题目内容

Last August, Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen. With a checklist of criteria in hand, the Dallas family looked around the country visiting half a dozen schools. They sought a university that offered the teenager's intended major, one located near a large city, and a campus where their daughter would be safe.

“The safety issue is a big one.” says Joe Mahoney, who quickly discovered he wasn't alone in his worries. On campus tours other parents voiced similar concerns, and the same question was always asked: what about crime? But when college officials always gave the same answer--“That's not a problem here.”--Mahoney began to feel uneasy.

“No crime whatsoever?” comments Mahoney today. “I just don't buy it.” Nor should he: in 1999 the U.S. Department of Education had reports of nearly 400000 serious crimes on or around our campuses. “Parents need to understand that times have changed since they went to college,” says David Nichols, author of Creating a Safe Campus. “Campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation.”

But getting accurate information isn't easy. Colleges must report crime statistics(统计数字)by law, but some hold back for fear of bad publicity, leaving the honest ones looking dangerous. “The truth may not always be obvious,” warns S. Daniel Carter of Security on Campus, Inc., the nation's leading campus safety watchdog group.

To help concerned parents, Carter promised to visit campuses and talk to experts around the country to find out major crime issues and effective solutions.

(1) The Mahoneys visited quite a few colleges last August ________.

[ ]

A.to express the opinions of many parents

B.to choose a right one for their daughter

C.to check the cost of college education

D.to find a right one near a large city

(2) It is often difficult to get correct information on campus crime because some colleges ________.

[ ]

A.receive too many visitors

B.mirror the rest of the nation

C.hide the truth of campus crime

D.have too many watchdog groups

(3) The underlined word “buy” in the third paragraph means ________.

[ ]

A.mind
B.admit
C.believe
D.expect

(4) We learn from the text that “the honest ones” in the fourth paragraph most probably refers to colleges ________.

[ ]

A.that are protected by campus security

B.that report campus crimes by law

C..that are free from campus crime

D.that enjoy very good publicity

(5) What is the text mainly about?

[ ]

A.Exact campus crime statistics.

B.Crimes on or around campuses.

C.Effective solutions to campus crime.

D.Concerns about kids' campus safety.

RMB’s appreciation to remain gradual

BEIJING - French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe will visit Beijing on Wednesday for talks ahead of the G20 summit in France in November. The summit will discuss the global economic crisis and high levels of sovereign debt owed to China.

The Chinese government has been under pressure from Washington and other trading partners to ease currency policies and other measures that they complain keep the yuan undervalued and swell China's trade surplus(贸易顺差).

But Wei Jianguo, secretary-general of the China Center for International Economic Exchange, said too rapid appreciation of the renminbi will chill the country's exports next year, especially when the global economy is expected to slow down.

"Next year will be a critical period for China's trade, as the ongoing debt crises in the European Union and United States reduce their demand while yuan appreciation and ever-increasing trade protectionism hit China's exports," said Wei, who was a former vice-commerce minister.

While China's exports to emerging economies grow rapidly, they account for just one-third of those lost to developed economies, Wei said, China's trade surplus will decrease to less than $100 billion for 2011 from last year's $183 billion.

Customs data showed China's imports growth surged to 30.2 percent in August, up from July's 22.9 percent, showing that Chinese demand remained robust despite government efforts to steer economic growth to a more sustainable level.

Zhou Xiaoehuan, China's central bank governor, said in February that the yuan's appreciation will not compromise to foreign pressure, and China will write its own ticket on the pace of its currency appreciation. On Aug 11, the yuan strengthened beyond 6.4 versus the dollar for the first time in I7 years, and visited its all-time trading peak in August 30 to 6.38.

Robert Zoellick, president of the World Bank, said last week that inflation was "the most important" issue for China, and he suggested the yuan appreciation would help ease inflation(通货膨胀), because "an appreciated currency lowers prices at home of the foreign goods".

But Lian Ping, chief economist at the Bank of Communications, said that to curb inflation should not be entirely dependent on the yuan's appreciation.

"To lower the domestic inflationary pressure via the yuan's appreciation will have to require sharp increase in a short term," Lian said.

"It will be undoubtedly at the cost of a sharp decline of the export and loads of jobs lost the loss outweighs the gain."

FRIDAY, Aug.3(Health Day News)-Middle school students who are physically fit are likely to score higher on standardized tests measuring reading and math abilities, a new study has found. And, the average scores went up in connection with levels of fitness, the findings showed.

“The more physically fit kids were, the higher their scores,” said the study's lead author, Trent Petrie, director of the Center for Sport Psychology at the University of North Texas in Denton.“Parents should encourage their kids to be physically active. There are some real cognitive(认知的)and academic benefits that come from physical fitness,” Petrie said.

Results of the study are scheduled to be presented Friday at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in Orlando, Fla.The study included more than 1,200 middle school students from five schools in a suburban area of Texas, with 561 boys and 650 girls.About 57 percent of the children were white, and nearly one-quarter were Mexican American.Nine percent were black and about 2 percent were of Asian descent.

The school district provided the researchers with information on the children's race, age, grade level and whether they qualified for the free school lunch program, which was an indicator of the family's socioeconomic status. The schools also provided scores to the tests, which were given between one and four months after the researchers had assessed the children's levels of fitness.Fitness tests were administered during physical education classes to determine the youngsters' heart and lung health(cardiorespiratory fitness), as well as their body mass index(BMI), an indicator of how much body fat a person has.The children also filled out questionnaires that helped the researchers determine factors such as self-esteem and social support.

After accounting for factors such as age, sex, family income and self-esteem, the researchers found that for both boys and girls, higher levels of heart and lung health predicted better scores on both the math and reading tests.

