Mary woke up and looked out of the window. She saw a long piece of land with no trees. “What’s that?” She asked .

Martha, the young servant, said “That’s the moor. Do you like it?”

“No,’ answered Mary. ‘I hated it.”

“I love it,” answered Martha, cheerfully. “In spring and summer it’s covered in flowers, and the air is fresh and it smells of honey.”

“Are you my servant? So are you going to help me to put on my clothes?” asked Mary.

“Can’t you dress yourself?” Martha looked very surprised.

“No,” answered Mary crossly, “In India my Ayah helped me.”

“Well, you must learn to dress yourself.” said Martha.

Mary was so angry that she burst into tears. Martha was frightened. “Please stop crying, Miss. I can help you if you like.”

So Mary stopped crying and Martha dressed her. While she worked, Martha told Mary about her mother and father and their twelve children. They all live in a small house on the moor. At first Mary was not interested, but she began to listen carefully when Martha talked about her brother Dickon. “My brother Dickon is twelve years old and he’s got a young pony.” said Martha , “He found it on the moor with its mother. Animals like Dickon.”
