Yet people around the world continue to smoke. The Great American Smokeout has been founded for twenty-five years to show the dangers of smoking and provide support for people who decide to stop smoking. The American Cancer Society says all cigarettes damage the body. It warns that smoking even a small number of cigarettes is dangerous. It is not easy to give up smoking forever. However, doctors say they probably will live longer if they do stop smoking. They will feel better and look better. They also will protect the health of family members who breathe their smoke.

The American Cancer Society says there is not just one right way to stop smoking. Any useful way to stop smoking is worth tying. They may take long walks or spend time in places where smoking is not allowed. Also, they could eat a small piece of fruit instead of having a cigarette.

The American Cancer Society says the sooner smokers stop smoking, the more they can reduce their risks of getting cancer and other diseases. It says blood pressure(血压)returns to normal twenty minutes after smoking the last cigarette. Carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)gas levels in the blood return to normal after eight hours. Answer the questions.

What will the home of the future look like? Some architects in Hong Kong say that city homes will be smaller, because populations continue to grow and space becomes more expensive.

They have designed “space flats” that are just 30 square meters in size. These flats have three small rooms: a living room, a bathroom and a bedroom, and of course a balcony, but everything is carefully planned to make good use of the limited space.

The living room is the main room of the flat. It can be used as an office, a kitchen or even a second bedroom. There is a sofa that can be designed into a bed. The dining table can be changed into a computer desk. And, if not needed, both the sofa-bed and the table can be folded away and stored into a small space in the wall. There is a flat-screen TV, which can also be used as a computer monitor. In one corner of the room, a small cooker, a microwave and a small refrigerator are hidden out ofsight.

The other rooms are small but practical(实用). The bathroom contains a toilet and a shower. The double bed in the bedroom can also be changed into a sofa, if needed. The balcony has enough room for two people to sit and enjoy the view from the block of flats. All the rooms have large windows to let in plenty of sunshine.

“Space flats” are now being tested in a building in Hong Kong. “It’s wonderful,” said one resident(居民). “The flat is so well-designed that you feel that there is plenty of space.”

Answer the questions ( 根据以下内容回答问题)

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirroring for towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - - in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?

“Because, ” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, no trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. This is the real meaning of peace.”
