8、Be Grateful to Life

Once President Roosevelt’s house was broken into and lots of things were stolen. Hearing this, one of Roosevelt’s friends   1  to him and advised him not to take it to his  2  so much. President Roosevelt wrote back immediately,  3  ,”Dear friend, thank you for your letter to   4   me. I’m all right now. I think I should thank God. This is because firstly, the thief only stole things from me but did not hurt me   5  ; secondly, the thief has   6  some of my things instead of all my things; thirdly, most   7  for me, it was the man   8  me who became a thief”

It was quite unlucky for anyone to be stolen from.  9 , President Roosevelt had such three reasons to be so.  10  .This story tells us how we can   11  to be grateful in our life.?? Being grateful is an important philosophy of life and a great wisdom. It is   12   for anyone to be lucky and successful all the time  13  he lives in the world. We should learn how to face   14  or misfortune bravely and generously and to try to   15   it. If so, should we complain about our life and become   16  and disappointed ever since then or should we be grateful for our life,  17   again ourselves after a fall? William Thackeray, a famous British writer, said, “Life is a   18  . When you smile in front of it , it will also smile and so will it   19   you cry to it.” If you are grateful to life, it will bring you shining sunlight. If you always complain about everything, you   20   own nothing in the end.

6、You’ve heard the saying:“Love is patient and kind .”If love is patient, it may be because love is truly understanding . What most women need during times of frustration is understanding.

Many conflicts are simply misunderstanding. As a new bride, Marge Piercy moved into the small home on her husband’s farm in the mountains .She put a shoe box on a shelf in her closet and asked her husband never to touch it. For 50 years he left the box alone , until his life partner was old and dying. One day when he was putting their affairs in order, he found the box again and thought it might hold something important. Opening it , he discovered two doilies and $82.500 in cash. He took the box to her and asked about the contents.

“My mother gave me that box the day we married,”she explained,“She told me to make a doily to help me feel better every time I got mad at you.”

Her husband was touched that in 50 years she’d only been upset enough to make two doilies.

“What’s the $82,500 for ?”he asked.

She explained ,“Oh, well that’s the money I’ve made selling the doilies.”

4、After too long on the Net, even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend's Liverpudlian accent suddenly becomes too difficult to understand after his clear words on screen; a secretary stone seems more rejecting than I'd imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid?hours become minutes, and alternately seconds stretch into days. Weekends, once a highlight of my week, and now just two ordinary days.

For the last three years, since I stopped working as a producer for Charlie Rose, I have done much of my work as a telecommuter. I submit(提交)articles and edit them via E-mail and communicate with colleagues on Internet mailing lists. My boyfriend lives in England, so much of our relationship is computer-mediated.

If I desired, I could stay inside for weeks without wanting anything. I can order food, and manage my money, love and work. In fact, at times I have spent as long as three weeks alone at home, going out only to get mail and buy newspapers and groceries. I watched most of the blizzard of 96 on TV.

But after a while, life itself begins to feel unreal. I start to feel as though I've merged(融合) with my machines, taking data in, spitting them back out, just another node(波节)on the Net. Others on line report the same symptoms. We start to strongly dislike the outside forms of socializing. It's like attending an A. A. meeting in a bar with everyone holding a half-sipped drink. We have become the Net opponents; worst nightmare.

What first seemed like a luxury, crawling from bed to computer, not worrying about hair, and clothes and face, has become avoidance(逃避), a lack of discipline. And once you start replacing real human contact with cyber-interaction, coming back out of the cave can be quite difficult.

At times, I turn on the television and just leave it to chatter in the background, something that I'd never done previously. The voices of the programs relax me, but then I'm jarred by the commercials. I find myself sucked in by soap operas, needing to keep up with the latest news and the weather. "Dateline," "Frontline," "Nightline," CNN, New York 1, every possible angle of every story over and over and over, even when they are of no possible use to me. Work moves from foreground to background.

1.Compared to the clear words of her boyfriend on screen, his accent becomes      .

  A.unreal         B.unbearable        C.misleading.           D.not understandable

2.The passage implies that the author and her boyfriend live in        .

A.the same city                        B.the same country.

C.different countries                 D.different cities in England

3.What does the last paragraph mean?

A.Having worked on the computer for too long, she became a bit strange

B.Sometime TV programs give her comfort and even makes her forget her work

C.She watches TV a lot in order to keep up with the latest news and the weather

D.She turns on TV now and then in order to get some valuable information

4.What is the author's attitude to the computer?

A.At first she likes it but later becomes tired of it

B.She likes it because it is very convenient

C.She dislikes it because TV is more attractive

D.She dislikes it because it provides an imaginary world

5.The underlined phrase“coming back out of the cave ”probably means      .

A.going back to the dreaming world

B.coming back home from the outside world

C.bringing back direct human contact

D.getting away from living a strange life

3、As a result of pollution, Lake Erie, on the borders of the USA and Canada, is now without any living things.

Pollution in water is not simply a matter of “poisons” killing large numbers of fish overnight. Very often the effects of pollution are not noticed for many months or years because the first organism(生物体 ) to be affected are either plants or plankton. But these organisms are the food of fish and birds and other creatures. When this food disappears, the fish and birds die too. In this way a whole food chain can be wiped out, and it is not until dead fish and water birds are seen at the river’s edge or on the sea shore that people realize what is happening.

Where do the substances which pollute the water come form? There are two main sources sewage (污水)and industrial waste. As more detergent (洗涤剂 )is used in the home, so more of it is finally put into our rivers, lakes and seas. Detergents harm water birds dissolving the natural substances which keep their feathers waterproof. Sewage itself, if not properly treated, makes the water dirty and prevents all forms of life in rivers and the sea from receiving the oxygen they need. Industrial waste is even more harmful since there are many highly poisonous things in it, such as copper and lead(铅 ).

So, if we want or stop this pollution, the answer is simple: sewage and industrial waste must be made clean before flowing into the water. It may already be too late to save some rivers and lakes, but others can still be saved if the correct action is taken at once.

1.Pollution in water is noticed _____.

A.when the first organisms are affected

B.when a good many fish and birds die

C.when poisonous things are poured into water

D.as soon as the balance of nature is destroyed

2.The living things die because there is no ____ in the lake or river.

A.water             B.fish               C.poison            D.oxygen

3.Which of the following is harmful according to the passage?

 A.Organisms

B.Plants and plankton in the water

C.Waste water from cleaning

D.Industrial waste made clear before flowing into the water

4.The way to stop water pollution is _______.

A.realize the serious situation clearly

B.put oxygen into the river

C.make the waste material harmless before flowing into the water

D.make special room in the sea for our rubbish
