Students who get tired of looking at the four walls of a classroom might like to take the nature course being offered by Carvel College again this summer. Groups of about a dozen students each, led by an experienced guide, will go on ten-day camping trips to the mountains to study the plants and animals that grow and live there.
Students carry their own things which include sleeping bags, warm clothing, food and water, and other useful tools. And what do the students do all day? Well, as soon as the sun comes up, they eat breakfast and start climbing up the mountain trail(小路)to the next campground, which is five to ten miles away. The students take notes when the guide points out different plants and animals alongside the trail. The climb is usually over by early afternoon, so the group spends the rest of the day resting or swimming in a mountain lake. Before dinner each night, they all come together and discuss the day’s activities.
At the end of the course, the students write reports using the information they have collected. But they don’t mind at all. What they do mind is leaving the beauty of the wilderness(荒地)and the good friends they’ve made to return to their normal lives in the city.

On Oct 28, Zhejiang worked out a draft guideline(方案草案) for giving students less homework. The guideline has 33 measures(措施)for both schools and parents.
If their parents agree, primary school students can refuse to do homework after 9 pm. and junior high school students can turn it down after 10 pm. Teachers can't punish(惩罚)students for doing so. This has raised a great number of discussion.
Pros(正方) We will have more free time to do things we like. We will be able to exercise more, develop our interests and relax. |
Cons(反方) Homework helps us get the information, and also examine what we have learned. Without homework, teachers may find a new way to supervise(监督). |
More about the guideline The guideline asks teachers to create no more than one teacher-parent chat group on social media, such as WeChat. What's more, they cannot give homework in the chat group or ask parents to check homework. |
