As hard as he tried, his first season was   3   and by midseason he expected to he released any day.

The coaches were puzzled by his   4   because he   5   all the characteristics of an excellent athlete, but he couldn’t seem to incorporate (并入) those   6   into a coordinated (协调) effort. He seemed to have become disconnected from his   7  .

His future seemed   8   one day when he had already struck out his first time at bat. Then he   9   up to the batter’s box again and quickly ran up two strikes. The catcher called a time – out and ran to the pitcher’s mound for a conference.   10   they were busy, the referee, standing behind the plate, spoke   11   to the boy.

Then play continued, the next pitch (投球) was thrown-and the young man   12  it out of

the park. That was the turning point. From then on, he played the game with a new   13   and power that   14   drew the attention of the parent team, and he was   15   to the majors.

On the day he was leaving for the city, one of his coaches asked him what had caused such a turnaround. The young man replied it was the encouraging   16   the referee had made that day when his baseball career had seemed doomed (注定失败).

“He told me I reminded him of all the times he had stood   17  my dad in the batter’s box,” the boy explained. “He said I was holding the bat just the way Dad had held it. And he told me, ‘'I can see his genes in you; you have .your father’s   18  .’ After that,   19   I swung the bat, I just   20   I was using Dad’s arms instead of my own.”

4、Leading investors have joined the growing chorus of concern about governments and companies rushing into producing biofuels as a solution for global warming, saying that many involved in the sector could be jeopardizing future profits if they do not consider the long – term impact of what they are doing carefully.

It is essential to build sustainability criteria into the supply chain of any green fuel project in order to ensure that there is no adverse effect on the surrounding environment and social structures. The report produced by the investors expresses concern that many companies may not be fully aware of the potential pitfalls in the biofuel sector.

Production of corn and soya beans has increased dramatically in the last years as an ecofriendly alternative to fossil fuels but environmental and human rights campaigners are worried that this will lead to destruction of rain forests. Food prices could also go up as there is increased competition for crops as both foodstuffs and sources of fuel. Last week, the UN warned that biofuels could have dangerous side effects and said that steps need to be taken to make sure that land converted to grow biofuels does not damage the environment or cause civil unrest. There is already great concern about palm oil, which is used in many foods in addition to being an important biofuel, as rain forests are being cleared in some countries and people driven from their homes to create palm oil plantations.

An analyst and author of the investors’ report says that biofuels are not a cure for climate change but they can play their part as long as governments and companies manage the social and environmental impacts thoroughly. There should also be greater measure taken to increase efficiency and to reduce demand.

3、History is full of cases where dreams have been a pathway to creativity and discovery. A striking example is provided by Dr. Otto Loewi, a pharmacologist and winner of a Nobel Prize. Loewi had spent years studying the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (脉搏). A tremendous breakthrough in his research came when he dreamed of an experiment three nights in a row. The first two nights he woke up and wrote down the experiment quickly and untidily on a pad. But the next morning, he couldn’t tell what the notes meant. On the third night, he got up after having the dream. This time, instead of making notes he went straight to his laboratory and performed the crucial experiment. Loewi later said that if the experiment had occurred to him while awake he would have rejected it.

Loewi’s experiment gives some insight into using dreams to produce creative solutions. Inhibitions (拘谨) are reduced during dreaming, which may be especially useful in solving problems that require a fresh point of view.

Being able to take advantage of dreams for problem solving is improved if you “set” yourself before retiring. Before you go to bed, try to think intently about a problem you wish to solve. Steep yourself in (潜心于) the problem by stating it clearly and reviewing all relevant information. Then use the suggestions listed in the previous section to catch your dreams. Although this method is not guaranteed to produce a novel solution or a new insight, it is certain to be an adventure. About half of a group of college students using the method for a week recalled a dream that helped them solve a personal problem.

1.The main idea of this passage is that          .

A.very little is really known about the meaning of dreams

B.it is possible to “catch” one’s dreams by planning before going to sleep

C.dreams can be useful in producing creative solutions to one’s problems

D.Loewi’s experiment helped in the study of transmission of nerve impulses

2.The first paragraph is mainly organized by           .

