Running like the wind, roaring (咆哮) like thunder, tigers have long been feared and respected as a king
of the animal world. But last week a report said that there are no more than 30 wild tigers left in south China.
This was the conclusion of a team of scientists from China's State Forestry Administration and the World
Nature Fund.
The South China tiger, also known as the Chinese tiger, is native to southern China. In the 1950's, there
were over 4000 tigers found in mountain forests in the country. But due to the destruction of their natural
habitat (栖息地) and uncontrolled hunting, it has been pushed on to the list of the world's top ten most
endangered species.
Sixty-six of the big cats can be found in the cages of a dozen zoos around China. But they are nothing like
their wild cousins. They have lost their natural skills such as hunting and killing. If they were set free they
could not look after themselves.
"Breeding has damaged the quality of the species", said Pei Enle, deputy director of the Shanghai Zoo.
To reintroduce the species into the wild, the country started a programme to send five to ten young tigers
to South Africa. Four of them have already arrived. Progress has been made as two elder tigers have
recovered some of their instincts(本能) and can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.
" South Africans are very experienced in reintroducing big animals to the wild. The country has very good
natural conditions for the tigers to learn in", said Lu Jun, office director of the National Wildlife Research and
Development Center. "We tried in Fujian Province, but it was not successful as there was not a complete
eco-chain (生物链) and there was a lack of space." The tigers should return to China in 2007 when the
reservations in Fujian are ready.
1. What is the main reason for the South China tiger becoming one of the world's top ten most
endangered species?
A. Because it has lost its natural instincts.
B. Because there is not a complete eco-chain.
C. Because there is no space for it.
D. Because uncontrolled hunting has destroyed its natural living conditions.
2. How is the programme of sending several tigers to South Africa getting on?
A. Its effect still remains to be seen.
B. Two tigers can already compete with their wild cousins.
C. Some of the tigers are already on the road to recovering their natural skills.
D. The tigers should be able to recover their instincts completely by 2007.
3. By saying " but they are nothing like their wild cousins", the writer means that ______.
A. they are no longer feared by other wild animals
B. they don't know how to hunt or kill
C. a complete change has resulted in the species because of breeding
D. to reintroduce them into the wild has become an urgent task
4. What is the purpose of sending young tigers to South Africa?
A. To help the tigers recover their ability to live in the wild.
B. To provide them with a better environment.
C. To get the tigers to go on a tour.
D. To find a complete eco-chain for them.
5. Which one is not the reason for South Africa being chosen as the training place?
A. Because the tigers can hunt wild animals by themselves at the African base.
B. Because South Africans are skilled at dealing with the tigers.
C. Because there is a complete eco-chain and enough space there.
D. Because the country has good natural conditions for the tigers to learn in.

Dogs have long been used to find explosives and drugs. Now, a new study shows that man's best friend
can also help to find lung and breast cancer, researchers report in integrative Cancer Therapies. The findings
show that trained ordinary household dogs can detect early-stage lung and breast cancers by smelling the
breath samples of patients.
Researchers have found that cancer cells send out molecules different from those of healthy ones, and that
might be sensed by smell by the highly sensitive dog's nose.
For the study, five dogs were trained by a professional instructor to respond differently to breath samples
of healthy and cancer patients. "The dogs learned to sit or lie down in front of cancer patient samples and to
ignore control samples through the method of food reward," McCulloch explained.
After a period of training, researchers tested the animals' ability to distinguish cancer patients from controls.
The animals were given breath samples from 55 patients with lung cancer, 31 with breast cancer and 83 healthy
controls who were not included in the original training period.
McCulloch's group found that the dogs were able to correctly distinguish the breath samples of cancer
patients from those of the control subjects in about 90 percent of the cases. The dogs were also able to
detecting early-stage lung and breast cancers.
"These results show that there is hope for early detection," McCulloch said. The re-searches are planning to
conduct further studies on the breath composition of cancer patients to possibly design an electronic device that
can do the dogs' job. "A dog's nose is so powerful it can detect odors (气味) 10 000 to 100 000 times better
than a human nose can. I hope people will be interested in doing this research," McCulloch added, "It shows
that there is definitely something out there."
1. McCulloch and his group used _____ in their research.
A. 10 dogs and 55 people
B. 5 dogs and 86 people
C. 10 dogs and 83 people
D. 5 dogs and 169 people
2. The underlined word "distinguish" means _____.
A. to make somebody feel better
B. to recognize differences of
C. to remember somebody forever
D. to discomfort somebody
3. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. dogs can smell signs of other cancers except the above two kinds
B. the final goal of the researchers is to design an electronic dog to detect cancer
C. dogs can detect odors 10 000 to 100 000 times better than humans can
D. dogs will soon be widely used to smell signs of cancers in hospitals
4. Which of the following would be the best title?
A. Special Noses of Dogs
B. Dogs and Cancer
C. Dogs Smell Signs of Cancer
D. McCulloch's New Discovery

