If you've been studying for a while, you'll notice that there is more than one type of "English". The website, Big Seven Travel, made their list of the world's 50 most attractive accents, and many different kinds of English made the list.
The main reasons that affect the way people speak a language are geographical – where they are in the world, and social – the way their communities speak. As a result, English has many differences in vocabulary and slang.
Located in two different places, the United States and the UK provide great examples. They often have different words for the same things. US people call the back part of a car, used for carrying big and heavy things or suitcases, the "trunk"; but in the UK, they call it the "boot". In the US, the word "boot" means a wheel clamp that police put on your car.
Slang also causes confusion*. US slang is hugely different thanks to many kinds of people who have moved in the country. African-American slang is especially confusing for foreign language learners. It uses its own grammar. For example, "a person who is awake to reality" would be called "a woke person". Southern American slang also can be confusing. "I'm fixing to fix it," means, "I'm getting ready to fix it."
Australian slang, meanwhile, is all about abbreviations. They say "sanga" for "sandwich", "brekkie" for breakfast, and "arvo" for "afternoon". It can make you wonder if either of these countries is actually speaking English.
English writer Virginia Woolf once wrote, "Language is wine upon the lips*." The next time you're speaking English with someone, check the accent on the bottle!

文章大意:文章主要讲述了世界上有很多种英语,网站和Big Seven Travel列出了世界上50种最具吸引力的口音。人们有不同的口音是因为两个原因——地域性和社交性。
【1】细节理解题。根据第二段 The main reasons that affect the way people speak a language are geographical – where they are in the world, and social – the way their communities speak.可知影响人们讲某种语言的方式的主要原因有两个——地域性他们在世界的什么地方,和社交性——他们社会说话的方式;故选B。
【2】词义猜测题。根据 第三段US people call the back part of a car, used for carrying big and heavy things or suitcases, the "trunk"; but in the UK, they call it the "boot".美国人把轿车的后部,用来放大又重的东西或者手提箱称为“trunk”,但是在英国,他们称它为“boot”,可见it指的是the back part of a car,故选D。
【3】推理判断题。根据第三段“Located in two different places, the United States and the UK provide great examples. They often have different words for the same things..” 可知“在不同的地方用不同的词指同样的东西”,推断不同的地方就有不同的英语;故选D。
【4】主旨归纳题。文章主要讲述世界上有很多种英语,因为其地域和社会性,在不同的地方就有不同的英语;故选C。
