convenience that was too convenient for my own good: the iPad．Instead of looking at nature, I checked my e-mail．Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed（推特简讯）．Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning．I was behaving as if I were still in the office．My body was on vacation, but my head wasn’t．

Shake Shack is a new kind of restaurant becoming more popular in the U S．The restaurants are not“fast food．”They are known as“fast casual．”

Observers say Americans want more choices and fresh food when choosing where and what to eat．This trend is one reason why the fast food restaurant McDonald’s has struggled financially．In the last quarter of 2014，McDonald’s net income dropped by about$300 million．The January earnings report brought more bad news．Worldwide sales dropped for the eighth month in a row and even more than expected．While McDonald’s is struggling to get their customers back，Shake Shack，is doing well in making money．The New York-based burger chain had a very successful IPO，or initial public offering，of shares at the end of January．On its first day of trading，Shake Shack went from$21 a share to just under$46 a share．Being part of the“fast casual”trend has helped Shake Shack．Other fast casual restaurants in the U．S．include Chipotle and Panera．

Bonnie Riggs，a restaurant expert with NPD has studied Americans’restaurant habits for almost 30 years．She says one reason why Americans like fast casual food is that it’s new．It is creative，it is something different and people like to try new things．Her study shows Americans made 61 billion visits to restaurants last year．Three out of four visits were to fast food restaurants，like McDonald’s．Fast casual is still a small percentage of restaurant visits，but it has developed fast．Just as Ms．Riggs says，“It’s growing by leaps and bounds，because they meet consumers’needs．They know it's being prepared while they wait，it’s fresh，quality food，good tasting food at what they say are reasonable and affordable prices．”
