Once there was an old man in a town. He always forgot   1   things. So his wife always had to say to him, “Don’t forget this!”

One day he went on a long trip (旅行)alone. Before he   2    home, his wife said, “Now you have all these   3__. They are what you need for your trip. Take care of your things during the trip.” He went to the station, bought a ticket and   4   the train with it.

About half   5    hour later, the conductor began to see the tickets. He came to the old man and   6   , “Will you please show me your ticket?” The old man looked for his ticket in all his pockets, but he could not find   7  . He was very worried. “I can’t find my ticket. I really bought a ticket   8_ . I got on the train,” said the old man.

“I believe (相信)you bought a ticket. All right, you don’t have to buy  9  one,” said the conductor kindly. “But how can I know where I’m going?  I can’t  10__  my station!” the old man said sadly.

Long, long ago people made fires from lightening (闪电). But they had to keep the fire burning, for they couldn’t start it again if there was no lightening. Later, they found out hitting two pieces of stone together could make a spark (火花). The spark could fire dry leaves. In this way they could make the fire again if it went out. Then people also learned to make a fire by rubbing (摩擦). They made a hole on a piece of wood and put a smaller stick into the hole. They turned the stick again and again. After a few minutes they got a fire.

A years went by, people learned other ways to make a fire. Sometimes they used the heat from the sun. They held a piece of glass in the right way and made a piece of paper on fire.

About two centuries ago, people began to make matches. Matches brought people a quick and easy way to make fires. Today matches are still being used, but people have more new ways to make fires. One of them is to use an electric fire starter. Of course an electric fire starter is much more expensive than a box of matches. But it is very useful.

Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all? To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the Earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That’s why dry deserts everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass. Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil found between the cracks of the stones to grow in. Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.  What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won’t. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.

Reading for pleasure is the easiest way to become a better reader in English. It is also the most important way.

Some students say they don’t want to read for pleasure. They say they want to use their time to learn the rules of the language and new words. They say that pleasure reading is too easy.

Many experts (专家) say pleasure reading is very important for learning English. Dr. Stephen Krashen, a famous expert on learning languages, says that pleasure reading helps you learn many important things about English. Students learn more grammar and more words when they read for pleasure. They also learn more about good writing.

Dr. Krashen tells us that pleasure reading helps each student in a different way. Each student needs to learn something different. Pleasure reading makes it possible for each student to learn what he or she needs.

Reading for pleasure is not the same as studying. When you read for pleasure, you choose your own books, and you don’t have to remember everything. There are no tests on your pleasure reading books. Pleasure reading will help you:

●learn how English speakers use English

●read faster in English

●find examples of good writing in English

●learn new words

●learn about the cultures (文化) of English speakers
