6、When you watch TV programmes about wild animals, it is amazing to see how an antelope can escape a lion’s attack. In the wilderness, everyone has a stunt(绝技). Even plants have their own ways of fighting off enemies.

Over millions of years of evolution, plants have developed a unique defence system. Chemicals are widely used for survival, By making their leaves, flowers, stems, roots and fruits distasteful or poisonous to predators(食肉动物), plants can fight back.

One such plant is the Gold Wattle tree. British botanist David Cameron has found that when an animal eats the tree’s leaves, the amount of poisonous tannin(丹宁酸) increases in the other leaves. “It’s like the damaged leaves telephoning the others telling them to fight together against the enemy,” he said.

The tree also sends defence messages to neighboring plants by giving out a special smell. Golden Wattle tress in the surrounding 45 meters will get the message and produce more tannin within 10 minutes. Now, if a predator eats too many of the trees’ leaves, it will die.

Every species of plant or tree specializes in the production of a particular set of chemicals. A herbivore(草食动物) that can safely eat the leaves of one tree may be poisoned by its neighbor.

In this way, plants have developed not only individual defence systems, but also shared it with others. This makes it impossible for a single predator to destroy even a small area of forest.

1.According to the passage, which of the following statements about the Golden Wattle tree is NOT correct?

A.It is only poisonous while it is being attacked.

B.It has the ability to warn its neighboring plants of danger.

5、EQ has something to do with your understanding of emotions. It refers to people’s awareness, management and expression of emotions. EQ plays an important role in success. If you are not satisfied with your EQ, you can use the following five ways to improve it.

Know your own emotions-Recognise and name the emotions you feel; understand why you feel them; distinguish between feelings and actions and tell yourself what you are feeling.

Motivate yourself-You need to consider how to control your feelings productively. Practise some emotional self-control and delay satisfaction. A study found that people who delayed satisfaction were more successful later in life-as measured by a lot of factors including happiness, income and job satisfaction-than those who did not do that. You need to find a balance of emotions and motivate yourself to do something about it.

Recognise emotions in others-The ability of listening to another person’s opinions is a skill that effective managers have. Emotionally intelligent persons are also sensitive to other people’s feelings and listen to others well.

Manage your emotions-Accept your feelings, but find a balance between oversensitivity and emotional suppression(抑制). When you are angry or unhappy, you need to find a way to get out of the mood. It is healthy to express your emotions, rather than keeping them hidden.

Handle relationships-Applying conflict management skills instead of ignoring conflicts and being considerate and cooperative are part of controlling relationships. Communication skills are essential to healthy relationships.

4、As we all know, the concept of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is “Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People’s Olympics.” This concept includes three themes. Among them “Green Olympics” embraces the essence of the 3,000-year long Chinese philosophy, namely harmony and unity of nature and human existence.

On the World Environment Day in 2003, BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games) began the Green Office Project. It covers such areas as saving energy and water, trash classification, and use of office equipment, paper recycling, paperless office work and the environmentally friendly behaviors of staff.

On September 24,2005, the logo of the Green Olympics was shown at the Beijing Youth Palace. The logo uses a form of the traditional handwriting. It consists of the crown of a tree and the shape of a human being that are used to create the form of a large tree reaching the sky. The image represents harmony and unity between human beings and nature. Just like swinging colored strips that surround and cross each other, the green lines form a crown of a tree and recall flowers in full bloom, expressing the sustainable(可持续的) development of environmental protection.

3、Ten students have stopped complaining about gas prices. Instead, they’re competing in a nationwide contest to redesign the cars. Final competitors were chosen from a field of 60 applicants.

“The schools were selected to find technology that will help our country reach the needs for energy sources, so we don’t have to depend on other countries to provide fuel.” Pickering said. He is vice chairman of the US House of Reprentatives Energy and Commerce Committee. The teams received $ 10,000 and a Chevrolet Equinox which would be used as a starting place for modifications. Each team can also get $ 25,000 in parts and software from GM and other sponsors. The cars will be taken to the GM proving grounds for a national competition. It’s the finale(结束曲) of a three-year competition.

In the first year, students designed and worked out their plans. “At the end of the first year, our plans for the hybrid(混合动力系统) were approved and we received our own Chevrolet Equinox to begin construction.” said Amanda McAlpin, leader of the outreach team.

In the second year, the students’ goal is for their hybrid to exceed the factory Equinox’s fuel efficiency by 50 percent. “Our goal is to place in the top five but increase in the areas we lacked in.” McAlpin said. “If we can maintain this strategy, we should be able to obtain our goal.”

In the final competition this year, GM technicians would examine the cars to approve the safety and make sure they meet all contest rules. “We would like to be in the top half of each event, but they are all different. Every team has their own strategy to win.” said a computer engineering major.

“By hosting the competition, GM really gets the cream of the crop(优秀毕业生) from the top engineering schools across the country.” McAlpin said, “Many of our recent graduates who have worked on the car have received jobs with GM.” And Pickering agreed, “Their brainpower will give us firepower and horsepower for the future.”

This summer, join the International Conservation Scouts on a fun - filled holiday with a difference. Year after year, young people from all around the world get together at one of our sixteen conservation (环境保护) camp. Their shared aim? To help protect the countryside and its wildlife.

Many animals and plants are in danger of disappearing forever. The dormouse, a kind of mouse, for example, needs woodland plants for food and trees to stay in. Its habitat (栖息地) is being destroyed by man and it needs our help to survive.

On a conservation camp holiday you will learn all about nature and how to protect it. Our trained leaders will accompany you and tell you everything you need to know. Because of this you don't need any experience, just energy and enthusiasm. You will explore the countryside and work to ensure the survival of hundreds of animals and plants and still have plenty of time to enjoy the camp’s excellent sports facilities and organized nature paths through beautiful scenery.

The International Conservation Scouts is a worldwide organization, so there must be a camp near you, You can spend a splendid holiday at any of the camps for as little as f 60 including accommodation and food.
