We all have days when we are down, tired and unhappy. That’s OK. You need days like this, or how can you know you are happy? You’ll enjoy your good days even more when you have a few bad days. Even if sadness is part of life, let’s try to make it small. Here are a few simple ways to help you feel better when you are feeling sad.

First, stand up straight and this helps your energy flow (流动). When your energy is flowing freely, you can flow too. Second, smile! A smile takes little effort but produces good results. It can bring not only you but also people around you a good mood. Third, listen to music. It can be the music that you like best. Some kinds of music work better than others, so try and find out what kind of music works the best for you. Fourth, take some “me” time. You can find pleasure in reading a book, watching a sunrise or having a hot bath, or something like that. Last but not least, exercise. Even something as simple as taking a walk will get your blood flowing. It is a great way to clear your mind of anything that makes you sad.

These ways will cheer you up when you are down, but don’t just use them when you are sad. Try and practise them every day to make them a habit. You will be surprised to learn that these simple ways will keep your sadness away. But if you are in a deep depression (沮丧), go to see a doctor.

One day a strong cowboy was travelling on his horse when he saw a bar. He decided to stop for a few drinks, so he tied (拴) his horse outside the bar, walked into it and ordered two bottles of beer. The cowboy went back to his seat and ordered another two bottles of beer. After five minutes, he walked out and found his horse tied where it was supposed to be.

Captain Nemo seemed very sure that that savages could not harm us. I slept well. When I went outside the next morning, I saw that there were many more natives on the beach. It was low tide, and many of them had come quite close to the Nautilus. I asked Conseil to get a net, and we used it to get some shells from the water. They were very pretty shells. Suddenly, I saw a very rare and beautiful shell. We looked at it together. One of the savages threw a stone at us and broke the shell. Conseil was very angry. He fired his gun at the savage. Then, we noticed that the savages had come very close to the Nautilus in their canoes. A few moments later, they began to shoot their arrows at us. We went inside and told Captain Nemo about it. He ordered his men to close the doors.

“But what will happen tomorrow?” I asked. “You will have to open the doors to get more air, and the savages will come in.”

“Do you think they will dare?”

“I am sure they will.”

“We have nothing to fear,” he said again.

Captain Nemo asked me about our trip to the island. I told him what we had seen and done. We talked about another French sailor called D’Urville, whose ship was wrecked in the Torres Strait. He told me again that the high tide the next day would lift the Nautilus off the reef.(选自《海底两万里》)