       A.classifying types of experiments

B.summarizing the work of one researcher

       C.comparing and exploring historical cases

D.telling in time order about one man’s research

3.If Loewi had thought of the experiment while awake, he would have          .

A.asked someone else to do it                   B.thought it was a bad idea

C.tried it out on his own                          D.thought it was a wise idea

4.The author probably thinks that          .

A.Loewi should not have conducted his experiment

B.dreaming is of very little value to most people

C.inhibitions may stop someone thinking of useful ideas

D.college students should not try out dream experiments

5.The author seems to be in favor of         according to the passage.

2、During the past few years, scientists the world over have suddenly found themselves productively engaged in task they once spent their lives avoiding – writing, and kind of writing, but particulary letter writing. Encouraged by electronic mail’s surprisingly high speed, convenience and economy, people who never before touched the stuff are regularly, skillfully, even cheerfully tapping out a great deal of correspondence.

Electronic networks, woven into the fabric of scientific communication these days, are the route to colleagues in distant countries, shared data, bulletin boards and electronic journals. Anyone with a personal computer, a modern and the software to link computers over telephone lines can sign on. An estimated five million scientists have done so with more joining every day, most of them communicating through a bundle of interconnected domestic and foreign routes known collectively as the Internet, or net.

E-mail is starting to edge out the fax, the telephone, overnight mail, and of course, land mail. It shrinks time and distance between scientific collaborators, in part because it is conveniently asynchronous (writers can type while their colleagues across time zones sleep; their message will be waiting). If it is not yet speeding discoveries, it is certainly accelerating communication.

Jeremy Bernstei, the physicist and science writer, once called E-mail the physicist’s umbilical cord (生命线). Lately other people, too, have been discovering its connective virtues. Physicists are using it; college students are using it, everybody is using it, and as a sign that it has come of age, the New Yorker has celebrated its liberating presence with a cartoon—an appreciative dog seated at a keyboard, saying happily,  “On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.”

1.The reasons given below about the popularity of E – mail can be found in the passage except           .

A.direct and convenient                           B.time – saving in delivery

       C.money – saving                                   D.available around the clock

2.How is the Internet or net explained in the passage?

A.Electronic routes used to fax or correspond overnight.

B.Electronic routes used to read home and international journals.

C.Electronic routes waiting for correspondence while one is sleeping.

D.Electronic routes connected among millions of users, home and abroad.

3.Which statement is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence in the third paragraph?

A.It shrinks time for communication and accelerates discoveries

B.Although it does not speed up correspondence, it helps make discoveries.

C.It quickens communication even if it does not accelerate discoveries.

D.The quick speed of correspondence may have ill – effects on discoveries.

4.What will happen to fax, land mail, overnight mail, etc. according to the writer?

       A.They will co-exist with E-mail for a long time.

B.Fewer and fewer people will use them.

C.Their functions cannot be replaced by E-mail.

D.They will play an additional function to E – mail.

5.The writer mainly tells that          in the last paragraph.

A.E – mail is nowadays becoming a trend

B.E – mail can sometimes be unreliable

       C.the presence of E – mail deserves a discussion

I have recently been diagnosed with an addiction-to coffee. And I am not alone. This is a problem among Americans of all ages. The coffee shop has become a social feature in our culture. Its appealing smell, cozy and inviting atmosphere are difficult to resist, especially if you struggle with an addiction like alcohol.

But, when you look past the leather couches and coffees named after European cities, all you'll find is coffee, milk, and a little sugar. Anyone can buy a Coffeemaker and a container of Coffee Mate and try to create the same drink as a coffee shop does. The only difference between your homemade coffee and coffee shops is that they put it in a cute cup and throw on some whipped (泡沫状的) cream to convince us that we are treating ourselves to a worthy relief from the fast pace of everyday life. And we believe them, silly for the idea that drinking their coffee improves our quality of life.

So, next time this "white chocolate" begins echoing in your mind, you'll have to make a decision: Will you continue to be one of the millions of brainwashed Americans who live for their next trip to a coffee shop, or will you just walk away and ignore it? My advice is -- dare to resist and just say no.
