　　I was in arush as always, but this time it was for an?date I just corldn’t be late for!I found myself at a checkout counter behind ar?woman seeingly in no nuny as she paid for her groceries．A PhD student with not a lot of money, I had humied into the store to pick up some flowers．I was in a huge rush, thinking of my upconing evening．I did not want to be Late for this date．

　　We were in Boston, a place not always known for small conversation bitween strangers．The woman stopped unloading her basket and looked up at me．She smiled．It was a nice smile-warm and reasuring-and I retuned her gift by smiling back．

　　“Must be a special lady,” wboever it is that will be getting \those beautiful flowers．”she said．

　　“Yes, she’s speciao,” I said ,and then to my cnbarrassment ,the words kept coming out．“It‘s only our second dute, but somchow I am just having the feeling she’s‘the one，’”jokingly, I addcd,“The only problem is that I can’t figure out why she’d want to date a guy like me．”

　　“Well, I think she’s very lucky to have a boyfriend who buings her such lovely slowers and who is obviorsly in love with her,” the woman said．”My husband rscd to bring me flowers every week-even when tines were tough and we didn’t have much money．Those were incredible days; be was very romantic and-lf course- I miss him since he’s passed away．”

　　I paid for my flowers as se was gathering up her groceries．There was no doubt in my mind as I walked up to her．I touched her on the shoulder and said“You were right, you know．These flowers are indeed for a very special lady．”I hand??the fowes and thanked her tor such a mice conversation．

　　It took her a moment to realize htat I was giving her the flowers I had just purchased．“You have a wonderful evening ,”I said．I left het with a big smile and my heart warmed as I saw her smelling the beautiful flowers．

     Surgeons in Spain have successfully carried out the world's first organ transplant (移植) using new stem
cell technology. Some people are calling it the greatest medical breakthrough so far this century.
     But what are stem cells? As we know, most cells in our bodies are designed____ -for example, a liver cell
develops to work in the liver and cannot become a heart cell. But stem cells are different. They are very young
and in the laboratory scientists can grow them into different types of cells.
     Claudia Castillo needed a new windpipe (气管) after getting a serious disease. Scientists from the University
of Bristol took a donor windpipe, from someone who had recently died. They used strong chemicals to remove
the donor's cells, leaving a tissue scaffold (组织支架). This was refilled with cells from Ms Castillo's windpipe and stem cells from her bone. After four days the cells had grown sufficiently for the windpipe to be
transplanted into Ms Castillo.
     Currently, transplant patients have to take drugs for the rest of their lives to prevent their bodies rejecting
the new organs. These drugs can have bad side-effects, and do not always prevent rejec tion. But by using
Ms Castillo's own cells, doctors were able to trick her body into thinking the new windpipe was her own organ. Five months on, Claudia Castillo is in perfect health.
     This ground-breaking procedure could be used in other trans- plant operations in the future. Scientists also
believe stem cells might be used to treat Parkinson's disease, heart disease, stroke, ar thritis, burns and so on.
     However, stem cell research is extremely controversial. The most effective stem cells do not come from
adults but from embryos (胚胎) created in laboratories which are just a few days old. Many people have
religious or ethical objections to growing embryos, even if they can be used to cure diseases.

would be waiting for me around the next corner, but I knew he would oive me at least ar hour before coming
to help. The sun burned my face; sweat ran off my forehead into my eyes and stuck my shirt to my body;
mosquitoes flew into my mouth when I breathed. To stand still in this place was to kill myself; anyway, to sit
around waiting for Mat to help was more than my feminist pride could take. I rode back along the track a f'ew
hundred yards to get a good run-up (助跑) and over I went. Mat was right: all the obstacles were in my mind.
