【题目】Student A, girl, 15

My homework for physics was recycling used batteries! I called up my friends and went to collect them together. Tired but happy, I realized there were lots of used batteries polluting our environment. Let's collect them and save the Earth!

Student B, boy, 14

I felt so stressed when I cooked noodles for my parents, which was my homework. I guessed it would be difficult for my parents to eat the poorly-cooked noodles. But to my surprise, they enjoyed my noodles and praised my cooking skills. In fact, the noodles were not quite as delicious as they said. I understood what family love really is!

Student C, boy, 14

The most interesting homework I've done is planting green beans. I planted five seeds in the pot and watered them twice a day. I expected them to grow, so I watched them every day. A week later, they all grew into beans. Learning is like planting. A good result always comes from great care.

【题目】 Giving up smoking is not only good for your heart and lungs (), it’s also good for your memory, according to a study by Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. The research was published in the online edition (版本) of Drug and Alcohol Dependence. It shows that stopping smoking can strengthen someone’s ability to remember everyday things, according to Sciencedaily.com.

The research looked at three groups of people―27 smokers, 18 ex-smokers (已戒烟者) and 24 people who had never smoked. They were all asked to remember to do a series of tasks in 15 different locations on a university campus. For example, they had to check for text messages on their cell phones when they were getting close to the library, or remember to ask about the cost of membership when they arrived at the sports center.

The study found that smokers could remember just 59 percent of the tasks; people who used to smoke but had now given up remembered 74 percent; and those who had never smoked managed to remember 81 percent of the tasks.

Tom Heffernan, PhD, from the Drug and Alcohol Research Group at Northumbria University said:

Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in the US, it’s important to understand the effects smoking has on everyday cognitive function (认知能力).

The team is now planning to research how second-hand smoke can affect health and everyday memory.

A.Smoking is bad for your memory.

B.Smoking does harm to your health.

A.check for text messages in a certain place

3Which of the following statements about the research is TRUE?

A.24 smokers, 18 ex-smokers and 27 non-smokers took part in the research.

B.Non-smokers remembered the tasks 22 percent more often than smokers could.

C.Ex-smokers could remember the tasks as well as non-smokers could.

D.Smokers, ex-smokers and non-smokers were all in good health.

4What will the team research next?

A.What other cognitive functions smoking affects.

B.Why second-hand smoke is harmful.

C.How second-hand smoke affect health and memory.

D.What the differences between Chinese and foreign smokers are.

【题目】 During ancient times, children didn’t have smart phones, iPads or computers. Instead, they came up with interesting games to play in their childhood. Let’s take a look.

Hide-and-seek

Hide-and-seek is a traditional game for children, popular around the nation.

There are two ways to play: covering a child’s eyes while other kids run around to tease(戏弄) him or, more commonly, players hide and one child must try to find them.

Firecrackers

Firecrackers have a history of more than 2,000 years. It is said that there was a beast named Nian in ancient China, and to scare off the beast, people burnt bamboo joints to make them blast. After gunpowder, which is one of the four ancient Chinese inventions, was invented, it gradually replaced the bamboo joints. Nowadays, firecrackers are still set off during Spring Festival.

Playing diabolo

Diabolo is always made of wood or bamboo and is hollow in the center. By juggling diabolo on ropes, the high-speed rotating(旋转)diabolo will make a sound.

Playing diabolo is a very interesting folk game, especially popular in North China. It also has a long history.

Stone balls

During the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911), kicking a stone ball around was a popular sport in the northern part of China, and it was often played in the winter to keep warm. Stones were carved into small balls and kicked along with feet.
