Many people asked me how I started Pajama (睡衣) Program, but in fact, it seemed that Pajama Program came to me. I never planned to start it. In the beginning, I just wanted to find my purpose (意义) in life.

I visited a children’s home. I read to them in the evening once a week. One night I watched them go to sleep. There was no changing clothes, no bedtime stories, no hugs from parents. Bedtime should not be like that. I decided to send some pajamas to the children’s home. I couldn’t change the children’s life, but I could give them warm, clean pajamas to sleep in.

The next week I took some pajamas to the children’s home. One little girl didn’t take the pajamas from me. She asked me quietly, “What are these?”

“They’re pajamas,” I said.

“When do I wear them?”

“When you go to bed at night.”

She still didn’t understand.

“What do you usually wear to bed?” I asked her.

“My pants,” she said.

I felt sad. A few weeks later, it seemed that a “raindrop” fell onto my head and the words PAJAMA PROGRAM spoke to me loud. Then I started to tell everyone to give me new pajamas for my birthday, Christmas ..., and I gave them to children in need. And then I found my purpose in life.

Let’s Learn More about Each Other

Are the lives of city kids the same as those in villages? In many ways, they are very different. But what are the differences?

Hu Peng of Wuhan and four friends decided to find them out. Earlier this month, they lived for a week in Caidian, a village near Wuhan. Hu and his friends went door to door in Caidian and asked the kids there lots of questions. They wanted to learn more about village kids’ everyday lives, so they asked these questions like —Do your parents teach you how to do housework? How much money do you usually spend on dinner? What would you do if a thief came into your house? They also asked 150 city kids the same questions.

What’s the Difference?

Last week the team gave a report to their class. There are lots of differences between children’s lives in cities and those in villages. The biggest difference is independence. Hu’s team said that 60 percent of city kids couldn’t do much housework, but 90 percent of village kids could care for themselves.

City kids told Hu they cared about school a lot, and they had no time for washing clothes or making their beds. Village kids said they helped their parents with housework a lot. They cooked, did some cleaning and fed animals. Hu’s team also found that village kids had less pocket money. Many never used computers. They played in rivers or on mountains. Some didn’t really like to make new friends.

Hu and his friends said their trip gave them more self-confidence because they were doing something by themselves. But it also made them a little worried because they saw they still had a lot to learn. “When we grow up, our parents can’t take care of us,” said Hu. “We have to learn to take care of ourselves.” Shen Guanquan, one of Hu’s friends, said, “When children learn to care for themselves, they learn to do lots of things.”

Years ago, if a person had some problem in his life, he might go home and write in his diary. Now he might go onto the Internet and write about them in a blog.

Differences between a blog and a diary

Usually, a person thinks of his diary as a book full of secrets. He does not want to share. But in the blog, anyone can read what he writes.

I have a little sister, and sometimes I go onto the Internet to read her blog. She writes about swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry exam. When I was her age, I wrote about the same things, but only in my diary. Then, after I finished writing, I would put my diary in a secret place because I was worried that my sister might read it!

Problems with blogging

The biggest problem with blogging is that anyone can read what you write. If I was angry with a friend and wrote something bad about her in my diary, she would never know. However, if my sister wrote something bad about a friend, that friend might read her blog and get angry. Because we do not always think about things carefully before we write about our days. It is easy to hurt others’ feeling in a blog. So we have to be very careful about what we write.

Keeping in touch with (保持联系)friends

Blogging has both good and bad points, of course. People choose to blog because they know that their friends will read what they write.

If I was feeling sad one day and wrote in my diary “Nobody cares about me,” no one would know about it. However, if my sister wrote the same sentence in her blog, her best friends would quickly reply and tell her how much they like her. Blogs help people keep in touch with their friends and know what the people around them and doing.

Blogs are a very good way to write about daily life, if people are careful aout what they write. However, I still like writing better in my diary!
