Things didn’t go well for Henry, the village pancake maker. The Great Pancake Contest(比赛) was today. People from different places would try to win the contest .The villagers wanted Henry to win, but Henry had problems. There was not enough wood in the oven to make a pancake. Mice ate half the flour(面粉) during the night.

The villagers saw that Henry was having problems. The woodsman brought wood for the oven. The farmer gave Henry more flour. This was all very good but he was still missing one more important thing. There was hardly enough time for Henry to make his pancake and take it to the contest. But Henry decided to have a try.

As fast as he could, Henry put the wood in the oven. When he made the pancake, he thought, “When I had no wood, the woodsman brought me wood; when I had no flour, the farmer brought me flour. My good friends helped me.”

After Henry finished making the pancake, he ran as fast as he could to the contest. “I’m sorry, Henry,” one of the judges(评判员) said. “You are too late.” Henry's friends were sad for him, but Henry just laughed. “I’ m not sad! Twelve-year-old Leonardo was born in a poor family in Peru. He knew how to read but he had never seen a book in his life. So he asked the new priest (牧师) in his village to give him one. But there was no electricity. So Leonardo borrowed candles from the church and sat up all night reading it.

This made John Medcalf, the priest, really moved (感动的). He also realized that people would love to read if given a chance. But he knew how difficult it was for Leonardo and those in his village to get books. And yet, no one can be taught to read and write without books. To make people in a poor area grow to love books, they have to be with them. So he thought the only way was to bring books to people.

But how could this be done? Mobile libraries or car libraries would be too expensive and difficult to continue in the hilly (多丘陵的) land of Peru. So what other methods could be used?

He got a new idea from the barefoot (赤脚) doctors of China. And that was how the barefoot librarians (图书管理员) first appeared in the villages of northern Peru, almost thirty years ago.

At first, they were teachers of the village schools which these faraway libraries belonged to. But the teachers were not very interested in the job because it meant a lot of hard work. So, the elders in the village took on the job themselves.

Today, there are 600 village libraries across Peru. The barefoot librarians need to walk up to 15 hours a day with bags of books.
