Did you hear of “comfort zone”(舒适区)? It is like a place where you feel comfortable with yourself and do things without feeling ________.

For example, you feel very comfortable and relaxed to speak in front of ten people, however, it ________ you feel uncomfortable and stressed when you have to give the speech to more than ten people. Then ten people would be the comfort zone for your public(公共的) speech.

When Lisa started in eighth grade with new classmates, she thought she was not going to have a wonderful school life. She only had three friends. And she was ________ afraid to speak in front of class. She had a lot of negative(消极的) ideas when she noticed people ________ her. She was always thinking about if people liked her or if ________ thought she was cool.

This all changed when she went out of her comfort zone and started communicating more with her classmates. ________ she found surprised herself. Her classmates actually really liked her and enjoyed playing with her. Now she has become more outgoing and she is ________ than she ever was before. She says she wishes she has done it earlier.

Going out of the comfort zone and trying some new things could be difficult for some people at first, like Lisa. That’s because they are afraid to fail and dislike getting uncomfortable. If they always stay ________ their comfort zone, they will stop making progress. These days China has surprised the world with its new great inventions —— high-speed railways, Alipay(支付宝), shared bicycles and online shopping.

Lin Jinlong, a student from Cambodia enjoys his life in China and says, “my wallet is not used anymore. I can buy and eat whatever I want just with a tap(轻敲) of my phone. Even fruit sellers are using Alipay.” He laughed, “We can also order food at home, super fast and easy, but when I was in Cambodia, I had to go outside.”

Another student from Cambodia, Wu Mei, shared her experience of taking Chinese high-speed railway. It only takes half an hour from Beijing to Tianjin. For the same distance, people in Cambodia may spend three hours sitting on the train because there are only two railways.

How much pocket money do you get from your parents each week? Is it growing in recent years?

If it is, then you are luckier than kids in Britain. According to reports, they are getting less and less pocket money. British researchers did a survey of 1,204 children between 8 and 15 years old. They found the average amount (平均数) of pocket money for British kids was about 5.8 pounds a week in 2010. After spending 40 hours playing the online game King of Glory, a 17-year-old boy had a stroke and nearly died. This happened in Guangzhou in April last year. It shows how bad things can get if one becomes addicted to the Internet.

Among China’s 772 million Internet users, about 151 million of them are between the ages of 10 and 19, according to China Internet Network Information Center. It is necessary for parents and school to educate children to use the Internet in a good way.

To stop more teenagers from becoming addicted to the Internet, the Ministry of Education(MOE)(教育部) sent a letter on April 20 to all parents in China. It calls on them to pay more attention(注意) to their children’s online activities. It is also advised that children should limit their screen time to less than 1.5 hours a day.In South Korea, there’s a law that stops children under the age of 16 from playing online games between midnight and 6 am.

The MOE also sent a notice to primary and middle schools, asking them to monitor(监督) students’ Internet use including smart phones. Internet is full of all kinds of information. Some is useful and proper for students, helping them know more about the world while others may not. Schools are told to teach students how to avoid unhealthy content, such as violence(暴力) or vulgar(粗俗的) languages.

MOE’s messages leave us to think about why some of our children choose to sit before the screen day and night instead of going out to breathe the fresh air. Maybe children should develop some healthy habits, like reading, playing sports and playing instruments. Also, it’s better to fill children’s weekends with family activities like doing housework together or visiting somewhere. The Internet can be part of children’s life but not everything.

What will you do if a doctor tells you that you have a serious illness and just have a few years to live? Will you give up all your hopes and wait to die? All those were the difficulties Stephen Hawking faced in 1963.

Stephen Hawking, one of the most famous scientists in the world, was born in 1942 in Oxford, England. He began his university education at University College, Oxford in 1959 at the age of seventeen. In 1963 he was diagnosed(诊断) with ALS(肌萎缩性脊髓侧索硬化症), and told that he might only have two more years to live. With the sudden realization that he might not even live long enough, Hawking poured himself into hard work day and night. “I felt it was very unfair—why should this happen to me,” he wrote in his 2013 book, “At the time, I thought my life was over. But now, 50 years later,I am pretty thankful for what I get in my life.” The illness left Hawking in a wheelchair and unable to speak. He had to depend on technology(技术). Luckily, a computer programmer developed a speaking program, which allowed Hawking to choose words on a computer screen. And then these words were passed through a speech synthesizer(合成器). With the help of this program, Stephen Hawking could continue to work. Over the years, he wrote fifteen books, such as A Brief History of Time, The Universe in a Nutshell and The Grand Design.

On March 14, 2018, Hawking died at his home peacefully in Cambridge, England. The news touched people around the world. We have lost a great mind and a wonderful spirit, but his work will live on forever. As he once said, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”
