I will never forget the year I was about twelve years old. My mother told us that we would not________Christmas gifts because there was not enough money. I felt sad and thought, “What would I say when the other kids asked what I’d got?” Just when I started to accept that there would not be a Christmas gift that year, three women turned up at our house with gifts for all of us. For me they brought a doll. What a________I felt! I would no longer have to be satisfied when I returned to school. I wasn’t forgotten. Somebody had thought ________of me to bring me a gift.

Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my first Christmas there special and memorable, I________the women’s visit. I decided that I wanted to create that same feeling of importance for as many children as I could possibly__________.

So I came up with a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125 orphans ( 孤 儿 ) at the Christmas party. For every child, we wrapped colorful packages ________with toys, clothes, and school things with a child’s name. We wanted all of them to know they were__________. Before I called out their names and handed them their gifts, I reminded them that they couldn’t open their presents until every child had come forward. Finally, the _______they had been waiting for came as I called out, “One, two, three. Open your presents!” As the children opened their packages, their faces beamed and their bright smiles lit up the room. I know for sure the_________wasn’t just about toys. It was a feeling-the feeling I had from that Christmas so long ago when the women came to visit. I wasn’t forgotten. ________ thought of me. I matter.

Last week, my father and I went fishing. He handed me the rod ( 鱼 竿 ), held my arms and taught me how to throw my line into the water. The sun warmed us. We sat and talked. “I remember when I could sit here and watch the fish swimming in the water,” he said. “Sometimes, they’d jump out and land beside me. I didn’t even need a fishing rod then. “We have to be patient,” he continued. “The fish may come or they may not. It doesn’t matter. We’re out in the sun. It’s a beautiful day. If it rained, we couldn’t be here. We’re lucky to have the warmth of the sun.”

He sat under a tree. “Yes, it’s a great day,” he said. I watched our bobbers ( 浮 子 ). No fish pulled them under the water that day. It didn’t matter. I was with my father. I felt grown up. Just being with him was special.

He was well liked by everyone. He had worked hard all his life for what little he had, but he could still find time to laugh. I wanted to be like him when I grew up. He was an amazing man. In the short time we had been together, he taught me many things: how to fish, the value of a good laugh, the value of a good friend, respect for my elders and the importance of working hard and loving harder. The list is long.

When kids are young, we make them read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they “understand” all the words they are reading. This means that when they don’t know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. They may lose face in public. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously (冒险地).

One day soon after school had begun, I said to them, “Now I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out if you understand the books. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that’s enough. Also I’m not going to ask you what words mean.”

The children sat amazed and silent. Was this a teacher talking? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, “Mr Holt, do you really mean that?” I said just as seriously, “I mean every word of it.” During the spring she really surprised me. One day, she was reading Moby Dick 《白鲸》 at her desk. I said, “Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?” She answered, “Oh, sure, but I just skip over (略过) those parts and go on to the next good part.”

This is what reading should be, an exciting, joyous adventure. Find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, go on to something else.
