A lift is very useful. It looks like a small room. It goes up and down all day. Sometimes a worker stands in the lift. He or she operates(操作) it up and down. In modern lifts there's no worker. People walk in. They know what floor they want to go. They push a button(按钮)and the lift goes to that floor. It's very fast and easy.

Lifts are very important to us. Why? Think about a tall building. Maybe it has twenty floors. Maybe it has fifty or more. Who can walk up all the stairs(楼梯)?Maybe people can climb them once. Can someone climb thirty floors to an office every day? Can small children walk up to their rooms on the twenty-four floor? Can their mothers or fathers carry food up to all those stairs? I still remember the true story that happened to me many years ago. It started while my family were on vacation. Vacations should be relaxing, but I needed to do some studying. I carefully put all my important papers and books in a large bag.

After a long drive to New York, we found a motel, a place for travelers and their cars, with a really good price. So we decided to stay there for a week. On the second day, after visiting some interesting places and having a big dinner, we returned to the motel. It was about ten o’clock in the evening, and I wanted to study. However, I couldn’t find my paper bag anywhere. I was quite sure that I had put it in the room. Suddenly, I realized the cleaner had taken it out with the rubbish.

I ran over to the main office, and asked if I could talk to the cleaner on duty that day. They told me all the cleaners had left for the day. They showed me where the rubbish bins were instead of offering me any help. I walked out of the motel with a flashlight (电筒). I saw three large rubbish bins standing in the dark. 1 had to look for my bag very carefully. But I didn’t have any luck. I almost wanted to give up. When I took another look into the last bin, I saw my bag right on its top! I was never so happy to see such a dirty old bag in my life!

My kids and I were heading into the supermarket over the weekend. On the way, we saw a man holding a piece of paper that said, “Lost my job. Family to feed.”

At this store, a scene like this is not normal. My 10-year-old son noticed him and made a comment(评论) on how bad it must be to have to stand outside in the cold wind.

In the store, I asked each of my kids to pick something they thought our “friend” there would like. They got apples, a sandwich and a bottle of juice. Then my 17-year-old son suggested giving him a gift card. I thought about it. We didn’t have much money ourselves, but … well, sometimes giving from our need instead of our abundance(充裕) is just what we need to do! All the kids declared(宣称) something they could do away with for the week.

When we handed him the bag of food, he lit up and thanked us with wet eyes. When I handed him the gift card, saying he could use it for whatever his family might need, his eyes were filled with tears.

This has been a wonderful experience for our family. For days the kids have been looking for others we can help! Things would have played out so differently if I had simply said, “No, we really don’t have money to give more.” Stepping out not only helped a brother in need, it also gave my kids the sweet taste of helping others. It’ll go a long way with them.
