【题目】

When Mrs. Klein told her first graders to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful, she thought how little these children, who lived in a terrible neighborhood, actually had to be thankful for. Since it was Thanksgiving Day, she knew that most of the class would draw pictures of turkeys (火鸡) or of Thanksgiving tables with lots of food.

What made Mrs. Klein surprised was Douglas’s picture. Douglas was so shy and likely to be found away from the others as they went outside for games. Douglas’s drawing was simply this:

A hand, clearly, but whose hand? The class was attracted by his picture. “I think it must be the hand of his mum or dad that brings us food,” said one student.

“A farmer,” said another, “because they grow the turkeys.”

“It looks more like a policeman, and they protect us.” “I think,” said Lavinia, who was always so serious, “that it is supposed to be all the hands that help us, but Douglas could only draw one of them.”

Mrs. Klein was very happy to see that the class showed so much interest in Douglas’ picture. When she had the others at work on another project, she went over to him and asked whose hand it was.

Douglas answered in a very low voice, “It’s yours, Teacher.”

Then Mrs. Klein remembered that she had taken Douglas by the hand from time to time; she often did that with the children. But that it should have meant so much to Douglas …

Perhaps, she thought, this was her Thanksgiving, and everybody’s Thanksgiving—not the material things we receive, but the small ways that we give something to others.

1When did the story happen?

A.On Thanksgiving Day.B.On Teacher’s Day.

C.After Thanksgiving Day.D.Before Christmas Eve.

2Douglas drew a picture of hand.

A.his mum’sB.a farmer’sC.his teacher’sD.a policeman’s

3What does the writer want to tell us?

A.Thanksgiving Day is popular.B.Being a good teacher is important.

C.Painting is necessary in our life.D.Giving is more meaningful than receiving.

(joggers)

A few months ago, my neighborhood joined an army of joggers. They were there all the time; early morning, noon, and evenings. There were little old ladies in grey sweaters, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. “Come on!”

My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “You'll feel great.”

Well, I had nothing against feeling great, so I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. According to my experience and the number of the people who left our neighbor jogging army, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around. I'm not alone in my opinion.

First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding (重击) while you run down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack (心脏病突发)while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn't kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.

Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn't my idea of fun. Some joggers say, “I love being out there with just my thoughts.” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.

And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn't just the first week: it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn't fun. So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?

I don't jog any more, and I don't think I ever will. I'm walking fast for two miles three times a week, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I'm getting exercise, and I'm enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I've found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.

1What was the writer’s attitude towards jogging in the beginning?

A.He felt it was worth a try.B.He was very fond of it.

C.He was strongly against it.D.He thought it must be painful.

2Why did the writer give up jogging two months later?

A.He disliked doing exercise outside.B.He was afraid of having a heart attack.

C.He was worried about being left alone.D.He found it neither healthy nor interesting.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.Not everyone enjoys jogging.B.Jogging is an exercise fit for everybody.

C.Jogging will surely cause physical illness.D.Jogging makes people feel greater than other sports.

【题目】Lyme Disease A Medical Mystery

In the autumn of 1975, lots of people in Lyme, Connecticut, suffered from a strange illness. Two doctors from Yale, Allan Steere and Stephen Malawista, began a study that would result in an important medical discovery.

The doctors began by having careful examinations of each patient. They found the patients of all ages were having a set of things hardly seen together, such as headaches, skin rashes (皮疹), swollen knees, fever, tiredness and so on. There was also a high rate of arthritis (关节炎), a painful condition around the knees. No reasons could be found through blood tests. However, they found the most useful information in the interviews with the patients: one quarter of them recalled a skin rash about four weeks before the arthritis appeared.

Then the Department of Health did surveys with the Yale doctors to learn where the disease was most widely seen. It seemed that most patients lived in heavily wooded areas, away from the center of town. Besides, most patients spent a good deal of time outdoors, gardening, camping, or playing. More importantly, some recalled having been bitten by a tick.

By 1977, researchers began to believe that the deer tick was responsible. Then they discovered that a special type of bacteria (细菌), carried by the deer tick, was causing the disease. It was later named Lyme bacteria. The deer tick often feeds on deer. But we can also find it on mice. Scientists then concluded that the bacteria passed from wildlife to ticks to humans. All lived closely among one another in the area.

How could a disease break out so suddenly? Many areas of the northeast, including Lyme, Connecticut, were once farmland. Over the years, the farmland was replanted with trees. After the forest grew in, all kinds of wildlife appeared. At the same time, this area was developed with houses. Gradually, neighborhoods pushed deeper into the home of the wildlife. Humans became more likely to meet more ticks and get the disease.

After much research, the cause of Lyme disease was successfully identified (确认), thanks to the hard work of many scientists, doctors and patients. Today, more and more people have knowledge of Lyme disease, which is easily treated if caught early.

1Which helped Dr. Steere and Dr. Malawista most?

A.Having interviews with the patients.B.Examining the patients carefully.

C.Separating the patients into age groups.D.Doing blood tests among the patients.

2Which of the following is true about Lyme disease?

A.Little is known about Lyme disease today.

B.Most of the patients lived in the center of town.

C.More trees could keep people away from the disease.

D.Wildlife spread the bacteria to ticks and then to humans.

3What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To describe how Lyme disease was treated.

B.To warn people not to go outdoors in the forest.

C.To introduce how the cause of Lyme disease was found.

D.To criticize the people who spread Lyme disease around.
