One summer evening I was sitting by the open window reading a good but frightening story. After a time,it became too dark for me to read easily,so I put my book down and got up to turn on the light. Suddenly,I heard a cry for help. The cry seemed to come from the trees at the end of the garden. I looked out,but it was too dark to see anything clearly. A moment later,I heard the cry again.
"Maybe one of the boys of the neighbourhood has climbed a tree and now he can't get down!" I said to myself. I decided that I should go out and have a look in the garden. I took a torch (手电筒)and picked up a walking stick. Then I walked into the garden. Once again I heard the cry. It was clear that it came from the trees at the end of the garden. "Who's there?" I called out as I walked. No one was in sight. I thought that someone was playing a silly trick on me.
I went back to the house. I had just sat down and began to read my book again when I heard the cry again. This time, the cry came from right behind my shoulder. I dropped my book and jumped up. Sitting on the back of the mantelpiece (壁炉台)was a large green bird. It was a parrot! While I was in the garden, the bird must have seen the light in my room and flown in through the open window.