"Have you ever been out on a boat and felt it lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the water and felt
the rush of energy as waves came over you.'?" asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh. "There is certainly a lot of energy in waves," he said.
Scientists are working to use that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow
across the ocean. "The wind starts out by making little ripples (涟漪), but if they keep on blowing, those
ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves," Taylor said."Waves are one of nature's ways of picking up
energy and then sending it off on a journey."
When waves come toward the shore, people can set up darns to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine (涡轮机). The turbine can then power an electrical generator to produce electricity.
"The resource is huge," said Janet Swain of the Worldwatch Institute. "We will never run out of wave
power." Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil or coal.
Oceans cover three-quarters of the Earth's surface-that would make wave power seem ideal for creating energy throughout the world, though there are some weak points yet to overcome.
Swain said that wave power still costs too much money. She also said that its effects on sea animals are still
unknown. What is more, wave power could affect fishing and boat traffic.
Traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may someday run out. "Demand for energy to power our TVs
and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is rising rapidly throughout the world," Swain said. In the future when you turn on a light, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!
1. The writer uses the two questions at the beginning of the passage to ______.
A. test the readers' knowledge about waves
B. draw the readers' attention to the topic
C. show Jamie Taylor's importance
D. invite the readers to answer them
2. The underlined phrase "picking up" (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to ______.
A. starting again
B. speeding up
C. gathering
D. improving
3. We can make better use of wave energy if we ______.
A. shorten its journey to thousands of homes
B. build more small power stations on the oceans
C. reduce the cost of turning it into electric power
D. quicken the steps of producing electricity
4. It can be inferred that some day we might not worry about ______.
A. air pollution
B. our boat traffic
C. our power supply
D. our supply of sea fish

More teachers are starting off the school year with letters to parents and students to introduce themselves
and set a tone (基调)for the year. The letters are a good way to start positive communication with parents,
several teachers told Education World.
"I think it's professional (专业的)," said Dorothy Peselli, an English teacher at Sparta
High School in Sparta, New Jersay, Peselli, who gives out the letters the first day of school,
told Education World."It gives parents an image of you as a professional. If you start
communication off in a positive manner, you will have the parents on your side when you need them."
In her letter to parents, Peselli encourages them to call or e-mail her with specific concerns about their
children."I want to work as a team to make sure that your child becomes an independent lifelong learner,"
Peselli wrote to parents last September. She also telephones the parents of all her students at the beginning of
the year.
Peselli includes with the letter a classroom handbook (手册) listing plans and rules. And she requires that
both parents and students read and sign statements (included in the letter!) that they read the handbook. The
student letter also lists needed supplies and gives encouragement."Please come to class ready to work and learn.
This will be an exciting year for all of us," it  says.
Last year, Peselli taught at a different high school and parents there were"shocked", but appreciative, that
she had so much contact with them,"I received roses and a thank-you note from one boy and his mother".
Peselli said. She wished her own children's teachers would take the time to write notes as well."I never got a
letter home from any of my daughter's high school teachers." She said. "It would be nice to know the
background of some of the people who are teaching my daughter."

