When Rasmila Awal who lives in Nepal, walked home from the store on Saturday, the earth began to shake. A few minutes later, she saw the building she lived in fall down.

And inside, Awal knew, were her children Soniya, aged 10, and Sonies, only 5 months old. “I started screaming (尖叫) and asking neighbours for help,” said Awal, who is 35. It looked at first glance as if the children could not have possibly survived (存活).

“I went numb (麻木的),” said Awal. “I didn’t hear anything, didn’t know if they were alive or not.” Her husband, Sham Krishna Awal, 34, a bus driver, was working when the quake shook the area. But Soniya and Sonies were at home.

Sham Awal rushed (冲) home and scrabbled (忙乱地找) frantically through the rubble (碎石), searching for his children. Neighbours came to help. But Rasmila Awal became hopeless.

“I had very little hope that they had survived,” she said. “I didn’t hear any sound at all.” And then, After two hours, Soniya, a fourth-grader, was found alive. But the baby was still missing.

The father also began to lose hope of finding his son alive until, from under the rubble, he heard his son crying. But night had fallen and there was little that could be done. The next morning, the Awals returned there. And they heard their baby was still crying.

The soldiers, having returned as well, started digging again. And 22 hours after the earthquake, the mother saw a soldier pull her baby out of the earth. His face was coated with dust. But he was alive. It was a happy ending.
