Willa Cather once said, "When people ask me whether writing has been a hard or easy road, I always answer with the famous saying: The end is nothing£»the road is all. That is what I mean when I say writing has been a pleasure. I have never used the computer with the thought that one more task had to be done."

Like most writers, Willa Cather did not write books for the money that they brought her, but rather for the pleasure that came in their writing. Her works were, like her, simple and full of the vigor of her days in Nebraska, where she grew from child to young womanhood and where she developed a deep love for the treeless land of the great plain with its wild flowers, wheat fields and rivers.

"It's a rather strange thing about the flat country," she wrote later. "It takes hold of you or it leaves you perfectly cold. A great many people find it very dull; they like a church tower, an old factory, a waterfall, the country all made to look like a German Christmas card...But when I come to the open plain, something happens. I'm home. I breathe differently."

The Power of Story

When my dog Gracie disappeared six years ago, I really learned what I believe. Gracie escaped from our backyard around 2:00 p.m. We searched the neighborhood for hours but had no ______. We put up advertisements, and by dark, we returned home, exhausted (¾«Æ£Á¦½ß).

On the second day, I called my animal doctor, the SPCA, and the animal shelter (ÊÕÈÝËù). Nothing. I felt lost.

If I knew Gracie had been ______, I would have been heartbroken. If I knew she was caught somewhere, I would save her. If I knew she had found a better home, I would be ______ yet relieved (·ÅÐĵÄ). But how do I deal with the unknown? Wait patiently? Search endlessly? Give up?

The third day, while I was searching in the woods with my friend Rhea, I told her losing Gracie was like losing faith (ÐÅÈÎ) in everything. Rhea smiled and said, ¡°You know, maybe Gracie¡¯s on a great adventure.¡± It seems ______, but I felt better then. Rhea¡¯s words ______ me what, as a writer, I surely have faith in: the power of story.

As one writer said, all we have is stories. It¡¯s what holds our life together. We call stories science, some stories myth (Éñ»°), but imagine hearing for the first time that the world may be round. Such stories only become real when we ______ them. And some stories are never supported with scientific facts, but they still seem to hold true.

For example, ten years earlier, I¡¯d dreamt that I should get a ______, and by that evening, Gracie came into my life. When people would ask what kind of dog she was, I would say Muppet wolf terrier (СÁÔ¹·). It was something I ______ because I believed Gracie was half dog, half wolf.

So why not imagine now that she was off on an adventure exploring her wolf side?

The fourth day started with me finding a ______ on the sidewalk, I¡¯d always thought of finding money as a good sign. And I was sure Gracie would come home on the fifth day. I guess it was another story to hold on to.

On Day Five, I was at a friend¡¯s house when her phone rang. I knew immediately it was news about Gracie. And I was right. When I finally saw her in my hallway, I cried. ¡°My wolf days are ______.¡± Gracie seemed to say. ¡°I¡¯m back to being a dog¡±.

Or so is the story I choose to believe.

It was a sunny day yesterday. After a whole day¡¯s work in my office, I walked home. On the busy street, I say a young man _________ some small toys around the corner. Soon, a little girl came with her mother and wanted a toy that could _________ a noise. Kids liked such toys because the noise sounded really funny. The toy was 18 yuan. The mother _________ a 20-yuan note£¨³®Æ±£©. She told the young man how much she was giving him and wanted the change£¨ÕÒÁ㣩_________. I was wondering what he was going to do next. He told the mother to put the money in his bag and get the change _________. Then she did so.

I was so touched that I made a __________ to buy a toy although I didn¡¯t need it at all. He said it cost 18 yuan and I told him that I had only one 20-yuan note. Again he told me to do the same thing as the mother. I put my 20 yuan in his bag, __________ I didn¡¯t take any change.

As I walked down the street, I say another little girl with her father and gave her the __________ I bought. She looked at me in surprise and then thanked me __________. I was happy to see the smile on her face.

The young man was a good __________ to us all. On my way home, I kept thinking the world would be a better place if we all could learn to trust people more, just like the young blind street seller.
