Climbing is our life

Last summer Annabelle Jones and Claire Hippert, two 17-year-old English schoolgirls, decided to climb the Matterhorn, the famous snow-covered mountain in Switzerland. The Matterhorn is popular to mountain climbers because it is so difficult to climb.

The girls first got the idea for a climbing expedition a few years ago, when a well-known disabled(unable to use legs or arms, etc.) climber, Norman Croucher, gave a talk at their school. Norman lost both his legs in a train accident when he was nineteen, but he has climbed some of the world's highest mountains on his artificial legs. “He inspired us,” said Claire.

Then the girls met a well-known mountaineer called Turbo Thomas and he became their trainer. For the next two years he took them climbing in the Swiss Alps during the summer holidays and they trained very hard. “It wasn't easy,” said Annabelle.

“The weather was often a problem. Sometimes it was so cold that we didn't want to get out of bed, but Turbo dragged us to the foot of the mountain and made us climb.”

The girls kept going and finally they were ready to try the Matterhorn. They made a date for the last week in August and travelled to Zermatt. They started to climb, but unluckily the weather beat them. “It rained every day so it was impossible to climb very far,” said Claire.

Are they disappointed? “Of course not,” said Annabelle. “I know we didn't get to the top, but we'll be back next summer to try again! Climbing is our life.”

A French girl outside Buckingham Palace said:“I was so excited. I saw the Queen! She came out in a Rolls Royce. I've been interested in your royal family since I was a little girl. I've read all the stories, especially about Charles and Diana, in French newspapers and magazines. They tell me what your royal family really do. Your newspapers can't tell the truth about them!”

An Italian boy, who was in Britain for the first time, talked about the weather. “I can' t understand it. I've been here for over a week, and I still haven' t seen any fog!”

A Japanese student from Tokyo said:“I've been in Britain since April, and I' m living with a British family. I've noticed one big difference between British and Japanese families. British men do jobs like cooking, washing up and ironing. They're jobs which I've never seen Japanese men do. They think it' s women's work. But I don' t agree!”

A German student, at a language school in Oxford said:“I thought Britain was a modern European country, you've been in the EEC for years now. So why do you still use miles, pints, and pounds, instead of kilometres, litres and kilos? And why do you still drive on the wrong side of the road?”

A Danish girl in Brighton said:“I came to Britain a month ago. I've noticed one very strange thing here. After British people have washed the dishes, they never rinse(remove…with water) them. They just take them out of the dirty, soapy water and leave them to dry!”

A Swedish girl said:“I've watched a lot of television since I arrived in Torquay two weeks ago. British television's wonderful! But the “programmes” which I've enjoyed most are the advertisements. They're very funny a very clever, or both. Back home in Sweden we don't have any TV advertisements at all!”

Parents whose children show a special interest in a particular sport have a difficult decision to make about their children's careers(职业). Should they allow their children to train to become top sportsmen and women? For many children it means starting very young and schoolwork, going out with friends and other interests have to take second place. It's very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has to train for five hours a day, even at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing.

Another problem is of course money. Only the very best young sportsmen and women can get some money from the government. In most cases, it is the parents who have to find the time and the money to support their child's training-and sports clothes, transport to competitions, special equipment can all be very expensive.

Many parents are worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles(肌肉) may be damaged by training before they are properly developed. Professional trainers(职业训练师), however, believe that it is only by starting young that you can reach the top as a successful sports person. What is clear is that very few people do reach the top and both parents and children should be prepared for failure even after many years of training.