With eerily (怪异地) clear and quiet skies across the entire length and breadth of the United Kingdom, the
Icelandic volcanic eruption seems to create even more disruption and chaos. The major eruption from this
massive volcano has halted almost 500,000 people a day who wanted to fly in and out of the UK due to all
flights being suspended.
The last time an event took place on such a large scale was roughly around two hundred years ago, but
as aircraft were not a factor then it had almost no effects at all, and the last time domestic flights were delayed
for any length of time was in the Second World War.
A cloud of volcanic ash has risen 20,000 feet into the sky from a major eruption in Iceland which lies 700
miles north of the United Kingdom, so why would an event like this create so much fuss for Britons and parts
of Europeans?
Volcanic ash contains tiny particles of glass and sulphur (硫), which when sucked into an aircraft's jet
engine can cause the engine to stop. This is the time when you can imagine a pretty catastrophic event to
happen. Back in 1982 an incident involving a jet aircraft and volcanic ash did exactly that. The ash caused all
engines to fail and it was only thanks to the skill of the pilot that everyone on board managed to survive.
So the governing bodies of the airways have decided to cease all air traffic that could be affected by the
cloud of volcanic ash as it is carried by a southward wind down from the north of Scotland across the entire
length and breadth of the UK across the English Channel and over Europe.
On land there have been statements that there is no danger to humans, but people with asthma and
respiratory diseases should stay indoors.
The Iceland volcano that has erupted is apparently not the only one that is worrying scientists, and there
is another volcano which is the Mount Etna. So if it erupted anytime soon with the wind blowing south, an
ash cloud from that one would cause long-term devastation (破坏) and disruption for a very long time. Fingers
crossed, then.
1. What time was it when domestic flights were suspended the last time due to volcanic eruption?
A. About 200 years ago.
B. Back in 1982.
C. During World War Two.
D. In the 1950s.
2. What does the writer try to do in the fourth paragraph?
A. To explain British people's concern about the eruption.
B. To show that British people are very kind.
C. To tell us what is contained in volcanic ash.
D. To show the urgent demand for skilled pilots.
3. Which of the following people would be affected by volcanic ash?
A. People with blood problems.
B. People with heart trouble.
C. People with headaches.
D. People with breathing problems.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. We humans should be ready for more volcanos.
B. Another volcanic eruption is just going to take place soon.
C. The Volcano of Mount Etna would be very destructive.
D. Scientists can do nothing to stop volcanic eruptions.

Researchers in London and Bristol have found that men are particularly likely to yield to depression if their
partners are also depressed.
The findings highlights the importance of paying attention to the partners of depressed mothers as young
children themselves are vulnerable to social problems if both parents are depressed.
Researchers in London and at the university of Bristol launched their study to investigate whether family
structure affects the likelihood of depression in men around the time their child is born. They looked at men
from traditional families, men with children from a previous relationship, men whose parents had children by
a former partner, and men who were not living with their partners.
All 7,018 participants filled out a questionnaire on depression, and answered the questions about their age,
education level and employment status. Details about the quality of their relationship with their partners,
networks of friends and previous life events were also recorded.
About 3.5 percent of the men and 13 percent of their partners suffered depression around the time their
child was born. In comparison, men in step-families or who were not living with their partners were twice
as likely to get depressed as those in traditional families. This could be explained by other factors that are more
common in non-traditional families, such as poor education and relationship conflicts.
Even allowing for all these factors, however, the partners of women who were suffering from perinata (围
产期的) depression were significantly more likely to become depressed themselves, the researchers report in
an American Journal. Ten percent of women who were depressed had depressed partners. For the healthy
women, the figure was only 2.6 percent. Previous research suggests that families with two depressed partners
may need special attention. A researcher in Atlanta has found that primary school children with two troubled
parents have difficulty relating to their peers. "It's extremely important to look at the whole family," she says.
1. What can we conclude from paragraph 1 and 2?
A. Men often mistreat their children
B. Depressed women often have depressed partners
C. All young children are vulnerable to social problems
D. Women with children often have depressed partners
2. Researchers in London and Bristol carry out such an investigation in order to _____.
A. see what kind of family environment is ideal for children to grow up in
B. investigate why so many men get depressed when a child is born
C. study whether family structure affects depression in men when child is born
D. see whether it is true that behind every depressed man there is a depressed woman
3. What kind of man is least likely to get depressed when their child is born?
A. Men in step-families
B. Men in traditional families
C. Men not living with their partners
D. Men in non-traditional families

Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth's surface. Earthquakes happen along
"fault lines" in the earth's crust. Earthquakes can be felt over large areas although they usually last less than
one minute. Earthquakes cannot be predicted-although scientists are working on it!
Most of the time, you will notice an earthquake by the gentle shaking of the ground. You may notice
hanging plants swaying or objects wobbling on shelves. Sometimes you may hear a low rumbling noise or
feel a sharp jolt. A survivor of the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco said the sensation was like riding a
bicycle down a long flight of stairs.
The intensity (强度) of an earthquake can be measured. One measurement is called the Richter scale.
Earthquakes below 4.0 on the Richter scale usually do not cause damage, and earthquakes below 2.0 usually
can't be felt. Earthquakes over 5.0 on the scale can cause damage. A magnitude 6.0 earthquake is considered
strong and a magnitude 7.0 is a major earthquake. The Wenchuan Earthquake, which hit Sichuan Province
in 2008, was magnitude 7.8.
Earthquakes are sometimes called temblors, quakes, shakers or seismic activity. The most important thing
to remember during an earthquake is to DROP, COVER and HOLD ON. So remember to DROP to the floor
and get under something for COVER and HOLD ON during the shaking.
1. Which statement about earthquakes is Not correct?
[     ]
A. Earthquakes are the result of the sudden shock of the earth's surface.
B. Earthquakes usually can be felt because they can last for a long time.
C. There are usually some signs for people to notice an earthquake.
D. People can feel an earthquake over 6.0 because it is very strong.
2. According to the passage, when the earthquake happened, a survivor of the 1906 earthquake in San
    Francisco ______.
[     ]
A. was riding a bicycle
B. was just climbing the stairs
C. heard a low rumbling noise
D. felt like riding a bicycle
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
[     ]
A. Most of the time, people can not feel or predict the earthquakes.
B. Earthquakes are sometimes called temblors, quakes shakers or seismic activity.
C. The Wenchuan Earthquake, which hit Sichuan Province in 2008 caused serious damage.
D. When an earthquake happens, it is important to drop on the floor immediately.

In a recently published book, I came across some exercises with interesting names such as fishbone
diagrams, lotus flowers and clustering. As I used these exercises in my classes, I noticed that students
were interested. They said more and wrote more. They enjoyed expressing their ideas and sharing them
in groups. They were no longer passively waiting for the bell, but actively took part in the lesson. I find
that creativity (创新) can act as a way to increase participation and improve fluency (流利程度).
Creativity has become a popular word in recent years. Scholars in the arts, psychology (心理学),
business, education, and science are all working to get a deeper understanding of it. Robert J. Sternberg
is a creativity specialist and Yale professor of psychology. He defines creativity as"the ability to produce
work that is both new (original) and appropriate (applicable to the situation)". This definition is useful, as
we want our students to use language in a new way, and to use it correctly and properly. Most scholars
say there are two types of creativity: big "C" creativity and small "c" creativity. Big "C" creativity refers
to genius level thinking that results in artistic masterpieces and scientific breakthroughs. Small "c" creativity
refers to everyday level thinking that can be used in any situation. Our emphasis is on the latter. While it
goes without saying that any of our students could go on to be the next Picasso or Edison, our aim is to
help students produce more ideas and use language in new ways.

Professor Barry Wellman of the University of Toronto in Canada has invented a term to describe the
way many North Americans interact (互动) these days. The term is "networked individualism". This
concept is not easy to understand because the words seem to have opposite meanings. How can we be
individuals (个体) and be networked at the same time? You need other people for networks.
Here is what Professor Wellman means. Before the invention of the Internet and e-mail, our social
networks included live interactions with relatives, neighbors, and friends. Some of the interaction was
by phone, but it was still voice to voice, person to person, in real time.
A recent research study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project showed that for a lot of people,
electronic interaction through the computer has replaced this person-to- person interaction. However, a lot
of people interviewed for the Pew study say that's a good thing. Why?
In the past, many people were worried that the Internet isolated (孤立) us and caused us to spend too
much time in the imaginary world of the computer. But the Pew study discovered that the opposite is true.
The Internet connects us with more real people than expected - helpful people who can give advice on
careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college. About 60 million Americans
told Pew that the Internet plays an important role in helping them make major life decisions.
Thanks to the computer, we are able to be alone and together with other people-at the same time!
1. The underlined phrase"networked individualism" probably means that by using computers people ____.
A. stick to their own ways no matter what other people say
B. have the rights and freedom to do things of their own interest
C. do things in their own ways and express opinions different from other people
D. are able to keep to themselves but at the same time reach out to other people
2. According to the Pew study, what do many people rely on to make major life decisions?
A. Networks.
B. Friends.
C. Phones.
D. Parents.
3. It can be inferred from the Pew study that ______.
A. people have been separated from each other by using computers
B. the Internet makes people waste a lot of time and feel very lonely
C. the Internet has become a tool for a new kind of social communication
D. a lot of people regard the person-to-person communication as a good thing
4. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. We're Alone on the Internet.
B. We're Communicating on the Internet.
C. We're Alone Together on the Internet.
D. We're in the Imaginary World of the Internet.
