Hundreds of years ago there lived a king in a small country. He liked swimming. When summer came, he always went to another palace by a forest with his guards(卫兵) and returned to the capital in autumn.

One afternoon the king went swimming in a river in the forest but he didn’t tell others about it. He was very happy when he swam in the water. After that he heard a great noise and saw a big bear coming at him. He tried his best to run away. He ran and ran and at last he lost his way. He was hungry and tired when he found an old house. There was an old farmer in it. “It’s your king,” he said to the old man, “I’m hungry now. Bring me something to eat quickly!”

The old man had nothing dear. He only had four eggs. The king ate them and felt better. How much must I pay you for that?”

“Eighteen pounds.”

“How dear they are! Are eggs rare(稀有的)here?”

“No,” answered the old farmer. We have only one king in our country!

When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do?” as an example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.

Language do not just have different sounds, they are different in many ways. It’s important to master(掌握) the rules(规则) for word order in the study of English, too. If the sentences put words in a wrong order, the listeners can’t understand the speakers’ sentences easily. Sometimes when the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.

“She only likes apples.” “Only she likes apples.”

“I’ve seen the film already.” “I have already seen the film.”

When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(精神实际) of the language and use it as the English speakers do.

1From the passage we know that         when we are learning English.

Awe shouldn’t put every word into our own language

Bwe shouldn’t look up every word in the dictionary

Cwe need to put every word into our own language

Dwe must read word by word

2The writer thinks it is         in learning English.

     Adifficult to understand different sounds

Bpossible to remember the word order

Cimportant to master the rules in different way

Deasy to master the rules for word order

3We can learn from the passage that        .

Athe meaning of an English sentence always changes with the order of the words

Bthe order of words can never change the meaning of an English sentence

Csometimes different order of words has a different meaning

Dif the order of words is different, the meaning of the sentence must be different

4 “She only likes apples,”       .

Ais the same as “Only she likes apple”

Bis different from “Only she likes apple”

Cmeans “She likes fruit except apples”

     Dmeans “She doesn’t like apples”

In Britain you are allowed to drive a car when you are seventeen. You have to get a special two-year driving license before you can start. When you are learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren’t allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don’t have to go to a driving school –--- a friend can teach you. 1 The person with you isn’t allowed to take the money for the lesson unless he’s got a teacher’s license.

Before you are allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don’t pass the test, you are allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons. When you’ve passed your test, you don’t have to take it again, and you are allowed to go on driving as long as you like. 2 Britain’s oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100.

Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license. But they didn’t have to take a test until 1935. On the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren’t allowed to go faster than four miles an hour, and someone had to lead the car with a red flag.