For boys, perceived(感观的)social support also seemed to increase their reading scores, the investigators found. In girls, while being physically fit predicted higher reading scores, so too did a higher BMI-which indicates more body fat.“We were a little surprised by this finding,” Petrie said.

“It was not as strong an association as the one with physical fitness,” he added. The authors suspect it may have something to do with girls this age entering adolescence, which may be related to a higher BMI and slightly higher brain development. He said he plans to make great effort to look for this relationship again in larger studies to see if it was a chance finding, or if the association holds up.

“While we can't say 100 percent that physical fitness causes better academic performance, we can say that there is a strong and predictive relationship between physical fitness and academic performance,” Petrie said.

“It's hard to tease apart(梳理)the exact reason for this association,” said Becky Hashim, an attending clinical psychologist and assistant professor in the departments of psychiatry and pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Montefiore, in New York City.

“It may be that the children are getting more oxygen. When the heart and lungs are working at a higher capacity, it may allow the brain to work at peak performance.Children who are less fit may be sleepier during school,” she noted.“I personally feel that there's probably a strong relationship between the confidence you get from being able to do something physical well and academic performance.”

Whatever the reason behind this association may be, “there's certainly no harm in pushing physical fitness,” Hashim added.“Physical fitness may make you feel better, give you more confidence and improve your performance across the board,” she said.

Petrie agreed.“Physically fit kids are happier, have higher self-esteem and, tend to have better relationships, and now we're beginning to see that there also seem to be benefits cognitively and academically. Our study sends a strong warning to policymakers to reconsider the service program of physical education classes for kids,” he said.

[ ]

A.

By analyzing the data of fitness tests.

B.

17【题文】You're busy filling out the application form for a position you really need. Let's assume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed your degree. Isn't it appealing to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma represents a Harvard degree? Or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University? More and more people are turning to cheat like this to land their job or to move ahead in their careers, for personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university.

Registrars(登记员) at most well-known colleges say they deal with deceitful claims like these at the rate of about one per week. Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms, then. If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are unwilling to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school calls them "cheats"; another refers to them as "special cases". One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says that these claims are made by "no such people". To avoid outright(彻底的) lies, some job-seekers claim that they "attending" means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that "being associated with" a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century—that's when they began keeping records, anyhow. If you don't want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a false diploma.

One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of nonexistent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from "Smoot State University". The prices increase rapidly for a degree from the "University of Purdue". As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper.

41.The main idea of this passage is that ______.

A.employers are checking more closely on applicants now

B.lying about college degrees has become a widespread problem

C.college degrees can now be purchased easily

D.employers are no longer interested in college degrees

42.According to the passage, "special cases" refers to cases that ______.

A.students attend a school only part-time

B.students never attended a school they listed on their application

C.students purchase false degrees from commercial firms

D.students attended a famous school

43.We can infer from the passage that _______.

A.performance is a better judge of ability than a college degree

B.experience is the best teacher

C.past work histories influence personnel officers more than degrees do

D.a degree from a famous school enables an applicant to gain advantage over others in job competition

44.This passage implies that ______.

A.buying a false degree is not moral

B.personnel officers only consider applicants from famous schools

C.most people lie on applications because they were dismissed from school

D.society should be greatly responsible for lying on applications

18【题文】Doris Lessing was born in 1919 in Persia, moving as a child with her family to southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, where she stayed in school only to the age of 14.

A year after moving to London, she published her first novel in 1950. The Grass is Singing examines unbridgeable racial conflict in colonial Africa through the eyes of a white farmer's wife and her black servant.

Her literary breakthrough came in 1962 with publication of The Golden Notebook, seen by many, though not necessarily Lessing, as a pioneering work of modern feminism(女权运动). A disjointed study of the mind of the main character, Anna Wulf, the novel explores her thoughts about Africa, politics, relationships with men and sex, and Jungian analysis and dream interpretation.

Lessing's themes changed to psychology in her works from the 1960s, and by the 1970s she was interested in the Islamic mystic tradition of Sufism(苏菲教派). Her turn toward science fiction with the Canopus series in the early 1980s was not warmly received by traditional critics, but she has continued to be popular with new readers and numerous literary awards, including the David Cohen British Literary Prize and the Companion of Honour from the Royal Society of Literature, both in 2001.

Following the announcement, the Horace Engdahl told VOA why he was personally so pleased with Lessing's selection.

“She is one of the truly great writers -- of novels, short stories, fiction and non-fiction,” Engdahl said. “She is one of the few writers who have had the courage to uphold the principle of equality between the male and female experience, and she has given the impulse to numbers of other women writers. And she is really the mother of a school that is one of the most important in our contemporary literature.”

At 87, Doris Lessing is the oldest Nobel Literature winner since the first prizes were awarded in 1901.

49. What would be the best title of the passage?

A.Doris Lessing’s Great Writings.

B.Doris Lessing’s Concern about Africa.

C.A Great Writer of Novel and a Pioneer of Modern Feminism.

D.A Nobel Prize Winner for Literature.

50.It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

【答案】

Dear Jack,

I’m very glad to tell you something about the Beijing Olympic Games. The 2008 Summer Olympic Games lasted 17 days, which were held in Beijing on August 8th and dropped their curtain on Aug. 24. More than 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries and areas took part. The Games saw 43 new world records and 132 new Olympic records. The American athlete, Michael Phelps broke the record for most gold medals in one Olympics. China performed so wonderfully that it won a total of 100 medals, including 51 gold medals, leading the gold medal count for the first time in history.

Beijing’s successful hosting of the Games has earned global praise and the organizing work has been considered perfect. I hope the 2012 London Olympic Games will also be a perfect one.

With best wishes.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua
