The last Thursday of November is Thanksgiving Day. It is a holiday in the U.S.A. Usually, family members and friends get together for a dinner. People sometimes drive their cars a long way for a family reunion(团聚). Many people also take Friday off and make it a long weekend holiday, because most Americans do not work on Saturdays and Sundays.

Thanksgiving Day began in 1621, when the first English settlers(定居者) reached the New World. They did not have enough food. But the American Indians helped the white men and taught them how to farm.

In the autumn after the English settlers came to America, they had a good harvest(收获). They were so pleased. They decided to invite their Indian friends to dinner in order to thank them for their help.

As far as family reunion, Thanksgiving Day is even more important than Christmas or New Year's Eve to most Americans.

One afternoon after school, Peter and Jane were walking along the street. Suddenly they heard a big noise. “Come on!” shouted Peter. “That sounds like an accident. Let's see what happened.” They ran to the site where the noise came from.

As they got there, they could see what had happened. A small car had knocked into a truck. The accident had happened in a quiet street with only four houses in it. Peter and Jane were the first ones to reach the accident. No other people came. “We must be the only ones who saw the accident,” said Jane. They found that both the car driver and the truck driver were hurt. “Peter,” said Jane,“Run back down the street to Mrs. Day's house. Ask her to call the police and the ambulance. Hurry! I'll stay here.” Peter went off as fast as he could. There was ________ Jane could do but wait. She knew that when people were hurt in an accident, they shouldn't be moved.
